Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo Developed by Capcom with a 1996 USA release (Super Puzzle Fighter 2 X in Japan)

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: spf2t

----------------------------------------------------

Difficulty Level:
Normal

----------------------------------------------------

I never really played this game in the arcades before but it always looked cool.  I figure this will be a good excuse to play it the next couple weeks.  I've been playing it for a couple days now and it's got me hooked.  I decided on Normal difficulty because I wanted it to be more enjoyable to everyone who will play it more casually.  Even still, I usually lose about 3 rounds in on average on Normal difficulty, my best run was reaching the last round.  I suggest you practice on Easy until you start to get the hang of it.  Here's a pretty good site to help with strategy:

http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Super_Puzzle_Fighter_II_Turbo

I'm new to this site so let me know if I did anything wrong in setting up this page or choosing the game.

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Monday August 8 (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

Best of luck!-

New (PM me if you want to suggest any revisions/additions/omissions):
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

This is easily one of my favorite puzzle games, but I am not that good at it. I might just have to toss my hat into the ring this time though.

Great choice!  This is a great game to get the girlfriends into when we have people over. Only problem is you might not ever get control of the game choice back!

Can't wait to start practicing and see how good some of you guys are.

Good luck everyone!

I am hopeless at this kind of thing, even with the stratwiki. Anyway here's something to get the ball rolling.

I made another decent run.  Not as good as one I did before the competition started but it'll help move this along.

How do you set difficulty to "normal"?

My options are:
easiest
very easy
easy
medium
medium hard (default)
hard
very hard
hardest

Thanks,
-Jason

EDIT: Oh, do you mean in the game selection screen, we need to choose "normal"?  The difficulties listed above are what's available in the operator settings menu.  Please clarify.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the operator settings menu.  It is the difficulty selection in-game.

Also, I'll go ahead and post an update score.

My highest score is a hair over 75k so not worth posting a picture.  I'll keep trying.  Got plenty of time.

When you get rid of gems, it sends time bombs to your opponent; when they get rid of gems, it "bombs you"   The count down gems dont count down time, they count down "moves". So after you place 5 pieces, they turn solid. The key to winning and big scores is setting up combos and or HUGE gems. when you put 4 pieces together like a square (2x2) or other rectangle sizes (2x3, 3x3,2x4,4x3,4x4,etc) they turn into a bigger gem. The diamond breaker gems that clear out a color are worth less then using a normal round breaker, I believe the value is 1 to 1, so if you have a 3x3 block of red, its worth 9 counter gems instead of 18

I've played this one off and on for years. Along with Magical Drop III it's probably my favorite puzzle game. Never really took note of how well I might be playing it though.

I haven't figured out a strategy to get the most points.
Do you build big gems or try to get multiple chain reactions?

This game I tried for the chain reactions.

The highest points are gained by doing a chain combo, and the last thing to be broken being the big gem.

I gotta get my cab in order, so I can get in on this, finally a game I'm GOOD at for this competition.I was stomping Japanese players on XBOX Live, one accused me of being Japanese and faking my region as USA, good times.

I love how almost every one of these threads has someone saying 'as soon as I get my cab back together i'll give this one a go'. Why do we tinker so much? I'm no better.

Good game choice though, as soon as I put the monitor back in my cab, I'm firing it up.

LOL.  I've only got a joystick in my cab so far.  But I'm still in the building stages.  Finally beat the Easy mode with a score of 80,000.  Now to get a little better at the Normal mode.  If I can break 100k I'll be happy.  Fun game though.

Curses. This is a fun game, I've never played it before. But The scores I'm seeing from you guys look like magnitudes more than I can get. When I get a chance I'll put a few good hours into it...

Don't worry, I started playing it for the first time last Thursday and I couldn't even beat Easy mode.  It was fun though so I logged hours into it and finally got a feel for the game.  I'm soooo close to beating Normal now.  I beat all 8 regular stages and found out there was a hidden Akuma stage that I lost to.  Keep at it a couple days and you'll be fine.

Malenko, I'm glad we have a resident expert here.  That's what I was hoping to find.  I see you said chaining gives the most points, does it also send the most counter gems?  Right now I'm not really focusing on setting up chains.  I mainly just set up one or two large power gems and crash them just before the opp can disrupt me with counter gems.  Then I go into "Oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---" mode when they usually send tons of counters and just try to survive that onslaught.  Is that how a typical game's supposed to go or do you not even let them pressure you with counters somehow?

Score update (barely claimed 1st place again): 255470

The hardest thing about this competition is getting a high score. Sounds odd huh? I steam rolled through the game, beating Akuma and barely cracked 230k. I played again, slow playing and hit 240k and didnt even make it to Akuma. Sadly the best way to play this game nets you the least amount of points.  Its a fun challenge though. I'll post up more tonight, at least this got me motivated to play the KI2MAME cab again before its gone on saturday.

ok, so I guess to follow tradition, heres some pointers:

1)you usually can get more points by beating the computers FAST instead of trying to milk points (for the early matches)

2) move fast, the tetris pros dont over think moves, you shouldnt either

3) plan your moves around the other guys counter pattern

4) Donovan is prolly the best non boss character to use

5) dont do a bunch of tiny moves, that just helps set you up for failure.

Before this competition, I just tried to slam the gems down as fast as I could and keep my board pretty clean to beat the opponents. Trying to maximize points by building big gems and chains messed me up because I was going too slow. So I went back to my old way of playing.

I beat Akuma!  So happy.

+1 to the "go fast and don't overthink things" comment.  When you play enough to have a good idea where you want to go with gems and not waste time thinking about it, you get more crash gems and rainbow gems in a shorter amount of time to really put the hurt on or get out of sticky situations.

I found another way to get points, it's the tech bonus. Try to get it by not using the diamond on any gems and just slamming it down on nothing. It gives 10,000 points.

Great insight!  I've been practicing that playstyle now and the points are stacking up.  I broke 300k without beating Akuma.  Now if I could just take him down I'd have a more respectable score.

Didn't quite get your score.  I barely missed one rainbow gem because I got counter gem blocked on one of the stages.  So close.

I can't play anymore tonight though. Barring a crazy run from someone else, congratulations quarterstringer!  Thanks for the competition!

Wow, you came very close. The competition was fun.
If anyone has any suggestions for the next game, please list them.

Yup, sold it to a buddy, so I can still go over and play it if I want. I still have my KI1 ans MKII cabs though. I needed the room for a pinball and its extra motivation to get started on my bartop.
