Best Party Games?
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:49:20 pm »
Ok, another one of those "Best of" threads

I searched the boards here and couldn't find any thread for this particular genre.

I'm looking for a good list of "Party Games". Ie the kind of games you might put on a list for people to play who aren't (heaven forbid!) particularly into video games.

I'll start off with a short list (ok, really short).

(Updating the list as we go, to keep the names all together)....
World Class Bowling
Shuffleboard
Simpson's Bowling
Shuuz (Horseshoe game, never even heard of this one, but it looks good)
Cameltry (marble rolling game)
Goldentee (Golf, duh!)
SuperSmash Bros (haven't tried this one yet)
Parappa the Rapper (haven't tried this, looks like it's a PS game, not mame, per se)

arcade games but might appeal to the non-gamer crowd
Dr. Mario
Tetris
Puzzle Bobble
Klax
Asteroids
Pacman
Centepede

Ideally, something for 2+ players.

Any thoughts?

4 player beat em ups are fun:

TMNT: The Arcade Game
TMNT: Turtles In Time
The Simpsons
Xmen (also has a six player version)

and loads and loads of others. Top-down shooters are a blast too.

Everyone still loves playing Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man when we have people over. The non-gamers can't be bothered with the other 200 games listed...

If am invited to this party, I'll play any Pac Family, Asteriods, Donkey Kong and some Video Pinball.

If music is involve, I'll give Rock n Thread a shot.

Best party I've ever been to had two people fighting in the front yard when I showed up.  Must've been 100 people gathered around cheering.  Took me a while to figure out that although they were really pummeling eachother that it was paid entertainment.  Lots of dark bedrooms make good parties, so does free booze... oh and rock band - somebody has to be playing rockband.

great suggestions!

Never saw Shuuz before, that one looks very promising. Same with Simpsons bowling.

I'm not sure about Asteroids, DK, PacMan, etc. For the casual gaming crowd, probably, but I'm thinking people that would never have put a quarter in an arcade game before.

The beat-em-ups is a good idea, and +I+ think they're a lot of fun, but I think you have to be at least a casual gamer to get into them.

I'm guessing by Skeeball, you mean an +actual+ machine?  :) That'd be awesome, if I had a dedicated, huge gameroom  :(

I feel you on the space issue. I got such a good deal on these, I couldn't pass them up and HAD to make room. Both were "not working" when I got them. Just brought the second one (on the right) back to life this past week (still needs a few lights though). The little girl had a sleep over last night and out of all the games in the garage, the only ones they were interested in playing were the skeeball machines.

That version of poker where you don't use chips and instead gamble clothes.

The cat stands tall and green,
Well, he ain't no prize, and there's no women his size,
And that's why the cat's so mean"

"You don't know Jack" I make that into a drinking game. When you get the answer right they take a drink. If you get it wrong you take a drink.

World Class Bowling, ShuffleShot, Golden Tee, and sometime Shuz.  These always gather a crowd around the arcade machine...Actually the PC version of Risk gets a lot of action as well.  :applaud:

These titles are the go-to titles at my house when several non-gamers are around, especially Shuuz ("Am I hot or what???") and Shuffleshot ("Geeze, SLOW DOWN!").

I find that the common threads in party-friendly games are a) simple and immediately obvious concept/objective; and b) level of difficulty that doesn't kick the novice's arse in 20 seconds.

I've had no luck getting people interested in greats like Missile Command, Defender, and Robotron because of off-putting difficulty level.

The original Pac-Man, Galaga, and Burgertime do well for whatever reason; presumably because they're very recognizable, the gameplay mechanics are dead simple, and novice players can last longer than 30 seconds.

NBA jam, Street Fighter 2, and Tekken have done well in my basement as well, although I'd never play them unless a guest wanted to.

Warlords would be great, but you really need a 4 spinner cocktail table to play it correctly with a group.

Bishi Bashi Championship!!!!

Don't forget Hyper Bishi Bashi and Salary Man Champ as well! Excellent group games.

Another thing I like to do is get a really really hard game, for example Mikey - and make it a contest who can get the furthest/highest score.
