The pick for the next competition is Mario Bros. My eight year old son wants to compete in this competition so he decided on Mario Bros. I've been playing doubles Mario with him since he was three. In the beginning, I would kill everything and let him pick up the coins. Now he's a pretty good player and is very close to beating my high scores. So the challenge is - can you beat an 8 year old?

Mario Bros.

Good luck!

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: mario

DEFAULT SETTINGS

For this competition you should only get one extra man at 20,000. If you're getting an extra man at every 20k, try using the roms marioe or marioo.

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Wednesday Feb 23rd (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2011.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

-Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

Best of luck!

"can you beat an 8 year old?"

Probably not. Always loved to play this game but have never been any good at it.

This is the first great cooperative game ever IMO.  Me and my brother used to routinely 'KO' the game (get past level 25).  I may have to try my hand at single player for this comp, although I'm used to coop.

ahofle,

We might have to get a little side competition of doubles started. I don't think my son and I have reached level 25. He's happy when we reach that coin level where everything goes dark.

I've searched but I can't find any tips online for Mario Bros. So here's mine, to maximize points try to kick off the turtles/crabs/fireflies all at once. You get 800 for the first 1600 for the second etc. and the most you can get is 3200 for the fourth.

You can hide out from the creatures on the two outer sides (sets of 4 blocks) and on top of the Pow, only the fireballs can get you. Another safe place is on the bottom standing in front of the pipes.

At the beginning of each phase, get to the middle level as fast as you can to kill the creatures on the top level. You can kill the icicles before they completely form. Don't forget to use the Pow. It resets after every coin phase. Remember where the gaps are on the coin phase, if you get to the third coin phase it turns everything dark and the platforms disappear. Don't forget to collect the coins before kicking off the last creature.

Nay. Joust....though I bet some might say Armor Attack or Rip Off.

Here's a starter, and just below my best. I'm sure it will get knocked down before too long, though.

Apparently they fixed the Nintendo run sounds. DK is fixed. Anybody think the run sound still sounds weird in Mario Bros?

I didn't snag a screenshot last night but my score of 39k looks like its not gonna cut it. I think the farthest I made it was to the intro of the fireflies haha

After playing last night, I think this is actually the first time I've played the arcade version of mario bros. I find the biggest frustration comes from controlling Mario. You slide quite a bit when you stop/change direction and I'm used to the console Marios where you can control yourself in midair and make corrections to your trajectory and its a tough habit to break :)

Also its ingrained in my brain that its safe to jump on top of turtles. not helpful here...

game on guys!

Got a score of 250k
Level 34
(I will post a pic when I get home)

Here are some tips

1. Learn how to small jump. You should be able to jump from the ground level directly on top of the POW. You do a small jump by timing your jump. Push the joystick in 1 direction and while it is returning to center and your character is slowing down press jump - you will get a jump that is just as high but doesn't go as far.

2. POW - when standing on the middle POW, you are safe from everything but the orange fireball. You can jump over the blue fireballs, none of the creatures can get to you and the ice cannot hit you.

3. Pipes - you are also safe(ish) on the bottom level on the edge of the screen with the pipes. The creatures can't get you but you need to watch the blue fireballs and red fireball.

4. On a dual crab start first level, start off on the POW to knock them both out.

5. Do not kill the orange fireball unless it is the end of the level. The fast moving fireball is difficult to time.

6. Do not linger on a board too long. After a while the orange fireball goes away and is replaced with the fast orange fireball.

7. In the later waves, the longer you are on a level the more likely a blue fireball will appear. I will hang out on a level below the level I need to be on until the last second to try and get the blue fireball to appear on the lower level.

For fun and a few extra points, try to get all but 1 of the turtles knocked over on wave 2 on the middle platform. You can always retreat to the POW for a quick breather.

I second the idea of being use to Console Marios where you can control in the air too.  I kept trying to do a quick turn jump but always ended up jumping straight up or the wrong direction.  Probably didn't help I was using a keyboard and only had time to play for 5-10 minutes.  I'll have to give it another chance when I have more time.

Leapinlew-thanks for the tips and I'm hoping to have a project announcement up soon with a bartop that was inspired (to be honest, probably stolen :)) from your widowmaker cabinet.

Just kidding but I'm pretty sure "one credit only" rule was not about continues but having something to do with old games being affected and not working correctly (some/sometimes) , then again I'm often wrong.

Doh! I can play again and post another score. My high score is around around 350, but not on this machine. If I could learn a good grove at the higher levels, I would be in good shape. Once you pass a certain level, the game is at max difficulty. At max difficulty, the game has 2 orange fireballs.

Is that some strange kind of MAME cab?

I couldn't really take on that strategy above, but tried again and got forty points below my high score.

Haven't been on in awhile, but noticed the current competition, one of my favorites :) My brother and I used to play doubles on this game alot back in the 80's (and on my Atari 2600). Are you guys getting an extra man every 20K? Just wanted to make sure I'm playing at the right settings. First entry for me is 183,910.

1 extra man is what I'm doing, but if we are supposed to get a free man every 20k, let me know! I didn't know that was a setting even.

Which version of MAME are you using? I'm using the current one (141). The default settings say 3 men to start, extra man at 20K only and difficulty easy, but it gives me an extra man at every 20K (something I'm not used to) This is with the ROMset stated in the rules, Revision F.

After 3 games, I got 90,880.  I'm not feelin' it.  That's the best that I'll have time for this go-around.

Great game--still can't get used to having less directional control over Mario.  All those Super Mario Bros X games have tainted me!

I'd need to check, but it's definitely not current. By default, I get 3 men and 1 man at the first 20k. I should change the settings to give me more men so I can get practice at the higher levels.

I did some googling and there seems to be a bug in the mario rom for mame versions 133 and up that gives you an extra man at every 20k. This bug also ends the game between 980k and 1 million.

For this competition you should only get one extra man at 20,000. If you're getting an extra man at every 20k, try using the roms marioe or marioo.

It was introduced in 133 because that's when revision F was added (and the original parent "mario" was renamed "marioe", now called revision E)...if we're using revision F (as stated in the OP for this round), then you need to use 133 or later, cause that's the only versions that have it....and that's the one that has an extra life every 20K...that's why I was asking ;D Anyway, I see you've the original post now. If you're using 133 or newer, you need the alternate one listed, but revision F shouldn't be stated at all (except to say not to use it :P)

Now my question is - you only got 183k with 3 men to start plus 9 extra men? ;D

Yeah, unfortunately...Actually, I was rolling along pretty good, and hit a brick wall on one level and lost most of them. I can usually make it up to the KO levels (25?) on normal settings (3 to start +1 extra)
