I'm at work and I had a small browser window open on the corner of my screen to sneak in  a few rounds of helicopter, but people keep walking up behind me and I panic and crash :hissy:
Right, I suppose I should get back to work.  Excellent cab idea btw.

There's a way to take that SWF file and export it as a standalone EXE file.  It depends on the version of Flash it is running on, but if you get the Flash Standalone Player from the Adobe site, and you play the SWF using that, there is a selection in the menu to "Export Standalone Player".

Fun game!  If you enjoy this, you will probably also like Jetpack Joyride, which is available on mobile devices.  It's basically this game on steroids...

This is a good idea.

I made the swf into an .exe file for you.

Create a shortcut for it and go to properties, select run maximized. Now just set the shortcut it as a shell for windows.

File was too big to attach, here is a link for it.

Playing around with the SWF file now, I think I have found a way to save the high score

Once I get that done I will attempt to add a high score list.

Until then I took the copyright thing out.

Wow, I spent way too much time figuring that out.

Here is the Helicopter game that now saves your highest score on that computer.

Attached is the SWF and here is the link for the EXE

I am fairly certain I can create a high score board for it as well, but I do not have the energy right now.

Cheers!

I am currently working on a flash skee ball game and also want a high score list. I'm working in AS 2.0 so its older code. It seems like a shared object is the way to go to store variable locally. I am unable to get it working at the moment - too buggy. If you figure out the logic behind a local scoreboard in Flash I'm all ears! Good luck with your project. I'll post my code here if I ever get my scoreboard working.

No worries man, I am always glad to help out the community.

You didn't say to change the first text that reads "Click to start" but I took the liberty to do so.

Took me a second to find what that font was called, was going to make it comic sans as a joke but I restrained myself.

Here are two versions for you, one is just what you requested and the other I added a Green Button in the beginning for a bit more arcade feel to it. Let me know which one you like best.

Recap:
  • Removed the "copyright: seethru.co.uk" text from the beggining
  • Added High Score script to save "Best:" score locally
  • Changed start screen main text to fit Arcade buttons. From click mouse to press button
  • Added arcade button to start screen for dramatic flair  :blah:

Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Still haven't had a chance to really work on the "High Score Board" frame yet, will let you know if I make any headway.

I am hoping you will be starting construction on this build really soon, can't wait to see it in a cabinet.

I use "Macromedia Flash MX Professional" (Garrrrr)

PM me with the flash game and I will take a look at it after I add one to the helicopter game. Wont be too difficult to modify it for yours, although I am sure your game is much more complex than this one.

Once again attached are the .swf files and here is the links for the .exe versions

Haha, thanks for the compliment. I am nothing compared to Sjaak, I am glad he took up my suggestion to build the Felix game, mine wasn't turning out 1/100th of what his is now.

Green button idea came to me in a fit of starvation haha When I get focused on something I neglect everything else as well.....

I removed those lines, well moved them off screen because it is needed to run the game.

I don't want any of your money for this, if I get the "High Score Table" working you can shoot me a little something something if you wish.

Actually, I would like to make a Helicopter serial plate for you if you want to buy one from me. Give this game and your cabinet that legit Arcade feel to it. If you havent seen the work I have done check out this link

This is the main reason why I am helping you, I love the simplicity and challenge in this being an arcade game. I want it to look like it was meant to be an arcade game and not some flash game thrown in a box. Also, I think I want to make one as well, maybe with a different design for the cabinet though.

Flash 8 should work fine. Let me know if there is a compatibility issue with my FLA file.

Here is the SWF, EXE & FLA files.

And just the .swf attached for good measure

Don't be afraid to let me know if there is anything else that you would like to change and\or add.

Here is a snapshot of it without the bars.

Also I was working on the "High Score Table" again and it hit me, if I did implement it in the game....how would you input a name to the table?

I don't like the idea of more than the one button you have on it.......

Forgot about clearing the saved "High Score"

To do this all you need to do is delete a folder.

XP:

"Documents and Settings/yourusername/Application Data/Macromedia/Flash Player/Shared Objects/your flash userid/localhost/"

That folder ^^ "LocalHost" ^^

You like AHK so if you wanted to you could put a small button somewhere in the cab that auto deletes the folder when pressed.

Is this going to be at your work? I would put a small coin door on it and charge them a quarter per 5 minutes or something like that. But I am devious

:gobama

EDIT: Actually it is a file deep down in that folder ^^ But I find that nothing else has been saved there.

You could just save the score without initials -- makes bragging rights harder to establish, but gives players a high water mark to compete against.

If you want to include initials, make it so each press of the button increments the first initial through the alphabet, space, backspace arrow, "End", then looping back to A . . .

When you release the button for >~3 seconds, it locks the current letter and goes to the next initial. (Unless you selected "End")

It will take a little longer than most games to enter high score initials, but this method allows you to do it with just one button.

BTW, if you want to make the process faster, make "End" the first option to popup instead of "A".

I have no idea how to fix that issue, but trust me when I say I know the frustration when you can't fit through the damn thing. I am not a flash game developer, I just know my way around "MX"

I would say ditch the high score table, but I will see what I can come up with.

haha, the productivity is flowing at your work

I don't know how I noticed this before but the audio is broken. I did some testing and it happens when the SWF is decompiled to FLA.

Test the original game here and compare it to my latest version. You will notice that my version the audio does not react right away to you clicking.

I will see what I can do to fix this.

CoryBee - Helicopter Game 2.1
« Reply #29 on: April 13, 2013, 09:57:01 am »
Damn I am on a roll with this program.

I present "CoryBee - Helicopter Game 2.1"

  • Fixed Audio "Lag"

Here are the files, included is also the audio file folder requested

It seems it gets broken every time you decompile it, even after my fix. Let me know if this becomes an issue when you are trying to change the sounds, it shouldn't if you don't convert to FLA & just save the SWF file in "sothink".

Cheers!

Yes there is a limit to the length of the audio file. I also forgot to add the modified audio files in my latest ZIP folder. Those were needed to help remedy the broken ones from version 2.0, no worries though I applied the fix to your audio files and set it to the right length.

Here is "CoryBee - Helicopter Game 2.2"

  • Swapped sound files for Tully's version

I have to say I love the new sound effects, makes the game that much better. Stereo explosion when the helicopter crashes was a nice touch.  :applaud:

Here is the updated version, audio files are there this time in case you want to edit them some more

Just finished with the serial plate, what do you think? And which do you prefer? I like to keep the picture on the left side and nothing on the right but thought a helipad might look okay there since it is simple.

The length is basically all you need to match, I can edit it a little bit if it trails too long. Would have to re-edit the FLA file though. So when you get done editing the audio files just send them my way and you wont have to worry about it.

I love the red LEDs when you crash, this is going to be a very unique cabinet.

EDIT: Haha, Just noticed the thread title update. That is the kind of payment I require, recognition!

Got bored and wanted to teach myself more about flash games and this game in particular. Obviously not polished, fun to swerve around being a smaller vessel.

You could make a multi-game cabinet and add other 1-button games, such as Canabalt.

No offense, but wouldn't it be easier to just make your own clone following some tutorial with a framework like Flixel or Flashpunk? You'd be in more control of how it handles things and keep from having a hard time ripping and modifying not your own work. Then you could wrap it native possibly with Qt like NAVE did and be done with it.

It would be 10x harder to go that route to make an exact clone of a game that he has played countless times over the years. Even the slight change in audio makes him itch.

What I have been changing is just to make it more arcade cabinet friendly. The game he wants on it is already there.

I was expecting to see some CoryBee in the serial plate. I'm building the cab and you're making the game better. Get your ass listed in the Serial No. or edit the Model No. or something.

Alright, I just didn't want to sign your cabinet and have you stuck with something you didn't want. I strongly dislike when companies and people do this which is why the first thing I removed was the defunct link at the top of the game.

Remember, neither me nor tully are game developers. I would not be able to recreate this game with any accuracy at least.

It'd be kind of cool to have a couple of buttons on the back that can trigger a different version of the game. Maybe one that's a little faster with a different color skin on the copter or a different model, now that you can tweak stuff.

This ^^^

I will get started on making this. Any ideas on what you would want the difficult version to do or look like. Faster? Red walls? Etc.....

Cabinet is looking good, you slapped it together pretty quickly. Any plans for t-molding? It is also much much smaller than I had first thought it would be, this thing will be a hit at your work.

One last thing, did you get any suggestions back from your coworkers? Anything to iron out or did you modify the audio files again?

CoryBee eats sheets of mdf, blank circuit boards with a dash of flash and spits out arcade cabs, serial plates and compiles code with his mind. :burgerking: You definitely got skills bro...Once your cab building skills match your computer knowledge, you will be an arcade super hero.

I like the style of the cab Louis, shape reminds me of the old mechanical junk yard style games

i've been eye-balling this thread since the beginning and im getting some plaques now, but what if Corey made a "arcade version" with higher quality graphics? in your dissecting of the game, are you able to replace the artwork without damaging the game? I was thinking it would be awesome to have elongated boulders instead of rectangles, and being that this would be a "higher quality" arcade version, it would intrigue people to play this version more... and if we could make it need credits would force them to feed it lunch money at his office.

It could be done. I will put some thought into it, having it need credits would not be too difficult of a task either. Would need some idea for what to replace though. The ceilings can be like part of a cave or something, I dunno. Well let's keep this thread void of this unless Tully wants it in his cab. I will start a new thread related to this if I decide to do more work on it.

WakaWaka!

The audio files I sent you sound pretty good to me. But the up and down sounds are laggy, the down clip especially.

Anything you can do about the lag or should I make different clips?

This version, 2.5, is it for me.  :droid  The sounds fit the movement well and help make the helicopter 'feel' heavy. Thanks so much for everything. I've removed the other versions from the shared drive at work and put this one there. I'll let you know what the pros think soon.

Sweet......but makes me sad that there is no more editing needed. If this is solid let's work on "FireRed" tweak it so it is difficult but not impossible to get past 200. Throw in an AHK script to close the current game and open "FireRed".

On the topic of playing the game without borders and smooth transition from pressing the power button, here is a method I think will suffice. Wont need the EXE file for this just the SWF.

  • Download GOM Player
  • Associate SWF files to GOM player if it isn't by default
  • Open GOM, right click and go to preferences
  • Go to "Playback" tab and check off "Always launch GOM player in fullscreen"
  • Go to "General" tab and change "Logo" to a black screen so you never see that it is loaded in GOM
  • Shell windows with the SWF file and it will run in fullscreen through GOM player

Cheers!

Ok people, I probably found out how to get it done.
You need to install flash player for internet explorer, not just "for the other browsers" version

So I guess install flash player in Internet Explorer and that should fix it.

You should try and flute your dowels if you plan on gluing them... it will allow glue to distribute for better adhesion.

I have been working on the size of the "Attack Blocks". Changing them makes the game break though so I am re-writing a bunch of it to accommodate. Once I am successful with that I can change the sizes\shape\etc of it without any issue.

Let me hear some more ideas people. One of my orig. ideas for the hard mod was a star wars themed one haha. Have a bunch of sound effects already.

Damn it! You guys are going about to cause a theme change.  :lol  The bezel graphic can easily be swapped out by unbolting the top. The side art... maybe I can cover the whole side with plexiglass and come up with a way to swap out side art prints. /ponders

Black sides, with a cut-out for vertically-installed, decased LCD widescreen displays so their panels are right behind the side plexiglass panels. Instant side art!

As long as the game play is the same. I'm up for different themes. If we can come up with a few good versions, would adding a select screen be a difficult thing for you Mr. Game Tech?

I say keep the "Helicopter" theme, then hack a gamepad to use AHK with some buttons on the back to change the game by loading a new SWF file. Just so you don't lose that nostalgia.

Also, this way I don't have to write in a new portion of the game again.

I'm not familiar with Shelling Windows.

Forgot about this statement. How have you not shelled windows man! Vital step so you don't see a computer behind the machine.....

http://www.gameex.com/download/instantsheller.zip

You will definitely need this as it will hide your mouse cursor in GOM, cause every time you click it will pop back up. A black dot will not show up.

An easy beginners way:

  • Let it choose the default shell program because it will only let you choose EXE files and we need to load an SWF one.
  • Click "I am ready do it"
  • Go to start > run > type "regedit"
  • Click search and put in "gameex.exe"
  • Should find the registry entry we added to change windows shell.
  • Change it to the path of the SWF file, something like "c:\helicopter\corybee-helicopter-game.swf"
  • Voilla!

Looks good Louis.
I like the angle aluminum. It might match the helicopter theme more than regular T-Molding would.
But you can get chrome colored t-molding which would have (probably) looked good too.

Doesn't look like i can change the color. Well I changed it to green and it only did it to a few frames of the animation. The rest is a morph shape and can't edit it in resources.

Cool. Whatever is easier for you.

Now what to do with the stripes? Leave 'em but change the color or ask him to change it? The stripes look ok to me, but that pink isn't meshing.

How about making the lines yellow? Since you have the yellow circle on the side art.
Just a thought   :dunno

Great work on this fellas

Perhaps try the stripes with the Blue from the helicopter blades instead of the pink. Or swap out the letter color to the blue and do the stripes in the same white of the copter body. Or the lettering in the Blue and the stripes in the same green as the rest of the green portions.

So I have been looking through the FLA file for the past couple of days when I had the chance. I don't see anything pertaining to "morphshape 86 & 89". Seems I need the original files to change this up. If anyone has any skills to do this please chime in.

:woot

I know I'm late to the party but Instant Sheller is cool as ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I followed your directions and it worked up to the point of altering regedit. I had to point sheller at a different .exe because I don't actually have gameex. Anyway, I pointed it at MAME just because I had it on here. I searched for mame, found it (I think) changed it to the .swf file but no luck. So, I just made a script with AHK that simply ran the .swf which was associated with GOM. Compiled that script to Helo.exe and set sheller to that and it works.

Sheller is limited to an image that's 640x480 16bit so I've got come up with an image for the 'boot screen' Right now, it's a full screen image of the game in black and white just for the hell of it.

Someone mentioned on Friday that having some music would be cool and I agree. Something simple that has a good driving groove to it. Probably find something from an old arcade rom or NES, lots of good stuff there. I noticed that GOM can be set to "always on top" so I should be able to add mp3 line to the script and have it set to loop with WMP.

Once all this helicopter stuff is finished, I've got to add instant sheller to all my arcade cabs.

Thanks, man.

Instead of the button, why not use a joystick with only up/down motions?
Also, is there any need to fire with this game? Maybe shoot at enemy planes or copters?
(Good work as usual LT)

Edit: Added a quick and sloppy drawing to illustrate how easy it would be to add a build your own joystick.
(I really do need to learn how to use sketchup.)

I was thinking you should go with a big oversized button but I prefer DaOld Mans idea of a joystick maybe fashioned like a real helicopter flight stick.

That's the type of button I was thinking of, they sell them at Gremlin Solutions over here in the UK.

Here's what my friend came up with for the bezel art.

I was pretty set on using tinted plexi but after seeing this... Do you think this would show well behind tinted?

Late reply, but wanted to say that you could always sandwich the artwork between two pieces of plexi...clear in the front and tinted behind the artwork.  Best of both worlds...

Oh yea I meant to say that too. Loving the way this looks, the aluminum siding is beautiful. The size makes my head hurt, the whole time I thought it was pretty big but it is barely the size of a truck tire.

You better pretty up that back panel or find a spot under the control panel to place the serial plate

Cheers boss!

I think it looks good. A couple more coats will probably fix it. Just dont get carried away and spray too much on a coat.
Too late now, but next time if you spray primer it first, I have found the finish paint coats are more even.

Yep, Looks like a mini killing room to me. All you need is a table and a large knife. Can't wait for the final season.
Keep at it, If you need to use a high grit sandpaper and then hit it up with a few more coats.  Unfortunately if any of your blemishes are at the base level you will never get rid of them.  Don't fear too much I reckon a bit of sanding and a few more coats and it will be fine.

That is such an awesome little cabinet! The serial plate brings it all together, if it wasn't for that you might as well stop building...... :lol

How does the game play with a button instead of a mouse click?? Looks like it works fine from the video....

Anyways, it is one unique cabinet. I don't think I have seen one made for a flash game before.

I will start modifying the hard mode for you after you let me know what features you would like on it (smaller heli, etc).

You do good work!
It rocks that you can take your projects to work and even have the boss playing with them!
Does your work need help? I can carry your projects back and forth to the car, make coffee, and even dump the trash cans. LOL

Elegant. I can't think of a better descriptor, & I mean that as a big complement. :notworthy:
"Godzilla is a warning. A warning to each and every one of us. When mankind falls into conflict with nature, monsters are born."

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
The bezel looks great ( as does the rest of the build ! ) - think you made the right call with the change in color scheme  :applaud:
