How to secure video card to side mounted motherboard
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:41:52 am »
ok so my motherboard is mounted vertical in my cabinet and the video card slides into the vid slot. This is not a problem however when some intense action starts going and the cab starts shaking a lil, you can see the vid on screen kinda jiggle. Im pretty sure this is due to the vid card moving in the slot...... any ideas on how to secure it?

I recently added a decased computer to my cab as well.  I run a component dongle off of mine and the card drooped because of the cable weight.  I bought a wood stake at the hardware store cut it to length and made a slot in the middle for the cables to pass through.  I glued and nailed that to the plywood that the mobo is mounted to and then screwed the card to the stake.  It's really solid and doesn't droop any more.  Attached is an awesome paint rendition.  I can take some pics when I get home tonight if you like.

I just got a heavy duty dome head screw and screwed it into the wood. I had to file down the screw shaft near the head as it was too wide to fit the gfx cards mounting hole...

That's a nice idea. I have a backplate laying around as well as some component cages I've thought of using for stuff like this.

that looks like a good one lettuce.  i was just thinking of ways to do this tonight.  my card is just sitting in there now, like it has been for a year or so and i havent had any problems with it yet, but i'd like to secure it..the long screw/bolt idea looks like a good one.

Lettuce, where did you get those legs that are holding your motherboard to the wood (the white plastic L shape ones in the top right corner of the pic)?

I'm looking for something exactly like that!

What I did was just use a cable clip to hold the cable to the side, and this locks in the card pretty good.

what I did was... I screwed my mobo in a sheet of wood (not the cabinet wall) with those plastic legs, then I screwed (glued) another piece of wood right where the video card will be seated and then I screwed a hole on the bottom of video card (some already have a hole) and I screwed it to the piece of wood underneath. Hope you got the pic.

Just use a small blob of hot glue on the ends where the board meets the slot. It's incredibly tough stuff, non-conductive, and if you ever need to swap out just give it a quick swipe with a stanley blade.

after reading this thread the other day, and moving my cabinet...my agp card popped out of the slot for the first time.  i used standard little brass threaded motherboard stands that come with just about all PC cases.  i drilled some holes in the wood, threaded in those inserts, and then screwed the motherboard in just like it was in a pc case.  this didn't put it up high enough to allow the video card to go the entire way into the slot, so i had to bend the bottom part of the video card bracket to make it fit, so i just bent it at 90 degrees and drilled a hole in it.  then i installed another motherboard stand and screws the card to it...i is rock solid now...i'll take pics later if anyone needs them.

If you want to REALLY secure your cards and don't have an old motherboard try to hack up try a:

The one I linked has threaded hole built in that could be used to mount it into your cabinet.
