I was considering something a little obscure & wacky, but Gain Ground didn't go over too well, so I'll go mainstream on your guys this time.  My finger is still sore from Raiden, so let's play a game where the fire button isn't pounded incessantly:

Buster Bros.  (aka "Pang" or "Pomping World" elsewhere & in some of the sequels)

Good luck!

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: bbros

DEFAULT SETTINGS (Busters Bros. doesn't have DIP switches--it has a settings menu--make sure that your settings are: Player 03, Level Nomal [sic], Extend 20k 100k 200k 1000k

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Sunday January 23rd (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

Best of luck!

If you are a Twin Galaxies competitor, there is already a place for you, so let this be a friendly competition among us mortals.  Please make sure your sores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

Note that pang is considered the parent set, so you need that, too.

I haven't played this before, but have played Super Pang a bit. A decent score after a couple games.

I used the same approach that I used on Raiden.  Brute force, lots of swearing, occasionally pounding the control panel.  I'm starting to learn where the goodies are hidden,  how to get some more extra guys, & how to maximize the points earned from shooting bubbles.  Why is it that my right pinky hurts after playing an intense set of games?  I mean, I'm using my index finger, not my pinky!   :'(

Anyway, it's on!  It took a lot of effort to get this far--we'll see how long this score holds...

I hate you guys.  I played last night and the best I could produce was 180,000.  More attempts are futile as even a killer score for me won't be 1/2 of your scores.

Have any of you posted some of these scores to twin galaxies?  Not just for this game, but any of the high score competitions.

CrazyKongFan and I have submitted scores to Twin Galaxies. We have competed since almost the beginning (Aug 2008) of this BYOAC competition and the rules have evolved since then. But this new rule - "If you are a Twin Galaxies competitor, there is already a place for you, so let this be a friendly competition among us mortals." didn't show up until Competition #50 Donkey Kong in Aug 2010. Two years after we've started.

I don't remember any talk of banning Twin Galaxies competitiors. Whenever CrazyKongFan or I have had a competition where we had the TG record (Funny Mouse, Klax, Rampart etc.) we disqualified ourselves and just wanted to see how other people would score. We even gave lots of tips to help others learn and enjoy the game.

I think just because we have a record at some games doesn't make us good at all games. I've enjoyed competing in these competitions and learning new games. If I ever win another competition, I might take out that TG rule because it seems it was only one member's decision to change the rules and there wasn't any discussion about it. But then again, the way Jasonbar has been dominating lately , I don't know if I'll ever get a chance. :)

Nope, I have not.  I played the hell outta this game in college back in the day.  I used to be able to 1CC it most of the time....but that's been a long long time ago......as in around 1990-1992? Considering how I played last night I won't get close to doing that again for a long time.   :)  After reading your post I looked on TG.....um, crap, I never thought I'd be competition for those guys.

Only tips I can think of right at the moment is get the food as those add up quick later on (shooting the food before it hits the ground works too).  Break most of the breakable blocks looking for powerups and extra guys.  There are *invisible* breakable blocks as well that can hold nice stuff too but I can't remember where any of those are.   :(

What I've been learning so far (and general comments):

1 - Shoot all the big bubbles first, then all the medium bubbles, then all the small bubbles.  You get way more points that way.  Watch the points appear when you shoot a bubble--if you shoot a string of same-sized bubbles, their values increase.  Once I learned this, I tried to do this as much as possible.  What does it get you?  A field full of way too many little bubbles.  Hard.

2 - Shoot all of the breakable bricks--they're worth 500 each.  On some screens, where there are several, you get a free guy for shooting all of them before the round ends.

3 - I try to avoid the vulcan gun.

4 - I try to pick up every power up, even if I don't need it, because they're all worth points.  Dynamite & vulcan gun are sometimes exceptions to that rule.

5 - I've been starting on round 1.  I figure that's the way to go--I don't see any bonus for starting on a higher stage.

6 - Yah, the food is worth tons--when you get to southern Europe & such, it's around 50k per fruit!

7 - Collision detection really cheeses me off sometimes--there will be a bubble really close, I'll shoot, I'll die, & after my guy falls off the screen, I see that the bubble is slightly overlapping my harpoon.  Baloney! I think the game checks for bubble-man collison before bubble-weapon collision...

Game on!

Thanks to jason for all the tips in the last few games.  I'm playing this on a makeshift control panel and can't wait until I finish my cabinet and go back and play some of the older competition games too.

I'm going to bring up my question about the second button again.  The control panel shows two buttons per player, but I don't see any use of the second button.  Is this correct or am I missing something?

I wasn't sure if your question was pertaining to the TG rule in these competitions, so everything's good. It just gave me the opportunity to address that rule. CrazyKongFan did submit a 3rd place Klax score he got during that competition.

Nice, my lone victory in the high score comp, Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters would have easily taken first on twin galaxies (then again there are only 2 scores posted), but I didn't have mame setup to record the imp (which i do now)

I've noticed quite often with several large bubbles on the screen and dynamite is taken small bubbles end up overlapping each other to the point you can't tell it's more than one.  When I play, I always try to assume it's not always one small bubble...could be two.  Saved me on many occasions.

On level 15 (MY BAD!  it's level 16) I finally rediscovered an invisible block.  On the left side 2-3 spaces in there is a hidden clock.

:banghead: is a good representation of me playing last night.  So, I just continued to refresh memory on the later stages...man, I forgot how much some of those angered me.   :D

Edit = level fix.   ::)

OK, what the heck do you get for picking up an hourglass (besides some points)?

You think it would add more time, right?  NOPE!

You think it might pause your clock, right?  NOPE!

WHAT DOES IT DOOOOOO!??!??!!?!?

Hi guys,

This is my first entry in the high score competition.
Looks like there are some serious players here.
Looking forward to play along with you in the future.

score:89610 ... I never played that one before  :-\

Is the INP necessary?

For the most part, no an INP isn't necessary.  As long as you take a screenshot or picture it should be good.  It is a friendly competition, so we all have to take people's word for it for the most part.

But, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more INPs to be able to watch some of these high scores  ;D

Google...why didn't I think of that...???

Ya know, sometimes I do notice that the balls are slower--sometimes I thought it was just slowdown or a glitch, but that makes sense--I'll watch for it next time I play.

Thanks!

It's true!  It works!

But it's reeeeeally subtle.  You have to get several hourglasses to make a noticeable difference.  At least they're good for points, but I'm not going to do anything risky to nab houglasses from now on.

Hi Quarter stringer,
I was the one who added that line about TG, I meant it specifically for DK (and only DK) because of all the hubbub surrounding King of kong and all I didn't want outside people just trying to use this as a forum to compete, it was NEVER meant to keep forum members for participating, and I do really appreciate that if someone does hold a high score for that particular competition that they disqualify themselves, plus I love hearing all the tips from the pros >:D

So lets just take that line out
Sorry for any misunderstanding

Best,
Bender

I'll have a crak at this. I did play this a bit when I set up my cab, but I can't remember the score right now. I suspect nowhere near Spoots score though...

Well, I suck!! Not out of the 300k mark yet so I'm not submitting a score yet. Once I'm over half a million I'll chuck one in :)

Anyway, the point of my post is just to say what a great idea this is :)

I think a lot of us get carried away with the woodwork, selecting the authentic sticks/buttons/spinners, nice tidy wiring, setting up the frontend to your own exact specifications, hiding windows, making sure you have every obscure rom ever, etc, etc....

Even though I've limited my romset to games from my youth that mean something to me, and a few that I've discovered through playing around with MAME I still find that I'll stick something on to make sure it works, make sure the buttons are set how I want them etc but then I'll come out and start fiddling with some other aspect of emulation.

This light hearted competition gets you actually playing these games again propperly which I think sometimes gets lost amongst the rest of the hobby!

Nice one :)

Bender,

Thanks for clarifying everything, I know the rules just get copied and pasted for each competiition and it just got carried over. So now that I'm eligible now ;) let's get back to Buster Bros.

+1. I've been on here about 5 years and only just started participating in these 'friendlies' a few months ago. Like you say, sometimes it gets hard to see the games from the cab

With scores like those, I'm out. My highest ever was about 330k. And time around, about 240k. I eagerly await the next comp  :D

This run was a bit sloppy so I didn't think I'd pull this score out.

1,421,840  inp included.
