Well, I managed to hold on to the high score in Bomb Jack, so it's my turn to pick the game.   ;D

The next game is going to be Smash T.V.  I loved this game as a kid, though I didn't get to play it enough to get any good.  I imagine competition should be pretty strong on this one, so I am looking forward to honing my very rusty skills!

I've chosen the TG single player marathon rules:

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------
ROMSet: SmashTV
1-8: Off
2-8: Off
Unknown: Off [All]
Service Mode: Off

Internal Defaults
-----------------

Difficulty: 3 [Easy]
Lives Per Play: 3
Violence level: Normal

Sound must be turned OFF for proper INP playback

Special Rules: The above are the default internal settings for this title and need not be changed. This is a Single Player, Single Credit ONLY variation. Continues are NOT allowed!

Special Note: It is possible to earn extra lives throughout the course of the game. Additionally, “point-scrabbing” also known as “hunting” is allowed in this title, with the sole exception of unlimited hunting techniques in certain buffalo and robot boards within Act II, as per the Twin Galaxies Board of Referees.

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Saturday March 20th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2010.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

Good luck!

could you explain this a little more? is this where you just sort of "camp" in the corner and wait for the automatically generated "idle player" killers to appear and just keep shooting them?

I copied that straight from the Twin Galaxies' rules.  Like I said, I never really got a chance to play this enough to get good when I was a kid, so I don't really know any tips or tricks.  Hopefully there are some more experienced Smash T.V. players on here that can enlighten us...   :dunno

Buffalo don't appear on the first level. I think you have to be a couple of rooms in on the second level to see them. I've only gotten ~450K so far - almost got to the money room. I assume I will get over 500K once I get that cash bonus. Back in the day, I used to be able to get to level 2 on a quarter, so more to come...
BTW: What kind of a$$hole hides a land mine under a perfectly good VCR.

wow this game is hard. I'm up to about 600k or so but I don't think I'll ever be able to take on mutoid man with 1 credit. I threw about 6-10 continues at him to see what he's like and he just refuses to die! And every time I knocked off part of his armor, the explosion killed me! Any experts know his secrets?

The trick to Mutoid man is patience. Don't go for the power ups that appear at the bottom of the screen. Make good use of the power ups you do get. i.e. don't miss. And don't stay in the same top corner the whole time.

After a couple of 4 million games I finally broke through with 5,709,680. Disregard that 20 million score, that's my son's game with probably 50 credits. On mutoid man, after you kill the two guys sitting in the front he becomes easy because you can just sit in the top corners and he can't kill you. So just be patient and wait for the extra firepower to come close to you to pick up.

Had a good run!   ;D

Did I mention that I used to play Smash TV all the way through pretty much every day after lunch in the dining hall in college?   ;D

-Jason

PS--I'm submitting the 6,492,310 score.  The top score must've been a previous multi-credit effort.

I must not have been as good at Smash TV as I miss-remembered.

The sound is real choppy-- at least the announcer's voice anyway.  I'm running Mame 1.22 with a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz and 1mb of RAM.  Is this due to my old computer or is the sound bad due to the emulation?  Just curious.

No, it's emulated fine on mine.  I have version .119 and the sound is fine.  Perhaps you have triplebuffer enabled?

Here's my first game... I'm just getting warmed up.

Mutoid man in my opinion is easy.  Those laser guys on level 2 always give me trouble.

Thanks--I was playing pretty much non-stop right up till the end of the competition.  My arms are sore!

I couldn't break my big score, but I could pretty consistently get scores in the 6 millions.  I almost made it to Scarface once or twice (just a couple of rooms away).

I was beginning to see patterns in the "weapons" that appeared--often, you get 3 free guys in a row--when you do, you're in good shape.

But I couldn't make much sense of the prize bonuses given after beating Mutoid Man.  I got pretty good at dragging out room 1 & picking up lots more prizes & cash, then picking off tanks when they came to hurry me along.  I managed to get 160k on my best effort on room 1.  I figured that this would also up my bonuses, but sometimes I got huge bonuses, & sometimes I got piddly ones...differing by a million points from game to game...I'm stumped on how that all works...

Anyway, thanks.  I'll have a post up pretty soon.  I keep an ongoing short list of candidates, so I don't need to do any hunting to find the next game.

Thanks,
-Jason

Regrettably, I wasn't able to spend as much time as I had wanted on this.  It's what a house, a 1 1/2 year old, a wife and work will do to ya.  (Did I mention she wants to paint the bedroom this weekend?).  LOL.  Such is life though.  I just take it in stride.

I may submit a score later on just for kicks even though the comp is over.

Nice job jasonbar.
