Anyone into PS1 games? I got a bunch of rare japanese games.

How often do people run ps1 emulators on their cabs?

Not as often as you might think, as 50% of people tend to only run arcade emulators, about 30% run other console emulators, 10% only collect genuine arcade cabinets, and the final 10% are still undecided.

I personally run them in my cab as there are some great fighters that are actually better emulated or better played on PS1 (ie. Tekken, Soul Blade etc.) and some other great games that play surprisingly well with arcade controls, however with PS1, N64 etc. you are moving into the 5th generation of consoles, which were natively created with joypads and analog controls in mind and not born from an arcade background as previous consoles were, plus from an emulation point of view are relatively high rresource demanding and have imperfect emulators with a more complex setup - not always ideal for an arcade cabinet environment.

if you have a drawer under your cp maybe you can put the 360 pad in there

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

My cab runs Mame, Daphne, PSX, NES, SNES, and Genesis.

I only have a handful of PSX games on there, though I have well over 500 PSX games. (Burned, duh)

No accusatory offense intended here, just curious; where did that statistic come from?  Is that from your sales info?

Just a casual observation of the BYOAC boards over the last few years, comments from customers and a general vibe I get from friends on this scene. I'd say it's a safe assumption.

Did you guys know that 85% of statistics are made up on the spot? ;D

To your question, if you want to run concole games on your cab, there is nothing to stop you.  PS1, N64 and even Dreamcast emulators are pretty mature at this point even if they run higher level emulation than say, MAME and you can play most games without problems (pSX for PS1, Project64 for N64 and NullDC or Makaron for Dreamcast, see NonMESS for details).

As for controllers, there are plenty of options.  You can go as cheap as getting a pair of logitec USB PS2 controller knock-offs or get fancy and go wireless.  There are plenty of PS2/Gamecube/XBox to USB adapters out there.

I set my cab up for NES, SNES, N64, GBA but when Wii Homebrew came of age, I switchid all of my console emulation to the Wii and the cab is now basically arcade only.  However, N64 emulation on the Wii is not there yet.

If you enjoy them and don't have another suitable platform, you should go for it.

I gave my cabinet (System 7) to my sister (she has 4 boys) So they will def get more use out of it then i ever will.

I was cleaning out my house and i found 2 huge spindles of ps1 games. I was real close to throwing them out.
Then i was thinking about emulating them for my next build. I know when i first tried several years ago the emulation was pretty crappy.

Maybe ill give it another shot. Thanks Guys.

PS1 emulation is pretty much 98-99% now...all of my favourites run beautifully.  Some great shooters that play fantastic on a cab.

I am also pretty much strange enough to play FFVII on my bartop...most times I like to play RPGs on the couch/desk but you know...on a barstool with a drink in hand...its pretty good in front of the bartop.

Glad you managed to get light gun games working properly - I never could cos all PC guns are crap and the setup gave me headaches once I did find a decent calibration. The better solution for me in my first cab was a real PS1 with proper G-Cons, almost exclusively for Point Blank and Time Crisis.

FF7 on a cab plays fine so no it's not weird, but personally I play that and all my RPG's on my PSP, usually on the bog. It beats leafing through the Auto Trader.

Are there PSX emulators that even offer light gun support?  Cause I know that ePSXe doesn't even emulated the Guncon, I mean, not even using the mouse will it fake the Guncon or nuffin.

The 'pSX' emulator does emulate guns through the mouse, and many PC guns simulate a mouse (eg LCD TopGuns). The problem was always calibration for me, not the software's gun support. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend pSX as it is WAY easier to use than ePSXe, does not depend on high-spec and graphics plug-ins, and nicely filters the games to not display too sharp.
