Game Competition #17: Bank Panic
« on: April 22, 2009, 01:19:47 am »
For the next 2 weeks I picked Bank Panic. As I mentioned in another thread it's underappreciated game so give it a try. It should be pretty easy to get into. you need either 5 push buttons setup or 2 way Joy + 3 Push buttons. (left, right, shoot: left-center-right) You will mostly die due to your reflexes getting faster than your brain is able to process, meaning you will kill innocent people, because your finger twitched, before you were able to distinguish between customer & robber.

Good Luck!

Rules:

- You can only use bankp.zip (there is no other choices anyway),  no cheats.  - Single Credit only. Start from 1st level (no skipping to higher levels, which would be be to your disadvantage anyway)

- Use any MAME version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Monday, May 5th (11:59:59pm Eastern Standard Time).

 -High score wins

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- rules might be adjusted slightly as seem to be fit

Prize...hm, give me few days, as arcade related prizes are not as easy to come by, as its pretty niche market.

Hey, I think we usually get 2 weeks for the competition.  You've set this up for 1 week.  I'll be out of town for 4 days this week, so I personally vote for the deadline to be 5/4/09, but if I'm wrong about the 2 week thing & I'm in the minority, then keep the deadline as-is.

Thanks,
-J

I think you are best left to a friendly competition sans money. Send a gag gift if you want, but even that isn't necessary.

I didn't even notice the length of time. Like Jason said, two weeks.

Better to do no prize at all than to do cash. (Don't get me started on the donation statement...)

Corrected. I didn't know it's 2 weeks intervals. Somehow I was under impression it's weekly.

Ginsu Victim. When I typed I'll "donate"I didn't mean nothing by it,  it wasn't meant to be disparaging, as "here have few bucks and leave me alone..." simply my english is not greatest and I couldn't find a better word at the moment, and still can't (it's on tip of my tongue and yet still can't think of that correct word)

oh, that's what you refering to. It was meant to get a pool of money going, which could get the competition more fierce. It was just an idea I threw out there, nothing to get upset about.
I'm gonna drop it now. It's getting distracting to this topic.

I didn't. I just thought it was in poor taste compared to the rest of the competition up until this point.

I was about to post my awesome score of 46,900.

I've found this is a game that you can really get better at with some practice.
Here are some tricks for more points:

When a bad guy shows up, try to wait until the 'counter' starts.  If you can time it so you shoot him when it's at 0:00 you get a ton of points (5000 for the guys in red!).  Even if you don't get close to 0:00 you still get a lot more points than if you blast him immediately.  At the end of the round, the average 'fair' counter also gives you bonus points.  Each time you get a red shirted guy in 0:00, you get a letter to spell out 'extra'.  I don't think I've ever gotten five letters (I had 4 on the score above) so I'm not even sure what happens.  Probably just gives you an extra man?

Don't recall this game. This is after after a few tries. It's interesting the attract mode is the playing through of a whole game. Does it at least twice, too, before showing the score table.

Quote
A red-shirted robber who is shot at the precise moment of drawing his weapon will earn maximum points and a letter in the word "EXTRA" (indicated in the lower left corner). Completing five such kills finishes the word, earning the player an extra life, bonus points, and instant advancement to the next level. Extra lives can also be earned by reaching certain scores.

I have actually gotten this before, maybe twice. You do indeed get an extra man. I didn't realise that it was a '00' that earned a letter though.

I used to play a sitdown version of this game with a mate at the Australian National University Union bar, and despite the fact that it was a cocktail cabinet we drank large glasses of beer ('Schooners', 385ml, usually Carlton Draught) while playing the game 2-player. It was a good way to measure when one was drunk enough.

BTW ahofle, nice score. My high score table on my main machine reads 247k, so I'll see what I can do ;D

Cool, I finally got the extra thing (and had a great game as well).  It gives you a free man and 20,000 points.  485,600!

I only got up to 326k this evening, ahofle is settling the pace.

Here are a couple more tips:

- Women only wear blue dresses when they are being followed by a bad guy.

- Good guys always let the door close and open again, unless there is a bad guy behind them.

Good luck :)

This can get kinda fun. I've played several times now, and didn't lose a dude till almost fifty grand, but then got duped once, and shot twice by the two-shot bandits. They draw faster, too.

- Women only wear blue dresses when they are being followed by a bad guy.

I found an exception to this rule last night. A blue woman was at the door when another bad guy shot me. At that very moment, the blue woman dumped a bag of cash on the counter. I was gobsmacked to see that bag of cash in her hand, but I guess it had something to do with the fact that I was dead already :)

What I don't buy is the "unfair" bit. I mean, they walk into a bank carrying a gun with intent to kill you.  Sod em, shoot 'em all! In the later stages it is too frantic to worry about anything else.

Interestingly, if you get "00" for the first bad guy and "unfair" for all the rest, you'll still maximise your "FAIR" bonus points at the end as it only counts your "fair" kills, not the "unfair" ones.

If you win the comp then you get to decide what comes next.

I've seen the blue woman give me money again - but this is really rare, it would be, like, only 1 in 100 times that this would happen ....

I've got my work cut out for me on this one.  Hit the EXTRA on my last game.  That was a thrill!  Couldn't quite catch ahofle, but this was just 6 games of play, so I can still improve!  I found myself subconsciously seeing patterns--hard to explain them, but you pick up little cues that give a hint as to what's going to happen.  The most frustrating part is losing a guy b/c a bomb goes off or time runs out while you're trapped at 3 doors where the darn people just won't stop coming in!!!

Still can't figure out the signficance of the numbers on some people's backs when they leave the bank...seems inconsistent...

Yeah supposedly but not always.  Sometimes a normal person or two appears before the robber, so it's really useless.

Yeah, the bad guy is not necessarily the next in line on the indicated door, but if you don't attend that door quickly, money will be stolen there.

What I don't get is something that happens on a late stage, sometimes one of the girls shows some leg in some kind of can-can move. Generally at that stage things are too frantic to pay a lot of attention. I don't know if it's just supposed to be funny or if it's some kind of "bonus" (like the tied up guy who gives you three sacks of money if you set him free... and incidentally usually appears when there is a bomb ticking)

Anyway, great game. I used to play it on my MSX a long time ago and it was a great surprise to rediscover it when I started using MAME.

I don't know how you guys get so high...I can't even get the 70K free man score! I also had one of jasonbar's frustrations...a bomb ticking on door 10 and couldn't get over there because people kept coming in to deposit their money.

When people are coming to the doors nonstop, hold the joystick to one side or the other--as soon as there's a break in the customers, you'll start moving, & hold the stick till you arrive at your door of choice--people can't stop you from scrolling.  You *shouldn't* have this problem till the higher levels, generally...just concentrate on getting all your deposits at each window--that's your primary goal.

Looks as if you & ahofle & I will be running neck & neck over the finish line!   :o

As for your blue dress lady comment, I've seen *lots* of blue-dressed ladies give me money with no drama.  Strange that it's really rare for you...   ???

There's something about the ladies' heads that gives away whether or not there's a villain behind them.  Sometimes, I think, they're looking to the side when they open the door.  Sometimes they look to the side a couple times quickly.  Something about that pattern gives it away, though I'm too busy multitasking & "in the zone" to try to be able to figure it out.

And I think the guy in brown & blue (no mustache) never has a villain behind him.  Must be a tough guy...

Well I'm out of this competition, for various reasons, including the score. My highest so far been 172250.
I'll contact winner through private mail about the prize. Good luck.
