Romset: Blood Bros. (set 1)

Difficulty : Normal

Lives: 3

Bonus Life : 300k 500k+

One Credit, No Continues.

Last day is Saturday February 23rd (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2013.

General Rules:

- Highest score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Good luck!

Lives - 3?
Bonus life 300k 500k?

As I know resident "purists" they will complain about previous competitions not linked (just do quote of the 1st post in the previous competition and copy/paste)

And they will complain about lack of screen shots, marquee, etc. I personally don't care but some here are very metrosexual about it.

71270 first try. Seems easy for now

Is this one of those games like Cabal that has a joystick version & a trackball version?

Wikipedia & KLOV seem to say that it's joystick-only. Just wanted to confirm.

As much as this game looks like fun, it seems to be majorly flawed! Of what I'm reading there is cheats basicaly built in. On 1-2 for example if you start shooting at the tree lines you will start getting 20K bonuses repeatedly, there was some other (basically) cheats listed in history.dat for mame32, but don't remember of top of my head.

EDIT: Found the following:

* Here's A Way To Play Blood Bros. For As Long As You Want :
 1) Get to the second screen (preferably without dying on the first screen).
 2) Shoot the building on the right side of the screen and start shooting the trees in the background on the right. 20,000 points fly out from each bunch of trees. Continue.
 3) That is basically it. A few problems occur and here is how to counter them :
3a) 5 men run across the back from the left and throw grenades : Just shoot the grenades before they get to you. Eventually they come out less often, and will stop altogether.
3b) The men on the right come out from the edge to shoot you : Same as above. They stop eventually.
3c) A plane flies over and drops bombs : Same as above. It stops after some time.
3d) After a certain amount of time a bird comes out to kill you : Let it. Only 2 birds ever come out (sometimes only 1) and then they also stop coming. This is why it pays not to die on the first screen.
 4) Hold your finger on the button to keep shooting the trees (sticky-tape works well here) and prepare to get 'really' bored. Play the neighboring game so that you can keep an eye on it.

* Extra Live : On the 1-1 and 4-1 stages, the tin can be shot eight times to give you a free man. If you miss it, don't bother trying again - you only get one chance.

Yeah, it's nice to have the previous comps linked, as well as images. Do as instructed above.

127,500 on first hasty game. All I did was play "kick the can" & ignored everything else on 1-1. Shot the trees for a couple of 20k bonuses on 1-2.

Same here, but with way lower score! I think I'll give this a good workout though, as I have played Cabal a bit...

I checked it out. Cabal is better. The targeter and such behave like in Cabal, where there's a trackball, but in in this at least in MAME, there's no analog controls.

A token entry. I even had a 1up waiting at my feet.

Be sure to shoot horses after they throw their riders and use dynamite on Zeppelins for quick points.

Yup, that cheat works great. I got bored at 1.1M & started playing honestly...after a while into the cheat, I didn't even have to move. I could have put a paperweight on the fire button, gone to get lunch, & come back with a super duper awesome score...

This may come down to a competition of who can stay awake the longest...

That's why I was trying to point out that this games is tainted, but no one seemed to mind, so whatever. My first score is the only score that is not "dirty" I'm waiting until next competition, y'all can duke it out among your("dirty")selves  ;) See you in the next compo.

Can we vote to move on to the next contest, or have op choose a different game that is not so easily exploited?

I've got some good ideas....

mimc, since your score is "pure" you decide between these styles....

A Head-On type game or a Horitzontal Shooter

Both of these have been pretty underepresented in previous contests.

Since you asking my opinion, then horizontal shooter (we talking R-type type of shooter here, right?) I don't think there was a single shoot 'em up of this type yet.

Or whatever else you want, I'll be fine with any choice, but thx for asking, nice gesture!

Yes of the R-type variety but I'm going a little bit off the deep end. There are so many awesome horizontal shooters from Blazing Star to Xexex and from Cotton to Thundercross

But we're going with Rabbit Punch. Lends itself nicely to a scoring comp with the falling carrots and such.  Will have thread started (including asterisk) by tomorrow AM.
