Halley's Comet

Description:

Each planet is visited individually. You start above the planet you are rescuing and the first two levels consist of the approach towards the comet split in the middle by a mini boss enemy. Once you have reached the comet you must split the comet open and proceed inside the comet where an alien race have hollowed out the comet and are currently residing inside. Proceed through the waves of enemies will result in meeting the end of level big boss. On defeating this you can proceed to the next planet which essentially is more of the same with some new enemy ships dropped in.

Power ups

To assist you in your fight, many power ups are available. These are obtained by shooting smaller rocks which float past you. Power ups are triple front cannon, mini ships, wide spread cannon, increased speed, increased maneuverability, forward shield, and at the end of each sequence of power ups a wild card special in the form of a smart bomb, a complete power up of cannons or a full complement of mini ships.
The power ups are also multi-staged in that the first triple front cannon you pick up will give you standard size triple shots. Picking up additional triple cannons will increase the shot size.
Picking up mini-ships increases the player's firepower such that when they are picked up they fall in on the player's left and right wings and fire single shots as the player fires. By pressing the Hyperspace button, a mini-ship can be used as a screen clearing smartbomb.

General Rules:
- One Credit, No Continues.
- Highest score wins.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.
- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.
- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!
- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.
- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).
- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Slight Step up. 484530

I find with all vertical shooter games as soon as I lose my first life and all power ups it's pretty hard to recover...

Good luck!

160,610 after about a dozen attempts.   As far as sounds go, this is much more relaxing than Qix!

I got this many: 723,980. What can I get with that many?

Probably my final entry for this one, even though it's a great game...though, like most shmups, if you die well into the game & your power-ups are loaded, then you restart with a dinky little ship, there's no way to survive very long at all...

Reminds me of Xevious...but more colorful. And what's with those impatient power-ups that sit for only a couple of seconds & then scooch off-screen? Shy???

Stupid green mother ship with it's bright green background and ships with green lasers, that totally blend with each other!! That's just stupid! I ran into them without seeing them on few occasions.

I swear I wasn't sandbagging or holding this till the last second. Honest!

I was on vacation. Got back late last night. Had enough time to kill for only 1 game tonight.

I swear!

Hate you, hate you, hate you, hate you, hate you, hate you!

Victory was all MINE!!
Kixfan did that to you in scramble not me! You targeting the wrong person! I've been playing nice!

Seriously though, I believe this is probably at least 3rd time you edged me out like that at the last minute, but this one is by far the ugliest. Now it's personal (I think)

Eh, I had game in mind and all.
Congrats. See you in the next competition! Hopefully it won't be another whatchamacallit pyramid disaster!

Dude, believe it or not (probably not), when I glanced at your post, I read 1.8M, not 1.4M for your score. I was going to post & say "Thanks for posting such a high score--that deters me from staying up just a little too late tonight to play just 1 more game." But then I figured I'd like to shoot for 2nd. My good scores on this game came only from playing the 1st game of a session & while sitting on a stool instead of standing. Weird, I know.

So, I promised that I'd play just 1 game. I died 20 seconds in, aborted that game, then played just 1 more. It was the first time I saved Venus, then I saved Mercury (no difficulty increase perceived), then I choked right before the Sun's comet & lost all my remaining ships there.

Part of me was slightly relieved that I didn't pull a sleazy swoop by beating you.

I posted, stating that I'd like to claim the silver medal. Then, I looked at the thread & saw that I'd misread your post, so I edited mine.

Sorry. Really.

SHMUPs are my passion. I'll pick a non-SHMUP. Hopefully, it goes over well! :]

Dude, believe it or not (probably not),

C'mon Jason, why wouldn't I believe it? I'm hoping that I layed my "hates" thick enough to not be taken seriously.

Was I a little disappointed, sure. I went to sleep around 1:10am and checked on my tablet if anyone chimed in. At least I had good night sleep, not knowing what happened at 1:23am!  ;)

That's EXACTLY how my best score happened! For some reason it was much easier playing sitting having monitor slightly above than standing in this game! And only my greed cost me the game. I was on a roll, and then didn't want to let some ship slip by, raced to the right and instead of shooting it I managed to Kamikaze it, and of course afterwards whole game fell apart!

Anyway there is always #123!

2 more "hates" would have cleared that right up! :]

On my previous best game, I got the super "G" power up twice. Those extra side ships seem pretty useless as far as firepower goes, but they do OK as shields from side attacks. I found that you can protect them & keep them longer by staying at the bottom of the screen, scooching them off the bottom of the screen where they can't get hit.

My super winning score was on a game with no "G" power ups. I just managed to beat the stupid green on green on green boss & then things didn't get harder for quite a while.

I've historically stunk at the jumpy games, so I'm expecting to get pwned on Cyber-Lip! :]

Thanks,
-Jason
