--------------------------------------------
Game Name: Star Trek
  ROM Name: startrek

Settings: Default

Controls:
    Joystick: rotary
Buttons: 4 (fire, thrust, photon torpedo, warp)

From Wikipedia:
The game makes use of painstakingly synthesized speech, since memory costs at the time made the use of sampled audio almost prohibitive.

Unlike most arcade games of the time, the player is presented with multiple views of the playfield. Throughout the game, survival depends on the player's ability to accumulate shields. These are rewarded by docking with starbases, which sometimes must be saved from destruction at the hands of the Klingons.

The control system for Star Trek employed the use of a weighted spinner for ship heading control, while a series of buttons allowed the player to activate the impulse engines, warp engines, phasers, and photon torpedoes. The warp button was deliberately placed farther away from the rest of the buttons, in order to force the player to reach for them in heated battle. The booth version of the game had convenient location of the warp button at the right hand thumb.

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

- Quest for the Bronze Joystick! The most successful competitor of each calendar year will possess & display the BYOAC Bronze Joystick Trophy. See this thread for details:The BYOAC Bronze Joystick.
Happy Gaming!

Congo Bongo and Speed Coin were considered also  :D

I remember playing the sit-down version of this.  Pretty cool to have the spinner on your left side arm rest and the buttons on the right.

Just like every other kid in the 80s, I played this thing at the Santa Monica pier arcade.  Couldn't believe when that exact unit hit Ebay a few years back.

Not exactly a favorite.   Probably played it a handful of times on mame.   Just playing on a joystick.   I just keep moving and firing.   Very first score...

I love the sit down version of this game. A local collector has one that I get to play from time to time.

I think a spinner is needed to be effective/enjoyed.  157,700

Well, I knew the PC in my cab wasn't long for this world and it finally crapped out on me while trying to build a spinner out of an old mouse.

Had a really great game, and finally got to see the white ships, which basically move very fast and ram you.  Some tips, if at all welcomed (it seems as if I'm playing this competition by myself?)

* Use a spinner, or mouse.  Joystick simply won't do.
* Starbases are worth more at the end of the round if you don't visit them for refueling
* Use the warp often in brief spurts to get a better position, esp. when firing a photon torpedo
* Always destroy the purple saucer for big points.  Let it chase you then stop moving, turn, and fire
* Starbases give you a shield, a torpedo, and a little warp back.  Use some of each before visiting.
* Try to take out more than one enemy with torpedoes, which have a blast radius

I don't really use the bottom 1st person view at all.   It's cool and all, but most of the game is played looking at the overhead map.

Had an aneurysm when entering my name  ::)   276,800

Controls pretty much knocked me out.  Toss in a steering wheel or light guns and I'll check back in 2015.

Good luck popsicle, beat popsicle.  May the best popsicle win!

What's with the laziness with DIP switch settings, people? "Default" occasionally changes from MAME rev to MAME rev, & somebody might have tweaked a game's DIP settings long ago, forgotten, & think that they're still "Default."  :soapbox:

Attached are my settings. Are these default?

Also attached is my first game score: 133,025. Not bad, but not popsicle quality either. I don't even look at the bottom part of the screen. Keen game. Loved the captain's chair cabinet!

Thanks,
-Jason

I mapped some buttons and was able to make a game of this.  Pretty sure I'm missing at least one control though.

Few more tries myself and upped my score to 217975.

I need to learn to better use the warp with torpedoes.

My default settings also say 'easy' difficulty, photons=4, and 30,000 bonus.

Finally beat my top score, after sneaking in a few games every day.  Stood standing at my cocktail cab for this one, and got in the zone.

Bronze joystick goes to Popsicle or Kixfan. Drama!!!

As of the end of Star Trek, point totals are thus. Only 1 more game this year. Drama!!!

Popsicle: 19
Kixfan: 18

Well, I won't suggest any specific games but something from the 80's that uses a joystick and no more that 2 buttons (since space zap was mentioned, I will say that you can actually play that with a joystick if you want).

Wondering if i should take suggestions from popsicle and kixfan at my paypal account...

Seriously, this is the part I dislike about this competition.  Give me some time to figure something out.

Space Zap would be a good choice.  There was a lot of buzz about it earlier, and much disappointment when it didn't get picked.  Mostly from PBJim, so no one really gives a flying rectum, but still  ;)   It also works well with 4-way and 1 button.

Space Zap is better with all buttons like it's supposed to be, much more fun and difficult.  Not that my vote counts much, don't even have mine together yet.

my bartop CP made at least partially with Space Zap in mind, although I'm not done wiring yet.. must hurry if this is chosen.

My Projects:
MisSpent Youth a Vigolix bartop,  Little Bastard a rotating tablet/display bartop,
Pin-Dog a mini pin-cab on vpforums.org  Star Wars a wedgehead pincab on vpinball.com

Surprisingly there's still a few classics that have never been picked including Space Invaders, R-Type, 1943, and Zaxxon. Good to end the year with classic.

Last competition of 2014 has been posted..and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been previously selected.

LINK: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,142728.0.html

I went with Frenzy, the sequel to Berzerk.

When trying to look back at the Berzerk competition (confusing thread, btw) Popsicle and Kixfan appeared to be somewhat equal, so it should be a decent competition.  Plus, I'm pretty decent at Berzerk, but never really gave Frenzy too much attention.  This will force me a bit to kick its tires, plus give me a chance to possibly play spoiler to the competition.   >:D

Bring your 'A' game boys...and enjoy.
