----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: nibbler

DEFAULT SETTINGS (Only ones that matter: 3 lives to start, Pause at Corners ON)

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Wednesday April 20 (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

-Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

Best of luck!

Can someone post a video of this game running on their cab?  I swear mine runs super fast - either that or I suck.

Not mine, but this is how it should look in MAME:

I've played a real one and the speed is the same, but the real PCB's I've played on, none had the background music.
Also, after the first couple boards, he speeds up, and eventually is VERY fast. This game is marathonable though, but not very many can do it. My friend I mentioned who has the record, did it in 1984, and played for almost 2 days!

Yes same here. I loved this game in the arcade, but MAME's version has the most annoying music that it makes playing intolerable.

Well, if you get good enough to get to level 14, the music stops, so there's some incentive for ya ;D

52,390.  That probably won't hold, so I won't upload a screen shot unless needed.

Ya know, even with the sound turned down, this game is still quite annoying.   :P

Yeah, this is probably one of those WICO 4-way necessaries. I don't mind the music, though it does sound a bit like farting.

I dunno...I played a dedicated Nibbler at SC3 recently & it too was annoying in all aspects...     :P

But if the ROM has hte music and the arcade had the same ROM, why would there be no sound at the arcade?  Is there an admin switch to turn it off?

I dunno, the speed seems right. You have to plan ahead and also use a proper 4-way joystick.

I'm not sure why the arcade doesn't. I believe someone over at KLOV said they once saw one that had music. I've heard that the games without music were missing that ROM, but I have no idea. Like I mentioned earlier, make it a goal to get to wave 14...no more music :)

FYI: I did my score using my laptop keyboard ;D

I cannot reliably control Nibbler on the levels where there are just dots for the pattern (like level 2).  Oh well.

I was playing this game, and I noticed how easily Mr. Nibbler would move off a straight path.  Then, I happened to have the controller in a diagonal up-left direction, and Mr. Nibbler alternated up and left.  Then I looked at Maws and saw that Nibbler uses an 8 way joystick...

Moral of the story: use a joystick with manual restrictors to limit this game to 4 way, or it will be hard to control Mr. Nibbler.  :-P

I think a dedicated 4-way is critical for this game. Even then, some of the 'mazes' are hardly worthy of the name, and seem to require very fast movements.

Curios to know. What was your friend's arcade record on, Nibbler?

I know a guy who went for the world record but fell short due to extreme fatigue.

Tricks to remember.

- You can only stop on flats (ie no corners/turns). Using flats comes in very handy later when the nibbler speed starts to get crazy.
- Whenever going into a roundabout, always hold your joystick so nibbler escapes and stops on a flat.

I used to love this game but playing it with my U360 (even though I love them) doesn't do a dedicated 4-way justice.
I believe I got about 500K the last time I tried. I used to play the machine for hours on a quarter, but that was a life time ago.

Playing Nibbler at the local arcade is how I met my wife, who BTW was a pretty kick @ss player herself. She admits to having hated me cause I used to hog the machine, but I share and thats's how we became friends. She now uses the joystick excuse also because she's so rusty.

I'll give it a whirl for old time sakes.

1 billion! :o He was actually the first person to score a billion on a video game (BITD) He's tried again a few times recently (he has his own machine now) but has come up a little short due to various issues (blisters, fatigue, etc)

Cool story about meeting your wife...see guys, Nibbler isn't too bad of a game ;D

I'm glad it's over. I really like this game but I had stop playing, because I was afraid I'm going to destroy my own equipment in anger. I was steaming because I'd swear I was trying to go left or right etc and it always managed to go into wrong direction. Perfect controls is a MUST with this game.

Yeah, I had a score of around 52,000 even playing on my cab, so I figured I'd go ahead and try to beat Jason's score on my laptop.  Only problem was that I was doing it in bed next to my wife, and finally at 11:00 she told me I was driving her crazy with the clicking noises...

I figured a happy wife > Winning the high score competition.   :P Maybe next time... now that I have my cab working, I actually have a shot at these things!!!!   :D

I'll plan on posting a game later today--I've got a list of candidates & will pick one.

1 Billion. Holy smokes. My wife would kill me if I spent 3 days trying to break a record. I prefer knowing I could do it only if push came to shove. And no one is shoving.  ;)

I missed out then. I got roughly 350,000 on Tuesday. I did save a screenshot but didn't get a chance to post it.

And yes, the U360 cannot handle it well at all when the game speed gets going. It reacts nothing like the original nibbler 4 way. 2 thumbs up and a toe for U360 on Robotron, but a thumb down for Nibbler. I was starting to remember my old patterns but couldn't execute them worth crap. Throw might have been a factor also, but it seems it was more reaction time on the U360s part.

I tried my outer joystick which is angles inward. It's one of those 8 way to 4 way easy switch joysticks from Ultimarc. I thought that would help. My god, the advocates of pointing their joysticks straightforward were absolutely right. It was 10 times worse that the U360s because of the angle. I didn't even clear 2 waves. I never really noticed how bad it was until now since I never play on the outside. Now I know what my kids were referring to when we play gauntlet. What I once believed would be intuitive turns out to really suck.  ;D.

Next project they face straight ahead.
