Thanks to Cory Bee I am now addicted to Spiritual Warfare.... :lol

I need to start playing that again, was super addicting when I was younger. Now I can actually laugh at the religious references that I totally missed before.

I never played the arcade version of Super Breakout until MAME, but had played the other 9,001 clones/copies/ports, so it's not the same thing.

So I'll have to say Tac/Scan, but only with the spinner. The Atari 2600 version is worth playing as well. It is up there with Kaboom! in my book.

Ah yes, the old "if you think it's boring or easy then you're not playing it right" trope.  Sometimes games just suck.

I see what you're saying, but it's hard to argue that a bottomless pit of "credits" doesn't have the potential to neuter the experience of a game.

I'm completely on board with the single credit approach, especially for shooters.  It's even better if you throw in some friendly competition.  Seeing how many points you can squeeze out of that single credit and going toe to toe with others really takes the fun factor to the next level, at least for me.  Games need stakes.  When you can just mash the coin-up button all day no matter how much you suck, there are no stakes.

Old thread but my thought is to give yourself a stack of quarters... virtual or real, and stick to that.  That was the arcade experience. Have a daily budget and use it up. Then quit. Would you have spent $300 to beat metal slug back in the day? Probably not... but you might have spent $5 or $10.  So use that up and tell yourself that is it.  Eventually that should drive you to get better. I wonder if a patch or build of mame would actually support this custom budget as a hard limit in the future.  Might be interesting.

Shmups aside, my favorite games are definitely the Tetris The Grand Master (TGM) series. It's Tetris in perfection. You don't play for points but for a grade (with the highest being grand master) and the whole game is optimized for speed.

Here's a nice essay about what sets this series apart from "normal" Tetris: http://bsixcentdouze.free.fr/tc/tgm-en/tgm.html

It would be pretty easy to write an AHK script that would turn off the computer after the user pressed 5 a certain number of times.  Just set it one more than your budget and be sure you don't quarter feed gauntlet right at the start.  That should let you skip around games and play your arcade over say 25 presses of 5 before you day is up.

This shouldn't come as much of a shock considering my forum name and the style of cab I'm building. But... Daraku Tenshi is my favorite that I never would have played if it wasn't for MAME.

Well reading this made me go home and DoDonPachi......never played before and wow it is a killer game....

There are so many that I had not played in the arcades back in the day but now happily "chunk" quarters into with the MAME....

DoPachi and DoDonPachi have been placed into the favorites list.

Another vote for DoDonPachi.  I never knew it existed before I set up my first machine.  It was one of the first to go in the favorites.  There's also this silly Japanese puzzle game with a squeaky-voiced cat, where colored balls are launched into the playfield pinball-plunger-style.  But I can never remember the name.  It's always great fun when I manage to find it again  :lol

And as odd as this sounds, Robotron.  I played it a bit when I was a kid, but couldn't afford to get good at it.  There are a number of the harder "classic" titles which MAME (in a cabinet with proper controls) has allowed me to really come to appreciate.  MAME offers as much re-discovery of the classics as it does discovery of more obscure titles, to which many never had any real exposure.

Today I loaded up Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu for the first time  :applaud:. There goes my Sunday, or at least a good 4 hours of it. I really enjoy the whole series and this one seems just at good as the others. I'm sure I didn't get any scores that I won't be able to crush in a couple of days because I was just starting to really get the hang of the new shots by the end of it but damn it sure was fun.

The 'silly Japanese puzzle game with a squeaky-voiced cat, where colored balls are launched into the playfield pinball-plunger-style' is Uopoko, one of the games Cave made that isn't a shooter.  There is a sequel on the SH3 hardware "Puzzle! Mushihime-Tama"

Anyway I just emulated a new IGS PGM game, 1up.com says "If I had to rank it among all of the brawling games ever released I would say it was in the top 10 of all-time. I would go further and say that it belonged in the top 5" ( http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9093601 )

I have a feeling this is going to end up in most people's 'to buy' lists now, it's very popular in circles that know it (especially for the multi-player experience) but relatively unknown outside of them.. so probably something people are going to end up posting about in this thread too, seemed an appropriate place to mention it..

I've got a new game that I've been really having fun playing... I didn't find it through MAME, but that's the only place I've played it. I found a game called Flower from an arcade walk through video on YouTube. It's a game similar to Galaga, except it has bosses and more powerups. Rather interesting game.
