Competition #127 : Eggs

High Score Competition #127 : Eggs
http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7693

ROM name: eggs
default dip switch settings
lives: 3
bonus life: 30,000
difficulty: easy

Last day: Thursday, November 7, 2013, midnight Pacific Time.

DESCRIPTION

The player must move around the playfield and clear it of baby chicks while avoiding enemies.  The baby chicks are freed by cracking open their eggs and then kicking them off the screen.

GAME PLAY

Eggs take 3 hits each to fully hatch, with hits being achieved by kicking the eggs off the walls or other eggs.  The eggs transfer motion to one another like billiard balls, so hits can be achieved on an entire row or column of eggs with a single kick.

The player can shoot his eyes at the Pesky Bugs to temporarily stun them, but the venerable Chomper is immune to this attack.  Both the Pesky Bugs and the Chomper can be killed by kicking an egg at them.

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Sorry for the obscure pick guys, but I’m always a fan of hidden gems in MAME, and IMO this game is a hidden gem if I’ve ever seen one.

There is such little info about this game available on the net that it’s almost as if it didn’t exist.  I had to write my own description of the game because the one at KLOV is completely wrong.

Be sure to check out the history.dat file (www.arcade-history.com) for some good starter tips.  Game on!

I was hoping folks would have this attitude.

For those who have never tried this game, be warned: unless you’re some kind of arcade Jedi, it’s probably going to take you several tries to even clear the first screen, but I’d encourage you not to give up too quickly.

If I recall correctly, the default high score is 30,000, which I’m guessing some might find challenging to beat.

Gave it a couple of quick tries and it is deceivingly difficult (Wish that chomper had to follow the same path as the player rather than warping through the obstacles  :badmood: )

I'll go ahead and get it started so at least I can say I was leading at some point  :laugh2:

I have played this a few times.   Good pick!   I usually do pretty good with Universal games.

Quick question though:

So how many games are there that are egg based?

Joust
Chicken Shift
Eggs
Burger Time (technically that egg is already broken so I'm not sure we should count it)

Eggventure comes to mind immediately.

Also, there is a game called Scrambled Egg which is also by Technos and almost identical to the game in this competition.  I think Scrambled Egg was the Japanese version and Eggs the US version.  Or something.

It gets a bit easier after a few tries ( Anyone else notice that you slow down after awhile if you don't clear any eggs for a bit ?? ) -- Got a bit better score but still not gonna be good enouigh to stay on top very long !

68,140 on level 4

I actually asked the same question above -- I think it is if you do not clear any eggs for a certain amount of time it slows down until you clear one or more -- I've had it happen when running around a bit and once I clear an egg or 2 he returns to the regular speed - so think it is programmed that way.

Geh.  Sorry about that JD.  My feeble brain and I passed right over it.  It was kind of a pain in the butt not being able to have control over your guy.  I feel like Tuna is like a little brother in this game.  You always find him around every corner when you are trying to do something saying "Whadda ya doin?  Whadda ya doin?"  ;D

Watch out for this crowd, Cynicaster. Sure, they'll say that they want to play new & obscure games, but when you bust out with some hot Lost Tomb or spicy Cyber-Lip action, they'll turn on you like a pack of hyenas...or cannibals...or hyena cannibals...sure, you're invited to the BBQ, but then you realize that you're not in a hot tub--you're in the cauldron...assuming that it's a combination BBQ/stew party.

In any case, I have played me a bit of Eggs b/c it didn't work on 115u2. It was one of a handful of "broken" games in that release, so I'm running that game & a few others on a different rev.

Tough little game--I always want to kick/push/action/whatever a lot sooner than the game lets me. Just realized yesterday that it seems to have some Pengo blood in it. Pengo has eggs in it too...coincidence...??!?!

You can make fun of my 23,130 score...but at least I have a ceiling sprinkler in my garage!

I got around 26K.  Had to make a controls.ini entry to be 4 way, as I was realizing playing this game with the servos on eightway is impossible.

Not a bad little game, but I agree with the above, the chomper going thru the walls is weak and the inability to kick more than once at a time is absolute garbage.  I end up having to wait to kick again somewhere, only to have to run away from the chomper morphing thru the walls at me.  Seems you take more time getting the chomper far enough back to do anything, since it isn't as responsive.

jdbailey1206 -- from your screen it looks like you are playing scambled egg not Eggs -- both games are from the same maker but are different games !! Should have noticed when you said " I feel like Tuna" -- since Tuna is in scrambled egg -- in Eggs it is Chomper !!!

Yeah, the restriction on how rapidly you can perform consecutive kicks is frustrating at times, especially since the game still invokes your character’s kick animation but doesn’t actually register a kick on an egg if you do it too quickly after the previous one.

A tip that comes to mind, in case it’s not obvious:  There are always some eggs on the playfield that sit in wall openings, making them only accessible from either left/right or top/bottom, but not both.  If you leave those ones for last, you’ll have a really hard time getting in to directly kick them with the chomper in hot pursuit and the pesky bugs constantly trying to undo your work.  So, I’ve found it’s best to put priority on clearing those eggs out as quickly as possible at the start of the stage, because not only do the other eggs and chickies on the screen provide additional cover from enemies, but you usually have the ability to attack the tricky eggs indirectly via the “domino effect” using other available eggs.

Since I selected this game I hope I can find a freakin’ half hour before the deadline to put up a score…

39,130. I just get impatient & sit at an egg, pounding on the button, waiting for action, & then I get eaten.

Or, I get painted into a corner by the munchy guy & an insect. Dumb.

Learned how to use the rooster effectively--he's awesome.

Yeah the rooster is effective but he costs you 10,000 points per level if you use him (ie. there is a 10,000 point bonus fro clearing the red egg last on any level) - so you have to decide whether his help is worth 10,000 points and remember not to clear him off the screen once you are using him !

WOW!   I've been playing this thing like crazy and never saw that.    Here is a little tip that I noticed.   When you are kicking the birds, kick them in the shortest direction off the screen.     I've had a few games into the mid 50s.

To get this I had to get the 10k bonus on the first 3 rounds.   Lost 1 guy on level 3, 1 on level 4 and 2 on 5.   Level 5 gets pretty tough.   The time it takes for your guy to start slowing down seems much faster.   Will be interesting to see if anyone can get past level 5.

  • No. It's your top score on Pole Position.

There seems to be no bonus for all healthy birds.

I dont think you get any points for blue or 'sick' birds.

Nice score -- Haven't been able to get past level 4 yet but there's still time  -- the 10K bonuses really help and yeah I noticed the amount of time before the slow down does seem to shorten as you get further and the creatures seem to recover the eggs faster as well making it take many more hits to clear an egg  - sucks that they go from almost hatched directly back to fully new with one touch so then you have to hit it across the screen 3 more times just because chomper chased you away one hit too early :hissy:

Since there is only a couple days left, thought I'd put in my insurance score.   Finally got the bonus on first 4 screens.   Level 5 is impossible.   Someone will have to prove to me there is a level 6 cause I don't see anyway to get past 5.   I think I only ever got maybe 2 eggs on that screen.   Twin Galaxies has a high score of 59k but on the hard setting.

If you want to feel totally worthless, try the hard setting.   I have yet to clear the first screen.

I've been on the road and have been trying to play this game with a keyboard on my laptop, but haven't been able to pass 40k.  FINALLY will have some time this evening to squeeze in a real score.

Dang, I missed your post!   I thought I had it.   Started to create the new competition and saw your post.   Then I realized you picked this one so I guess it's still my pick, I'm just 2nd AGAIN.   Haven't won since #117.   New comp in a few minutes...
