YES, Karnov is a game that i have logged hours and hours on...  shooting fire out of your armpit at a dragon while standing on a Magic Ladder.

playing for a few minutes reveals that i am really rusty at this, i remember this game being hard but this is ridiculous.

Made my first few plays last night and I realized how much I suck at this game. After about 10 - 15 games, the best I could do was around 40K. Obviously, a good bit of practice is needed here before I can post anything even respectable. I'm with you Eagles, I just don't remember this game as being all that hard. Perhaps my old age is creepin' up on me? ???

OK, after playing for a little bit, I do hereby retract my enthusiasm for Karnov.

The game's not *hard*.

The game is CHEAP!   :(

Man, your guy moves sooo slowly & jumps sooo slowly & some bad guys on the screen shoot so fast or move so fast that you haven't a chance.  You can take a jump, then an enemy appears & his shots put you in a certain death situation before you've even landed.

It's a game of memorization--memorize where the cheap shots are.

Argh.

But, I bet it keeps me coming back, because it is a challenge & it is very creative.

Woot! I've been waiting for the next comp since I fixed my cab (",)

I suck at Karnov, having never played it back in the day, but i'll start working on it...

Edit: we'll I'll be! I just fired it up, and I still have my high score from last time I gave it a go. What's the protocol for these comps? Should I delete the old high score file and start again?

I use DAG normally, excuse the others. There's just something about 3 letter high score saves that brings that out in me  ;D

You have to set it between the comp start/finish . . . although as your friend BUM has a better score than I have achieved so far, you should be ok  :lol

No need ot reset your high scores if you wish to save them.  Just keep track of your best game that you play in this time period & submit that score.  Make sure to enter your score in the text of your post for clarity & easy perusal by readers.

Thanks,

I had some time last night--got to the 3rd level once: 126,840.

The 2nd level has 2 paths you can follow: 1 across the top, using the ladder, & 1 across the bottom.  The top path certainly seems harder, but it seems to set you up for getting goodies towards the end if you fly w/ your wings.  These power-ups are just confusing & awkward...

I beat the 2nd boss by just staying left & shooting a lot at the lions--they came out 1 at a time.  On my 1st try on the 2nd level boss, I landed right on top of them when my wings gave out--yet another cheap way to die...

Oh, and I thought I'd get a free guy at 50k, as in 50,000 points, but you get a guy after picking up 50 of those blocks that say "K" on them.  Oy, I can't see that happening...

I'm glad to see that people are finding this game just as cheap and scum-like as I always have. But for some ungodly reason, I keep coming back and I think that at least 1 or 2 of you will end up doing the same.

Keep em coming.

I find your vehemency towards Karnov interesting! It seems to me like many platformers- you learn when to move, when to shoot etc and once you're good (not that I ever get that good!) you can do it blindfolded! Anyway, this is one of those games I tried a bit and then forgot about, and I'm so glad it's the 52nd competition subject as it has compelled me to learn more about it.
Funnily enough, I've started my scores from scratch and I've only once gotten into the 70's range. plenty of 60's. I have been practicing on my GP2X too while waiting for my burger and chips at the corner store. for a short time, THAT had my highest score at 69,700! Less carpal happening with the handheld methinks  :D

I thought I was the only one who actually liked this game despite it's difficulty.

If I remember correctly from my NES version of this back in the day if you pressed down+b on controller two it would end the life of whoever was playing with controller one.

hopefully I'll have my complete rom set this week.

When I was little, I didn't count my pocket money in dollars.  I counted it in how many Karnov credits it would buy.

757,230

At some point I bought the cab, although it was the Japanese version.  The US version is slightly different - more hidden bonuses and you keep your firepower after using a special weapon, but monsters appear if you dally.  This is the first time I've had a serious shot at the US version.  Finished it first go, which makes me wonder if MAME is emulating the Japanese version correctly.  I've never beaten the final boss with the Japanese romset, but I was able to with the Japanese cab.

INP recorded with MAME v129.

 :o Well............ that was unexpected.
I'll have to check out that INP to try to grab a few tips and tricks. Well done.

I'm making up for the last 10 games which I sucked at.  >:D

It's definitely one of those games where you can get a bit further each time just by knowing what's there.  The first time I played I didn't even get up to the first grey boulder thrower, so I gave up.  Then my brother had a go, and he was a bit more persistant.  Eventually we figured out how to recall the ladder, how special items worked, and that the ladder length depends on how high the screen is.  We always took on the first boss (the water spirit) with big fireballs, but we soon learnt that you could just spam triple fire and it would be dead before it could land its first jump.  Nearly all the enemies in the game can be killed quickly just by shooting fast (centipede woman and t-rex are probably the two exceptions).  Mummies can't be killed, but you can play through without ever facing them.

The bat trap in the middle of stage 2 had me stuck for a while, followed by the blue birds, then the volcanos at the start of stage 4.  There was a younger kid at the arcade who was good at it, and we learnt off each other.  He was the first I saw who made it to stage 5.  Stage 6 is pretty hard going, and the middle of stage 7 had me stuck for quite a while.  Stage 8 is piss easy, and stage 9 is mostly about getting to the final boss before the clock runs down.

There are a few cool things you can try with experimenting, like where the falling bonuses are.  There seems to be a lot more in the US romset, particulary speed boots.  If you activate speed boots while you're jumping, you do a kind of super jump.  Another interesting trick is climbing the towers at the start of stage 2.  As long as you kill the heads, you can safely use the body segments as stepping stones to reach the top path without losing your ladder.  The rest of my techniques are in the INP file, although I took a few risks like not using the boomerang on t-rex.

I didn't see my score at the end.  The end of level 2 is pretty disturbing.  But can we use version 1.0?

Break 100 and post it anyway. These are friendly comps and it's always good to see someone posting progressively higher scores.

The dragon tricked sure bumped it up! But I haven't gotten much further in the game, still not into the third level. Will be going away this weekend, but I'll be sure to give it a good hammering as soon as I can. Has been fun, and I'll be sure to watch out for more competitions. Good way to get better at games, or even discover ones I haven't played yet (",)

Anything in particular you're stuck on?  I always take the underground way on stage 2.  If you shoot the eyes of the statues, they cry enough K's to give you a bonus life.  Helps to stand on a ladder for that.

As soon as the bats come on, move to the far left of the screen.  Turn around and shoot like crazy.

That I figured out on my own (",)

A lot of the fun of a game is discovering this stuff on your own. But I have taken on board the ladder 'spamming' and the eye shooting. This evening I managed to pass the second level, but didn't better my last score of 131 K. I'm now house sitting a friends place for a week, so that's it for me...

Time's up!

Thanks for playing and I hope you enjoyed it.
DrFrag takes out the win with a convincing score of 757,230.  :notworthy:
darcyp bags the silver with 290,140
and danny_galaga didn't give up till he busted 100k for a respectable 131,410  :applaud:

Well played to all and see you in the new thread that DrFrag will be starting shortly.....

Never argue with an idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
