Problems painting my bezel / monitor cover
« on: July 09, 2014, 02:10:01 am »
Hi everybody,

As the title says, I have a problem painting my monitor cover.
What I had in mind was covering the monitor with plexi. I thought I could cover the part in front of the screen with tape and labels (rounded edges!), as I had seen here in the forums, and then paint the rest of the plexi black.

The problem is that the paint I am using is not covering the plexi. After three layers of paint I can still see through it :hissy:, and it's all kind of cloudy as well.

Any tips on which kind of paint to use for this job? As you can imagine, I don't want any light to bleed through.
Tips for stuff I can buy in Europe are especially appreciated!  ;)

Thanks guys!

Any kind of black spray paint should work. Make sure to paint the inside. Even if you need 10 layers the outside will still look good.

Thanks!
Good to know that I should paint the inside - I would probably have painted the outside.

How have you done the transitions between the tape strips needed to cover the later to be transparent part of the plexi?
Do I have to be afraid of paint creeping in where the tape strips overlap?

In other words: How have you managed to get a clean border between painted and transparent area of the plexi?
Maybe I am exaggerating this, but I only have this one piece of plexi left and want to get it right at the first time.

Just cheap flat black works perfectly in my experience.. I did this recently for my old cab before selling it and it came out beautiful.  Regular scotch brand blue painters tape seems to work just fine and not bleed, just run your fingernail along the edge just before you paint to make sure you have a good seal.  The "fine edge" stuff should work even better, and if you have super fine details, you can always turn to automotive edge tape.  Be sure to remove the tape before the paint is cured (dry to the touch but slightly tacky still) or you will end up pulling paint up with the tape.

In the past I have used a cut vinyl sticker to mask plexi.. just a reverse of whatever I am painting, stick it on and after painting, peel it off and the detail is fantastic.  Small lettering might require a razor edge to take off, but with patience it works out great.

And as mentioned, ALWAYS paint the back side, not the front.

I hear you can use really fine sand paper first, though I havnt tried it. But I did a prctice test with just spraypaint and it works fine.
Try flat black krylon, look for one that says for wood and plastics. I would recommend spraying really thin, like just mist a little, wait, do it again and again until fully coated.
