Game Name: Armor Attack
  ROM Name: armora
      Settings: Default (5 lives)

Controls: 4 buttons (left, right, forward, fire)

The game offers a bird's eye view of a war-torn city, the jeep you are driving, and the tanks and helicopters you are trying to destroy. It uses a black and white vector monitor and a color overlay.  Use left/right buttons (or map to left/right joy), forward, and fire.  Default seems to be 5 lives.

Last day: Sunday, Sept. 14 2014 midnight Pacific
--------------------------------------------

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

- Quest for the Bronze Joystick! The most successful competitor of each calendar year will possess & display the BYOAC Bronze Joystick Trophy. See this thread for details:The BYOAC Bronze Joystick.
Happy Gaming!

Not that I'm against this but isn't it Big10p's pick?

No forward?   >:D

That should make things interesting.    :lol

IIRC, winning twice in a row passes the choice to 2nd place.   :dunno

Hmm. I don't see it in the official rules, but what it's always been is that the winner picks but if he wins twice in a row, second place picks -- the same person never picks twice in a row. Since that's what we always do it probably should be in the official rules.

Ahh, ok.  I do recall picking as a second placer a while back now that you mention it.

big10p, it's your pick!  I'll remove this thread when I see your new competition is up.

Ha, looking back it looks like I violated this rule when picking Mystic Marathon - if only you guys would have caught it then (oh, the hostility attached to THAT pick)   >:D    Never mind, someone else picked Berzerk  :dizzy:

If this is going to be S.O.P. (standard operating procedure), it should be added to the rules in OP.

"When one person wins two competitions in a row, game choice for the next competition passes to second-place."

Found a reference to it in Comp #6
LOL. Absurdly. I'll take that as a compliment. Your right. If I do win, I'll choose something I suck at for the next game. That way I'll be forced to excel at some new games. Sorry everybody.

Note I said there are terms limits. This means that after the second consecutive win the following comp game pick defaults to the second highest scorer of the current round. It hasn't been publicized since the first or second round but it's still in effect.

I remember only seeing this once in the wild as a kid at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.  Two players together is a lot of fun.  I love the colored overlay look and the flyer artwork.  That cocktail cabinet is pretty cool too.  Have to try to get aae working again to play this one with glow-ey vector effects.

Woohoo Cedar Point! Sounds like there's a lot of former Clevelanders on here.

It would be good to know if this is the game we're playing or not, though.

Me too!   Geauga Lake was awesome!    I remember they had an arcade back around the log jam and double loop.   Don't remember much about what was there.   Don't know if you are still around this area but it's a shame how they just let it go.   I'm in Columbiana County.    Kennywood is about 90 minutes from us and was just there a week ago.   They have a nice arcade.   Quite a few classics.   The movie Adventureland was filmed there.

I didn't realize the pick fell to me, either. I'm fine with sticking with this game, though, as long as popsicle doesn't mind keeping the score table up to date? :)

Louis it looks from your screenshot that you got the overlay on but are either missing or turned off the artwork in video settings.  Is this because it slows down your machine?

Not sure but the game plays fine with the art but all my screens come out the same all black if using the F12 key in Mameui64  -- Can get it with the Overlay artwork if I use Fraps. (as shown below)

Just went into the settings in Mameui64 and found if I change the setting for screenshots to Auto instead of Pixel aspect (that is what it was set on) it then adds the overlay artwork when using F12.

Boy this is a tough game, especially with those *%&$ing helicopters and tanks that can apparently still shoot at you after being shot?!

Also, if you're playing this on MAME, you may want to check what speed it's running at (hit F11). I played a couple of games before realizing my setup had it running at 158%

Good tip, hopefully mine is running fast too. Maybe running at normal speed will help my score.  :lol

Those tanks need to be shot twice. Once to take out their mobility and once more to take out their gun. ---daisies---!

Well you scored pretty good already --- Maybe it's running at 50%  :laugh2:  BTW you're widescreen pic with the artwork looks good and I agree having the artwork cropped on the sides during gameplay makes looking at the screen much better than looking at all that black without it !

I'll add that shooting tanks twice earns you 50 points instead of the 20 you get for disabling it's movement with the first shot.  I can't tell how the helicopter bonus works, but I'm guessing it's cumulative, i.e. the first one is +10, the second is +20, etc. until your jeep is lost.

I played this with my brother as kids.  It gets tough, but you really get your quarters worth.

It's a great 2 player game if you've got someine to play with.  One can bait the tanks/turrets while the other sneaks up.  Then you hope the helicopter targets the other guy!  haha

Oh, and if this game is new to you and you dig it (Tully), you may also enjoy Rip Off if you aren't familiar with that.  Same type of controls and again, more fun with 2 players.

Here's my best after several attempts...4580.

Think that's how it works and then it goes to 30 and 40 and then a free jeep if you can hit 5 on the one jeep and goes back to 10 again etc. (played around on one game to see how many helicopters I could get before losing a jeep and made it to the free jeep and then back to 30 by avoiding shooting the first tank - but they start to move and shoot faster making the rest of the game tougher after you hit the first tank.

I think the +10 thru +40 is what then applies to each tank you hit at that point.  After +40, the next copter you down earns you an Extra Jeep,

Pretty sure it doesn't reset when you lose your jeep.  So essentially, I believe you earn an Extra Jeep for every 5th helicopter you hit.

If I'm wrong, someone should correct me.

Also, is the score visible for anyone during play?  For me it is not, but is briefly when I lose a jeep.

Sounds correct but will have to check if it resets after losing a jeep -- and No the score only shows briefly here also which makes it hard to know were exactly you are during play.

Excellent game. Super duper. Used to play it at the Red Baron arcade at Southwyck Mall in Toledo. Good times.

3,520. A tie! Drama!
