Favorite game you never played until MAME?
« on: October 01, 2012, 06:10:58 pm »
With the thousands of games available using MAME, what's your favorite that you had never even heard of until you discovered it on MAME?

Mine - Mighty Pang and Super Pang

I don't think I ever saw those in an arcade growing up but I'm addicted.

Mine - Mighty Pang and Super Pang

Those actually got a PS1 release, oddly enough, and are quite fun (the only reason I knew about them before MAME).

For me, there are so many... Jungler and Juno First come to mind (both long forgotten, never ported Konami games), and lately I have been playing Atari's old Super Bug.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Vendetta.  A friend introduced me to this as I somehow never played this in arcades.  It's a good fun game.

The big innovation on that one being you could kick people while they were on the ground.  Consequently, there was a line to play it in the arcade.  Check out the leather queen enemies on the world rom version sometime.

Big soft spot in my heart for those fight and go right games but they're not much fun after one playthrough.

Puzz Loop 1 & 2 were games I never saw in the wild and we played the crap out of them on MAME.

I'm Sorry

It's always on my favorite list and when I introduce folks to MAME I always bring that gem out so I can say, "take a look at this crazy ass game from japan"

Juno First is awesome.  I had never heard of it until trying it recently in MAME.  Jumping Jack is another one.  I don't remember ever seeing it in an arcade, but it was the late 80's before I was frequenting arcades so it was probably out by then.

You said game(s) plural, right?  I don't remember ever seeing any of these in the wild.

VERTICAL ORIENTATION:

Tail to Nose - simple overhead formula 1 racer.  Only needs two buttons and 2 directions.
Astro Blaster - sadly, I never saw this until mame, which is shameful!
Astro Fighter - not as good, but mesmerizing.
Pinball Action - I play this a lot.
Lunar Rescue - addicting

HORIZONTAL:

Tank Force - 2 player overhead tanks
Hat Trick - 2 player overhead hockey
UO Poko - puzzle game
King of Dragons - a 'run to the right' beat em up that I frequently play through all the way with my son.  Easy and satisfying.
Quiz and Dragons - fun but terribly dated trivia game with fantasy theme.  Fun at parties with 30 somethings.  Brush up on your prog rock.
Space Zap - 4 way goodness, reminds me of Cosmik Ark for 2600

Favorite?  Let me get the list . . .

The Outfoxies
Black Widow
Kick / Kickman
Strike Force

Tons of great shooters I can't think off off-hand.  I love just about any of the later Japanese bullet-hell shooters.

Good topic.  Funny thing about it for me is, aside from some high profile classics (Pac-Man, Missile Command, Asteroids, Frogger, etc.), all of my favorite go-to games these days are ones I discovered in the last few years in MAME.  My biggest first-hand arcade experiences were in the mid-late 80's to early 90's--book-ended roughly by Kung-Fu Master on one end and MK2 on the other.  For whatever reason, I never have any desire to play the games that were my favorites back then, which is funny, because if somebody would have told me in 1991 that I would one day be able to play WWF Superstars on a cabinet in my basement, I would have had a nerdgasm.

So, for me the "post-MAME favorites" are too many to mention, but DoDonPachi and Black Widow immediately come to mind.  Aside from those, I recently posted an article on such a thing, focusing on games that might appeal to non-gamers: http://cynicaster.blogspot.ca/

I only play games I own the original roms for...

no seriously until MAME I had never head of The OutFoxies. What a great game. Salary Man Champ [and all like it - bishi bashi anything] have a big place in my heart as well even though I've been rocking bishi bashi in the arcades since before I knew of mame.

Bank Panic
DooDanPanchi
Penguin Brothers
In the Hunt
Heavy Smash
Skydiver
Ninja Baseball Man
to name a few I can think of

I keep seeing everyone raving about Juno First, guess I'll have to finally break down and try it.

I played Space Zap as a kid all the time back in the day.  We had one in a bowling alley and I think I actually own it now.  I can trace it back to a roller rink and the roller rink guy says he bought it from a local bowling alley.  Only 2 bowling alleys in my hometown.

Nice!  What are the odds the other bowling alley even owned a Space Zap. Small. I think it's safe to say that's the exact machine you played as a young'un. Talk about preserving the past.   :applaud:

Robotron - All the buzz, all these years and I never had tried it (To the point that I am starting to regret the choice for a  theme on my cab  :hissy: ) I'd say 95% of the cab playtime has been on Robotron.

Another discovered brain tester games that I never seen/heard before Mame are:

Boxy Boy (Lots of thinking and trying).
Chicken Shift (You think it's a simple game, but it will SCREW your MIND)

Love the idea of this thread, as my goal for Mame is to discover games I never played, or games that I did not play enough.  I manged A Putt Putt Golf and Games back in the day and remember when the Willow PCB's came in.  I fired up the game after our tech built it out and knew I wanted to spend time playing through this title.  Never got the chance, and too busy building cocktail's now... times never change  :banghead:

Sea Fighter Poseidon, Block Block, Radarscope, Pang 3, Cosmo Gang, Kitten Kaboodle, Rug Rats, Halleys Comet 87, several others I can't recall right now. I make it a point to check out stuff I don't know of just about every time I run my cab. You never know what you'll find if you have a full set of roms....

Ah yes, the old "if you think it's boring or easy then you're not playing it right" trope.  Sometimes games just suck.

I see what you're saying, but it's hard to argue that a bottomless pit of "credits" doesn't have the potential to neuter the experience of a game.

I'm completely on board with the single credit approach, especially for shooters.  It's even better if you throw in some friendly competition.  Seeing how many points you can squeeze out of that single credit and going toe to toe with others really takes the fun factor to the next level, at least for me.  Games need stakes.  When you can just mash the coin-up button all day no matter how much you suck, there are no stakes.

Mustache Boy. This game is highly addictive and I'd never heard of it before! For a 1987 game, one of the baddies sure looks a LOT like Squidward from Sponge Bob too :)

Is it wrong of me that I get bored with shmups after a couple of credits? Maybe I'm just not that good at them.

Any game that can be quarter pumped has continues turned off on my machine. It makes things a lot more interesting when you try and get farther/higher scores with just one credit.

I always liked space games, and those were a couple of great ones that I just never ran into before.

Battle Balls

I actually owned this board and the rom you have was dumped from my board.  I sent it to a fellow in Australia and he dumped it, and it was added as an unsupported game in the next release of MAME.  My little contribution.

Going to the arcade was something I just didn't get to do much as a child.  I only remember of 5 or 6 times getting to go to an arcade, which would have been in the 90s.  There were only a handfull of games i actually got to play in the arcade...so i discovered tons of games thanks to mame.

my favorite game i discovered through mame has to be millipede.  my boss introduced me to it after helping him to set up a mame machine...he made me realize that i needed a trackball.

Oh, and Berzerk.  Also awesome and amazing.  I was born in 1980, so just too young for those in my arcades growing up.

I used to play Satan's Hallow in the arcades, and that machine had the best sound next to (and it was literally placed next to) reactor.  One of the very few games I could last on one quarter.   I wish I could say the same about reactor....

Ninja Baseball Bat Man

Lode Runner (didn't know there was an arcade version)

Asteroids delux - I'd only ever seen asteroids before
Assault - futuristic overhead tank game

Actually I never played any of the games when they came out but I did watch my mates play (I think I was too tight with my money).

The Apple 2 version is WAY better IMHO.

Curious what you find better?  Usually I much prefer the originals, and I was using the C64 version for a while, but the arcade version has better graphics (although I definitely have a soft spot for the original graphics), I like how you don't have to press a button just to stand still, and technically the fact of being able to save the high score through MAME Is nice.  And between Lode Runners I-IV you pretty much get all the same levels.

Yeah, DoDonPachi is the best shooter I've ever played.  I like it more than even the other DonPachi sequels that came after it (Black Label or whatever it's called).  They just never seemed to match those wicked cab-rattling explosion sounds from DDP, which make me grin every time.

Some other games I've discovered recently...

Horizon - Moon Patrol Shmoon Patrol... give this one a try!

Eggs - Addictive as hell

Zoo Keeper - underrated as hell

Fastlane - like Dodge 'Em on Atari 2600, only much cooler

Magical Crystals

Funky Jet - I have no idea why this one is fun, but I keep going back to it.

I'd compare it to hearing one of your favorite songs from 30 years ago covered by (insert name of latest tween pop star here).

The newer version might be more technologically advanced, but after enjoying the original it's like going from prime rib to spam.

Also the arcade version has a relatively smaller play area -- defined by the number of hole-sized spaces on the play field.

I think the Apple version would play even better with an analog stick like the Kraft joystick -- pretty sure that the game was designed to work with that type of stick.

YES!

I kid you not, everyone I have shown this to, wants/needs to beat the game in one sitting. I actually stopped showing it to people for this reason.

Its a game made by Stefon because it has everything.

Four Micheal Jacksons, Henchmen in trench coats, Bobo the monkey, Mecha-Michael, Children tied up in the corner, Mega-villian Danny de Vito in a ponytail, Thrusting robots, Dick slanging vacuum robots, zombies, Literal Killer Dance moves and you leave the club by turning into a spaceship.

Thanks to Cory Bee I am now addicted to Spiritual Warfare.... :lol

I need to start playing that again, was super addicting when I was younger. Now I can actually laugh at the religious references that I totally missed before.

I never played the arcade version of Super Breakout until MAME, but had played the other 9,001 clones/copies/ports, so it's not the same thing.

So I'll have to say Tac/Scan, but only with the spinner. The Atari 2600 version is worth playing as well. It is up there with Kaboom! in my book.

Old thread but my thought is to give yourself a stack of quarters... virtual or real, and stick to that.  That was the arcade experience. Have a daily budget and use it up. Then quit. Would you have spent $300 to beat metal slug back in the day? Probably not... but you might have spent $5 or $10.  So use that up and tell yourself that is it.  Eventually that should drive you to get better. I wonder if a patch or build of mame would actually support this custom budget as a hard limit in the future.  Might be interesting.

Shmups aside, my favorite games are definitely the Tetris The Grand Master (TGM) series. It's Tetris in perfection. You don't play for points but for a grade (with the highest being grand master) and the whole game is optimized for speed.

Here's a nice essay about what sets this series apart from "normal" Tetris: http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/tgm-en/tgm.html

It would be pretty easy to write an AHK script that would turn off the computer after the user pressed 5 a certain number of times.  Just set it one more than your budget and be sure you don't quarter feed gauntlet right at the start.  That should let you skip around games and play your arcade over say 25 presses of 5 before you day is up.

This shouldn't come as much of a shock considering my forum name and the style of cab I'm building. But... Daraku Tenshi is my favorite that I never would have played if it wasn't for MAME.

Well reading this made me go home and DoDonPachi......never played before and wow it is a killer game....

There are so many that I had not played in the arcades back in the day but now happily "chunk" quarters into with the MAME....

DoPachi and DoDonPachi have been placed into the favorites list.

Another vote for DoDonPachi.  I never knew it existed before I set up my first machine.  It was one of the first to go in the favorites.  There's also this silly Japanese puzzle game with a squeaky-voiced cat, where colored balls are launched into the playfield pinball-plunger-style.  But I can never remember the name.  It's always great fun when I manage to find it again  :lol

And as odd as this sounds, Robotron.  I played it a bit when I was a kid, but couldn't afford to get good at it.  There are a number of the harder "classic" titles which MAME (in a cabinet with proper controls) has allowed me to really come to appreciate.  MAME offers as much re-discovery of the classics as it does discovery of more obscure titles, to which many never had any real exposure.

Today I loaded up Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu for the first time  :applaud:. There goes my Sunday, or at least a good 4 hours of it. I really enjoy the whole series and this one seems just at good as the others. I'm sure I didn't get any scores that I won't be able to crush in a couple of days because I was just starting to really get the hang of the new shots by the end of it but damn it sure was fun.

The 'silly Japanese puzzle game with a squeaky-voiced cat, where colored balls are launched into the playfield pinball-plunger-style' is Uopoko, one of the games Cave made that isn't a shooter.  There is a sequel on the SH3 hardware "Puzzle! Mushihime-Tama"

Anyway I just emulated a new IGS PGM game, 1up.com says "If I had to rank it among all of the brawling games ever released I would say it was in the top 10 of all-time. I would go further and say that it belonged in the top 5" ( http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9093601 )

I have a feeling this is going to end up in most people's 'to buy' lists now, it's very popular in circles that know it (especially for the multi-player experience) but relatively unknown outside of them.. so probably something people are going to end up posting about in this thread too, seemed an appropriate place to mention it..

I've got a new game that I've been really having fun playing... I didn't find it through MAME, but that's the only place I've played it. I found a game called Flower from an arcade walk through video on YouTube. It's a game similar to Galaga, except it has bosses and more powerups. Rather interesting game.
