What are your favorite "obscure" puzzle games in mame?
« on: December 04, 2010, 09:46:05 pm »
I've pretty much got the well known stuff I think, just wondering what else people like to play. I could load them up one by one, but I figure it's just easier and faster to ask, and it's more fun to get a discussion going. I have stumbled on a couple from Japan that I like, namely Auqa Rush and Dharma Doujou. What else should I add to my list?

And well we're on the subject of puzzlers, let's play name that game. I once played a puzzle game in mame, pretty sure it was from Japan, where I think you're at the top of the screen in a boat maybe and the playing field underneath you is underwater. I remember liking it, but I just can't remember what it was called or anything else about it. Anyone know what game I'm thinking of?

At the R3play expo in Blackpool recently I played a puzzle game on a JP Candy Cab and I can't remember the name of it. Basically you played a dog (I think you could choose different characters at the start but I was a dog) and I had to rescue a boy that had fallen down a well or a mine (I think?). I had to control the dog through different coloured sections of the mine and get deeper underground. Do you guys know the name of it?

Tetris isn't obscure, but I like playing Tetris the Grandmaster in 20g mode . It's an extremely fast version where you can slide the pieces after they are down. You have to enter a code to get the 20g mode. After inserting a coin, press down 8 times on the joystick then press buttons C,B,A.  Other puzzle games that get played are -

Maniac Square
Chicken Shift
Boxy Boy
Logic Pro
Pipe Dream
Block Out
Tube It

Uo Poko?

Thanks, but that's not it.

Bah! I might even have the details wrong, it's weird how your memory can distort stuff sometimes. I think I would know it if I saw a screenshot of it, so if no one comes up with it, I had a brainstorm: Use RomLister to copy all the puzzle game snaps to another folder and then just browse through them. A lot faster than loading up every puzzle game rom.

And thanks for the game suggestions guys, got a chance to try a few of them, and this is the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Stuff that's not just another Tetris or Puzzle Bobble clone (as great as those games are, I really don't need to have umpteen variants of them).

Don't know if you'd consider it a puzzle game, but Diver Boy has your character above water and diving for stuff.  Mindless fun, but fun nonetheless.  Great for kids.

Another game that I find challenging is Anteater.  Again, maybe not considered a puzzle?  (Maybe not even "obscure")

Does "Cameltry" count?  Spinner recommended but can be played with trackball.

And let's not forget "Puyo Puyo"!

I enjoy Anteater as well, but I would call that more of a maze game/pac-man variant. Still, real good fun with lots of strategy involved!

I dont know if this is obscure, but I like Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. It's a gem bursting puzzle with Capcom fighting game characters.

Also, Klax.  8) "It's the 90's, it's time for Klax" 8)

some puzzle which are maybe not so obscure, but unknown to some, and worthy of mention:
Money Puzzle Exchanger (NeoGeo)
LandMaker (Taito F3)
Wetrix (Dreamcast)
Chu-Chu Rocket (Dreamcast)
Logic Pro / Logic Pro 2  (this one is similar to kakuro and minesweeper)

Feeding Frenzy is a water-based puzzle game though there is no boat.  I too would have said "Puzzle Uo Poko" based on the description.

It's more likely to be Puzzli, there is a boat, with a cat in it..

There was also a sequel on PGM hardware, but it doesn't work due to the protection.

Actually... Puzzli has a boat with a person in it... Uo Poko has the cat... but it's not in a boat (duh!)... but rather just underwater (which I always thought was strange... but I love what happens to that cat when the game is over!).  That said,  you're probably right in that it's Puzzli...

The cat is sat next to the person, giving him the fish to throw in ;-)  Both are good games anyhow.  Dharma is another good Metro puzzle game (as is Pururun if you can get the hang of it)  Mang-Chi has very similar mechanics to Dharma, as does IGS's Puzzle Star (but that doesn't work properly due to protection)

Cats are the gatekeepers to the underworld for the egyptians. That means they have a lot of Egyptian souls to barter with, and the Japanese need something to pay their video games makers in this deflationary market. And since the cats are vain and are willing to barter souls for cameos, the circle of life goes on. Except for the dead Egyptians, whose souls are being stockpiled on the shelves of Japanese video game makers at an alarming rate. It's all true. I read about it on Google.

Also, Ataxx is a pretty fun puzzle game.
