Competition #131 : Hammerin' Harry

Here we go, another non-shmup/shooter game...this time in platforming hammer-smashing fashion!

ROM name: hharryu (USA-- Parent ROM: hharry)

Default DIP switch settings:
  • Lives: 2
  • Difficulty: Normal
Original manual

Last day: Sunday, January 5, 2014, midnight Pacific Time.

Quote from: Hammerin' Harry
I'm gonna storm the Rusty Nailers' headquarters to get back the people's properties.
I'm gonna smash the villains with this hammer.

The Rusty Nailers, money-worshipping land developers, bought up by tricks all the buildings and lands in the town in a scheme of raising estate prices there for resale, and they finally broke Harry's house to scare him off. That exhausted his stock of patience.

DESCRIPTION
You control a worker with a big hammer who smashes his way through obstacles and a variety of enemies.

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Happy Gaming!

Cute game. Cute animation. Lots of variety. Fun to smash stuff with a big hammer.

- I'm using 115u2, & I see no 1P, score, high score, or timer. Does anybody else have this issue? I have a few other MAME revs installed on my machine & can try another one--oh, how I miss MAWS... I need to get a high score to see my score on the entry table & then again on the top 10. I've never played a game "blind" before to know what gives me points or how much time I have left. Weird.
- High scores don't save (on 115u2).
- My game had 3 guys for default--where was the source for choosing 2 lives? Another case of different revs having different default DIP settings?

Best is 35,000 so far--getting a little farther every time.

Using 0.149 here and it shows the score fine during game but does have 3 lives by default guess I'll have to disqualify my 36,900 score as I forgot to change to 2 lives. (to change go into the tab screen and select Dip switch settings and change it there - I also turn off continues to keep from "accidentally" hitting the continue button  :laugh2:

Default on 133 is 3 Harries. I adjusted to 2 before attaining that awesome score. :)

Man, this game is tough. I haven't been able to get a score decent enough to post yet.

Are people not feeling this one?

We could switch it up if people would like.

I'll throw at score in once I get everything adjusted from the holidays.  My wife and I were fortunate enough to lose our power two days before Christmas and we spent all Christmas day in the ER.  She caught a nasty stomach bug and was severely dehydrated.  I'll have my score in by this weekend.

Opt - I don't remember the other two I chose for the competition but that is still damn funny that you chose Hammerin' Harry.

Sorry, can't find my thumb drive, post picture soon.  49,600.   Yes, 2 guys.    I have been stuck at 49k all day.   Dam Hook!

Some thoughts on this game:

1. Anyone else think "Needless markup maul" was suppose to be expensive mall?
2. What exactly is on his head, it looks like a bow you put on a baby.
3. So the mall is made up of pasta, noodles, manhole covers and electrically charge workers?   What no Sbarros?
4. At the end of the round they say "winning" - reminds me of Charlie Sheen

Actually his initials are on the 50K score the 55K is one of the default scores !

Played a few games and getting back to around 40K with 2 guys now but need a bit more practice (keep getting hit by the same swinging ball every time !!)

41,800 is best so far but should improve before the deadline !

2 things I realized that help me get past the cars.

1. get the big hammer (in the first section of upper warehouse), makes destroying cars easier
2. If you get the super jumpy legs (first section of lower warehouse) then you will need to adjust how you jump on cars.  This took me quite awhile to figure out.

Totally hit a ceiling. Can ace level one at about 33k and level two at about 53k without breaking a sweat.

On level three, I kill every guy at the beginning because that's the only points that I will get all level.

I fly through the hooks and parked cars, usually losing one Harry. The few times that I get to the tire guy, he kills me before I can do anything, or the slime from the last car shoots me in the back like an unsportsmanlike coward.

Pretty much every game ended at 55.?k.

Ugh.

Can't seem to attach picture with my tablet.

High scores 6-10 are
57.3, 56.8, 56.7, 56.0, & 55.8.

Standard deviation so very tight.

Totally hit a ceiling. Can ace level one at about 33k and level two at about 53k without breaking a sweat.

That matches with what I've been getting.

As soon as you jump across (while fending off the last hook) jump and aim at head and then it pushes you back to where you jumped and repeat (takes 8 hits).

I was stuck on this section for so long it's not funny!

@lettuce - Nice score!  I assume you completed level 4?   level 5?

@jasonbar - I see what you mean about the last gunman shooting you in the back on stage 3.  Funny?   I played that a bunch but never had that happen till tonight.   I usually try to kill him on the driver side.   I think you have to wait for him to get out.

I'm done.   I gave it a run and could not get any closer.
