What space sim is most suited playing in a cockpit
« on: June 20, 2014, 08:41:58 am »
With the Year of Star Wars upon us, it has occurred to me to a Space Sim played in a cockpit might be fun.

What games would you recommend for immersive play?

I bought the Wing Commander series for a song.  Send me some suggestions.

>Wing Commander Series - The bundle is gone, but you can get the games at gog.com
>Elite: Dangerous https://elite.frontier.co.uk/  It should be noted this is in Beta.  They refer to it as Premium Beta, like you get to pay to be a beta tester, but that isn't uncommon now, with the greenlight and kickstarter phenomenon
>Wings of St Nazaire It should be noted this is in Alpha
>Freespace 2 http://www.gog.com/game/freespace_2
>Freespace 2 with mods (list your favorite mod you've installed) http://scp.indiegames.us/ or Hard Light
>Xwing vs Tie Fighter *unfortunately, a person might have to buy it used*
>Star Citizen

So before this thread just turns to a list of games that are in space.  What I'm asking for, if you'd like to contribute, what are your favorite games, why did you like them, do the games feel realistic in a "sitting in this chair for hours and it feels like I'm flying a spaceship" and most importantly, what was your controller configuration for each game?

Thanks.

There is a new game coming out that looks interesting called No Man's Sky

There are also the "X" series; With the latest being X-Rebirth. I've installed it, but only played it a couple hours. Seems decent so far.

Just looked at that.  Ye gods I hope they get it to release!  I love procedural generation, played a game back on the Genesis that did that for the planets.  It was a fixed seed so it was the same main map each game, but the scope of the game was greatly larger than the Genesis had any right to have.  I think it was Starflight?

X Wing vs Tie Fighter,  Reason Just because it's the best Starwars flight and fight out there  :) Played with old school joystick very similar to this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENIUS-MAX-FIGHTER-F-16U-4-BUTTON-JOYSTICK-WITH-THROTTLE-/390851330886?pt=UK_Controllers_Attachments&hash=item5b008e0346
Try and find collectors or trilogy edition of this one.  As an aside to this It seems that someone modded Starwars alliance to play all the xwing vs tiefighter missions.
http://www.pcgamer.com/uk/2010/10/11/play-x-wing-with-upgraded-graphics-trust-us-you-should/

Homeworld 2 with any Mod you like, A friend of mine took a whole bunch of different bits of different mods and we had a good game of Star Trek vs Babylon 5. a little buggy but fun never the less. I haven't played them but it looks like some of the mods made for homeworld have been done for cataclysm and X3 as well  :applaud: :applaud:  That was played with something very similar to the joystick below but used a whole bunch of keyboard commands too If I remember correctly, It was a fair few years back now and my memory is somewhat fallible.

Elite, The original vector graphic version - played with bbc keyboard, then commodore 64 joystick and keyboard.  I loved this game for it's open endedness it's challenge, Hell I even enjoyed the grain and tech runs to get enough money for auto dock.  Check out Oolite for a slghtly more modern take on the game.

I don't know why they have not remade this. When it came out we were all on dial up so with the internet as it is now the multiplayer would be far more enjoyable and maybe the graphics could be improved. It really is a great game that.

Can anybody get the Sky Rogue download links to work?  I clicked them all and they all 404.  Tried multiple browsers and clicked on that "download links not working" button to no avail.  Want to give this a shot.  Anybody care to drop box it to me?  Need a win version.

Strike suit zero DC seems  like a  good candidate but will not work on my XP-32 SW cab (maybe it is time for 7-64).
It does though  work in another cab with an ultrastick and seems to not need to many keys in my 5mon test - will play some more tomorrow.

Nice!  I have added that to my wishlist on steam.  The bundle was on sale during a summer sale.  There is another game, Strike Suit: Infinity it is at the humblebundle store for $1.39.  I'm gonna give that a shot.

Both are single player games from what I read/watched.  The video for Infinity calls it a simulator, so it seems like it would be good prep for practicing until Zero comes back at a discount.  Thanks for the share.

I have been playing strike suit zero (free game on xbox one last month) and it's pretty good. Not mind blowing, but it's fun to play.

Still not played SSZ with my yoke yet (and really you need a few more controls - thrust ect) but on a HOTAS it is great fun.
Now I still only have about 20mins playtime on this but so far it is way more fun and light hearted than XRebirth the other space game on that rig.
