Spinal Tap/Marshall amp arcade - updated 4/16/2015 - Glass
« on: December 03, 2010, 12:38:48 pm »
So I've been scouring this site for about a year now, and have had plans to build my machine for lets say about 5 years or so. But everything keeps getting in the way! Moved away, bought a house, did some serious renovations, took my part time home business into a new and full time direction. I'm still not done my renos, but I don't imagine they will be too much longer.

My fiance was randomly browsing the air miles page, seeing what she could get with her 400 points. The answer was very little. I decided to check mine, I carry the card and swipe it but never redeem. Well the time for redemption is NOW! I got $300 in gift certificates for the local home store [Rona]. Not my first choice, but if I can get gift cards for there why not? That will ll cover the cost of building the cabinet itself and leave me about... $240 left.

It will be 3 weeks before the gift cards arrive, but until then I can plan. Unfortunately business has slowed considerably for my home business during the holiday season, so we're on a strict budget - no extra spending allowed, especially since it's the time to be giving or some such nonsense.

So the details:

2 player standup
7 buttons each in the "Street Fighter with Run" or "SF/Neo Geo" setup
3" trackball in the middle
Spinner in the middle but on the front [there has been a lot of talk about this, but never seen it done... someone send links?]
2 aimtrack guns with built in holsters
2 USB ports on the bottom lip of the control panel for plugging in wired xbox360 controllers for 4 player if need be
24" LCD or possibly 27"... I'll have to check it out
30" wide
24" deep
6' tall + whatever the wheels/skirt measure... so probbly 6'3" or so
The control panel will be entirely between the sides of the cab - no wings or protrusions.

It'll be done up to fit in with it's surroundings!

Black elephant skin tolex/vinyl covering
White piping around the screen
Bezel made with marshall speaker grill cloth
Pinball flippers [white or black havent decided]
short admin panel with pause and exit - simple and out of the way
white t-molding
Happ coin door wired up for a credit when you insert a coin or push the reject
black buttons/ball
brushed bronze control panel - with numbers that go around the trackball to ELEVEN

Background of the front end [mala] made to look like the front of a Marshall 4x12 with the grill cloth and the logo. Background music and audio clips on the front end will be random spinal tap tunes and clips from both movies and the various performances/appearances they have done... for example:

The marquee will be something like Spinal Tapped or something similarly easy and stupid [just like spinal tap themselves].

I will initially gut an x-arcade and throw the parts in to play and swap parts in as I can afford them. The X-Arcade is just a temp. solution as I already have it.

So what have I done to date? Pulled apart 6 PCs from my graveyard and built 3 somewhat decent compys - 3 ghz processor, 2 gigs of ram each with windows xp. After this one is done I'll be making 2 minis, one for my nephews/niece, one for my godchildren. They will each be one player + usb port, using the x-arcade stuff. I've gotten ahold of about 6 hours of spinal tap material and edited it all down to about 4 hours of good stuff - everything from the songs to them heckling Metallica about stealing their album cover. Nigel Tufnel visiting the Marshall factory to unveil the JCM900 series [they go to twenty as standard]. I've mastered it all to be smooth from one bit to the next: countless hours of eqing, compression, limiting etc etc. I've got the background of the front end ready and am working on the menus.

This will sit in the lounge area of my recording studio. Let me give you a spiel on my studio: it's effin huge for a home studio, 1000 square feet. I am the only one who works there, and it is ***NOT*** open to the public. I write music there for some little things but hopefully soon some bigger things. I do however love to rock and have big jam sessions and jam parties, and my studio doubles as a wicked jam space for me and my musician buddies. Hence: The arcade machine. It's popular enough being on a TV with the x-arcade, but it's really lame IMO.

Why such a big screen? Well, a 27" widescreen LCD is totally not arcadely authentic, I agree. But I was thinking having a large screen would be a better way to save space in the lounge. I could forgo a bigger TV for the guests [the lounge doubles as a second guest bedroom, it has a pull-out couch, mainly for godchildren/nephews/niece]. The angle would be annoying pointing slightly up and away, but like I said it's mainly for the kids when they visit. I was thinking of putting a sliding shelf in a dado removable from the back panel with the PC guts mounted to it, and from the coin door side an easily accessible DVD drive for dropping in a movie or whatever. And of course the obligatory HDMI port possibly on the back of the machine for my nephews who don't go anywhere without their Xbox360. All surface-mounted ports will be neutrik or switchcraft panel mount jacks.

I have a render, and I'll post it later when I get downstairs to the studio - don't expect anything much, I just did it for measurements and to check out the shape. My render is terrible compared to what some of you guys do. For example, my joysticks are just cylinders  :D

I got rained out of making the gun holsters. I got a good start on them, and if it hadn't been cold out I would've not run in for a cup of tea mid-way through. Of well. Here's the crappy renders, as promised.

#1 - side view. I updated it to the new look on the left; the marquee area was originally 6" but it looks much better at 8". The old one is up for comparison. That lady or hippie is 5'6.

#2, my inspiration. One of my marshall amps. The bezel will be MDF and wrapped with the speaker cloth, and have the white piping and marshall badge in the bottom corner just like the speakers in this pic. The cabinet will be wrapped in the same elephant tolex as well - and of course the brushed bronze control panel [probbly 1/8 or 1/4 with mdf behind, held together with the buttons].

I assume you saw Knievel's GH cab that looks like a Marshall stack?  Maybe you could "borrow" an idea or two...  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72311.0

Yeah I've seen his work. I can only hope it turns out half as nice as even his offcuts lol. I'm a fairly confident woodworker though, and while I'm not expert I have recovered a few dozen guitar amps in my day. I think it will turn out awesome.

It's guys like Knievel and Ond that inspired me to go all the way with my ideas!

First Update! The building beings! After getting rained out the other day it of course turned out to be a beautiful day where I was busy... all day. I took a time out and cut some MDF into the gun holsters, and glued and nailgunned them together. I dunno where my clamps are ATM, so the brads will have to do. These holsters will be mounted to the inside of the cab so you put the gun into them from a hole in the front.

Set with the backdrop of my living room practice amp and Mr. T action figure [NOT A DOLL].

Mine's 1 1/2", though it can be adjusted by using washers and such.

I only have scraps to work with until those gift cards arrive, so last night I was mastering the use of my biscuit joiner. I use it regularly enough but mine is really annoying to adjust  because to do 90° cuts I have to take off the pad. I can leave it on and adjust the depth to cut the same slot, but then it gets hard to hold steady and obviously I will not be risking that kind of foolish behavior. Anyway I got it down to an art now, so when the time comes to attach the sides I will be ready.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/2/CordedPowerTools/BiscuitJoiners/PRD~0548106P/Mastercraft%252B6A%252BBiscuit%252BJoiner.jsp?locale=en

I also picked up a 1/2"x 1" flush trim/pattern bit and made some junk to play with it. Lots of fun, lots of dust. Now I just gotta find a slot cutter and I'll be ready! We recently ran into some money but of course my home renos have to come before the fun stuff according to the fiance so I will have to tell her that it is for my studio equipment rack. Actually maybe I will use t-molding around that thing, the chrome stripe stuff is really nice.

Those renders look great!  I like your design.  It's classic, well layed out, the design seems very clean, and slim while still keeping the arcade feel.

I also like the placement of the spinner.  Much better there than mashing it behind the trackball.

Now get that gift card and get goin!

I like the spinner placement as well! I'll probably put numbers around it that "go to 11" for it, and it will be handy if I get one of those steering wheels that clip on. I was worried at first about it, but I didn't want to bash my hand into it if it was above the ball. I've read about people having a spinner on the front like this but never seen it done.

I didn't even think of that.  That's a perfect spot for a wheel.  You also might want to wire in movable pedals as well.

Player 2 joy for a shifter! whoo this just gets better and better... I think I'll see if there's some USB pedals I can have in the coin door or close by. These look expensive... but they have some FREAKING COOL STUFF on this site, and I'm sure it would work w/ Mame.

**found the prices... yup... expensive. I'll keep an eye out, but until then the buttons near the joysticks can do it.

This design is really nice and has a great modern look. I particularly like the metal panel. The colours seem to fit well as well. If it turns out as well as the renders, it'll be excellent I'm sure.

Great theme, now start building

Thanks guys, the renders are not for me to take credit for. I have to give a nOd to the ones responsible.

Today I stopped in at a place called Metal Supermarkets. I got a sheet of brassy goodness, 28 1/2 x 24" big. After a quick polish with Silvo it was like a big ass mirror. I LOVE IT. I am going to make the control panel and then bend this to size and lay it over top, held on only by the buttons.

Still waiting for those gift cards, there is a chance I will get them next week - I think I missed the cutoff for ordering things through air miles for xmas, but since it didn't specify what time zone the site was from I am unsure. Either way, getting this brass cut for me today was a huge deal, I was worried about the price of it because when I got an online quote it was $273... I paid $75 for this one. I will have to make a metal brake this week and test/practice on some scraps of galvanized steel I have laying around.

I managed to subdue the wrath of my fiance for my arcadely spoendage by giving her the Sims 3 for xbox 360 earlier than anticipated. Shes hogging the xbox now.

Not sure how much trouble you want to go to, but if you have an old distortion pedal, you can swap out the potentiometer in it and do a controller or joystick port hack.  You can get a USB joystick port adapter on fleabay for around $10.  I've tinkered with them and can show you how to wire it if you're interested.

Most people mash the  pedal anyway, so you could probably get away with just a switch.

Well in the past few days not much has happened. I did however build a metal brake, and the results are excellent, except for one thing. I cheaped out and used aluminum. Looks like I have to go and get some angle iron! So I suppose you could call this one a prototype. Here it is:

A close up of my advanced technology - 3 pieces of angle iron, a piano hinge, and a bunch of bolts.

And finally a sample of the bending action. This sheet metal is 1/16" thick and 12 inches across, which was about the bending limit of the aluminum. I'm sure that the angle iron I'll pick up later today will be much better.

You'll notice the metal stand I had this clamped to. Well I had a great idea and I thought I'd share. Space is limited. I say that but I've seen what you other guys have to work in and it makes my work area look like an empty gymnasium. Anyway, my stand was on sale for $15 at Canadian Tire last week, and it has some mounting holes on it for a table saw. I thought it would be better suited for a multi-use table, so the plan is simple - cut a few sheets of plywood to fit on top that mount to the holes... and make each one have a separate use. For example, one will be my metal break I'll probbly make today or tomorrow. One will be a router table top and so forth - soldering station, guitar repair bed, and anything else I can think of. And of course they will all be more or less the width of a sheet of plywood.

In other exciting news... MY GIFT CARDS CAME! Wow was I ever excited. But of course there's some stupid logic from my woman that isn't stupid. We are driving the car right now and the truck is not insured because the stupid thing is rear wheel drive and doesn't like our Canadian weather - spins out all over the place. So anyway I know I'll be getting a bunch of gift cards for xmas, so I thought I should just get day insurance one day after xmas and do a day trip to the hardware stores I'll be getting stuff from, as well as going to the recycling depot with the xmas supplies. So it'll probbly be the 27th when I get stuff, and weather permitting I'll be making my first cuts on the 28th.

And then something else awesome happened. I was chatting with my mom about my gift cards, and she was like "Oh I have some air miles, feel free to use them if you want." So yeah... I DO want. As in I DO want another $450 in gift cards! The shame of paying with all gift cards is worth the fact that it's free and should help me finish up my renos!

So I got the gift cards the other day, went to Rona, bought a bunch of flooring, installed it in one day. Then I went to rona again, and bought a buttload of MDF for various projects, all of which take priority over the arcade machine, like window sills and stuff like that. I finished up all the other projects in 3 hours, and made the first 3 cuts into the MDF right as the sun went down! 3 pieces, 48" x 28 3/4"... not the most exiting thing ever, but super exciting for me. I have one of the pieces in the living room, and I'm gonna sit down with a Dr. Pepper and mark out the coin door and gun holster locations. The other 2 pieces are for the back and top.

I also got some plywood and some 2x4s for a drum riser and also for the base of the machine. Tomorrow before I can work on this I need to lay down some vinyl flooring in the new laundry room, but it shouldn't take me long. I've been taking some pics but none of them are exciting enough to share yet.

Also, I bought a pack of Freud Diablo thin kerf blades foir my circ saw - and they are great. Thinner blades means they hog out less material, and that means less drag in the cut... you can cut faster, eliminating burning. I am impressed, and will buy them again.

Hardware shopping, installed flooring, installed sills + other projects, and still had time to work on the arcade in 2 days?  Wow, you work much quicker than I.

Post dem pics!

I'd love to see some vids of the metal brake in operation, if you can do that.  It looks like something very useful!  (I've got a window screaming for some replacement flashing.)

The work's looking awesome.

Yeah I'm pretty zippy - trying to finish my renos before the 3 year mark lol. It's a laminate but it is great quality. I really wanted more hardwood but the cost was too high unfortunately. Nearly $6 for the stuff I wanted a square foot. What I ended up getting was normally $4 a square foot, on sale for $1.79... and since the subfloor I built is so flat, there's no noticable give when you walk around on it. And no squeaks.

And finally, a pic of the front panel of the machine!

And my helper, Gordon the cat.

Here's one side cut, and the front for the coin door and gun holsters. I gotta smooth over the rounded corners with some sandpaper in the morning, and then I'll flush trim a double. The coin door fits PERFECTLY. It's pretty sweet. The gun holsters also line up very nicely.

I hope to get quite a lot done tomorrow, I hear mixed reviews - it may snow, it may be cold and sunny. I'll be out there if it isn't wet!

i like the thin line design.. whats the measurement from the back to the front of the control panel tray, and also the regular cab..  hope you understand what i mean..  the cab i build for my sister and probably make a copy for my self at the same time..  as the cab im working on now is  really to big for my needs.. ( the look smaller on paper )  a thin line is the way to go for me.  thanks, keep up the good work.

Here's the dimensions. The width on this thing, side to side, is 29 7/8 after assembly. I'm using 5/8 for the sides because of the tolex/vinyl wrap. If I was using 3/4 it would be an even 30". The inside dimensions are 28 3/4. Here's a pic of the side profile dimensions.

OK so most of the cutting is done! I cannot praise these blades (Frued Diablo)  enough.

Biscuit slots cut, base made, beginning the first gluing.

Looking very good. Love the shape but you've GOT to go with the brass coloured panel for the Marshall theme.

Looks great man! Cant wait to see more!  :applaud: I used to have a dodge dakota, 1991.. I loved that truck, I dogged the piss out of it, even toured in it a few times, and it had a ---smurfy--- cap on the back that was way to small, but I rigged it up with c clamps, but honestly, it was ugly as sin, but the most reliable truck I have ever owned. Cheers for dodge pickups

I plan on bending the brass today. And it's not brass coloured, it's actual brass! Damn stuff costs a fortune, even though I got a discount on it because the guy was excited about my project.

Anyway, I figured I'd show some more pics. Because I am really, really excited. This first one show my internal support for the marquee area. I learned from a lot of other people's mistakes, and kept it far back from the end so that I don't have dark spots on my marquee. I am sorry for their loss but thanksful that I learned from them. Also covered in foil tape.

OK so I hate to do this but I must say that after I build the control panel, my fast pace may slow down a bit  :-[ I'm running out of "extra" funds, and business is slow. Next I need the slot cutter for the t-molding and the vinyl for the sides, not a big investment - I may order one today. I found a great local place that has great prices on vinyl, the old ladies seemed happy to find a man walking around in their store and all rushed to help me, so it won't be too long before I get that going for me. I also need casters for it. I decided that I'll be wheeling this thing, and thought about different ways to make it stay put. I think I'll bolt the wheels onto the base, and then drill some finger holes in so that I can reach in through the coin door to engage the wheel locks. Maybe just a screwdriver sized hole so that I just stab at it.

Mainly the things I won't be getting for a while are the controls and the screen. I may just throw my x-arcade in there and a 15" LCD and be done with it**.

Anyway, I'm off to build a table to mount the metal brake to.

**obviously a joke**

My piano hinge broke on the first bend. Apparently the brass was too tough for it. No matter - I've got some heavy duty hinges laying around. I'll report back when I achieve ultimate victoly!

VICTOLY!

And of course here it is test-fitted. It's a little wobbly right now, I'll of course be mounting it to a CP made of MDF.

I'd love to see some vids of the metal brake in operation, if you can do that.

I can do that!

After my brake broke, I slapped it back together real fast, but it no longer does 90°... more like 40°. I could have made it better but I was kinda raged. So I bent every bend to about 40°, then hand bent the rest of it into shape. Having the crease made all my hand bends fall in the right place.

OK so today I made little progress... but still progress. I was outside for 6 hours today cutting up MDF for my various projects I have on the go - dvd shelving with a built in speaker system that I designed, trimmed the window sills down to size, and a whole lotta routing on my shelves. I had to cut up the MDF today because I have nowhere inside to store full sheets of it, so I keep it in the truck at night... and in the morning wqhen the sun comes out, it heats up the truck canopy, cause condensation to form on the inside and then drips down on the MDF. So every day I've been moving a bunch of full sheets, and doing that alone really blows as I'm sure all of you can attest.

Anyway, I zipped up the control panel pieces right as the sun was going down. Some weird angles there, but I think I got it right. I'll glue it up in the morning after I round over the edges.

Well, I tried to stay away... but I couldn't. The control panel is sort of together. I can't glue on the bottom lip or the top until I do a little rounding of the front, but I glued it up the front and sides and clamped it in place and took a pic. I know we love pictures around here.

I'll be doing more tomorrow for sure!

OK today I made some nice progress. I glued up the main part of the control panel! It fits super nice.
My patience paid off when bending the metal.
And finally, placed atop the arcade machine...

I need to glue one more piece of MDF to the top part of the control panel - that will force the metal into position. I'll see about that tomorrow though.

I won't have to lol. I may clear coat it. I know it'll get smudgy looking, but as long as it doesn't turn green I'm ok. I may give it a wipe now and then but I don't think I'll be bustin out the Silvo anytime.

Well I've been putzing along lately but still managed to make a few additions to the cab. Firstly, I bought some wheels for it - 2 on the back so it can be tipped backwards and driven like a hand-truck. They are the kind of wheels that don't scuff, and have a 200 lb weight rating each - I think I'm covered.

And finally, I went ahead and mounted the gun holsters. It is a nice fit - tight enough the gun doesn't roll around, loose enough that the gun astroglides in and out nice and eeeeeeasy.

I've done a few more bits on the inside of the machine itself, no pics yet. I plan on getting that all done and mounting he PC in there this week. Oh, and I drilled out the holes to mount the coin door.

Well, today I had a split shift at the local theatre doing some sound work for **shudder** a children's thing. I hate children's music, it's so catchy and gets in your head. And is annoying.

It is between shifts so I came home to feed my cats and haven't gone back yet. I managed to decase the OC I'll be using, make some standoffs for the motherboard and mount it, and plug most things back in to play with placement. I also used some leftover vinyl flooring I had to put inside the machine... why not?

Here it is - for some reason nerds get all gooey over computer guts not mounted in computer cases.

And here is the mobo, 3.2 ghz 2 gigs ddr ram. I may upgrade but it plays most things fine.

So today is my birthday and it was kinda uneventful. Pouring rain, a little work in the morning and the fiance was working out of town - I went out to the hardware store and trien to buy the things I needed to advance the cab some but they had very little in stock. I managed to get the PC mounted though!

The DVD drive is in a great spot. It is right inside the coin door if I ever feel like puttin software or a movie on. Other than that, things will just have to wait until I go to one of the big home stores.

I feel if it's hidden, I don't really care how it looks.  Thats why I never spent a ton of time cleaning up my control panel wiring and the inside of my cab isn't the cleanest.

The steel strapping should work just fine if you ask me.  Gives it character!

I don't think the problem is the material he used to strap down the HD and Disc Drive. But they can me mounted flat against the inside of the cab. Theres no need to have them standing up the same was as if they were mounted in a desktop.

Except for the fact that the slightest bump swings the harddrive around and it bumps into the wall - that can't be good lol. Same deal with the DVD drive. Plus, I need it to be neatly orgainized or it will drive me crazy. Yup, I'm one of those

Unfortunately I couldn't get the DVD drive where I really wanted it in the end, but no big deal. It's now mounted to the floor next to the power supply. I was going to use angle brackets to mount stuff but I only had one left in my toolbox. I ended up using the aluminum angle from the first metal brake experiment - it cuts with tin snips.

* Rick wipes brow.  Phew!

So close, and yet, so far.  My first concern was the perceived angle at which the HD was mounted.  Centrifugal force can - and still does - cause issues long term with hard drives.  A single platter that goes out of alignment impacts with the read/write head and kablooie.  My second concern was the mount itself, a single strap lets go, and you're swinging free.

Yup.  You got it.  That, and the organization thing is key.  I am one of those, as well.  (Hell, I'm that guy who's going to make sure all of his vinyl tie 'nubs' are facing down - or up - but certainly not at an angle, or mixed.)

Well today I had planned on working on one of my musical projects - but a killer headache left me incapacitated. I tried water, meds, napping... I even tried some headache meds. I don't usually take pills. They didn't help, and I still have the headache.

I figured rocking out wouldn't help so I grabbed my camera and took a few photos. I did some extreme close ups on my marshall amps, and loaded up mala editor and got to work. I am happy with it so far, it is very functional - just not very pretty. I will play with different fonts and such tomorrow. I am open to suggestions, music is the only form of art I have any skill at. I was thinking of bumping the screen shots up a bunch and putting the 3 guys from spinal tap in the bottom right.

And again:

And soime random Spinal Tap knowledge - they are rated out of 11 on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088258/

Looks great! Happy Belated Birthday! As for the headaches, every rocker knows that pills are no good, you need a pocket full of blow and dollar bills and a trip to the strip club!  ;D Kidding... Looking forward to seeing this finished.

A cool touch would be to replace the brass plackard in the corner with a blank one and have Mala put other info there.
Like "12 of 200" or game Manufacturer & Date.

I found some decent size pics of this Marshall radio that you might be able to cut and past parts from:

That thing is hilarious! Not worth $279 though!

That idea for replacing the Marshall badge is genius!

As one rock-n-roller to another, I like your concept.  Incidentally, my screen name on this board comes from the name I gave to a franken-strat I recently built.  :)

I like the amp theme, but for what it's worth, if I were using such an idea, I think I'd experiment with the amp photography a bit before settling on something so basic.  The first thing that popped into my mind was a close-up photo that kind of looks "along" the front of the amp, including controls, etc., such that part of the amp is in the foreground and extends off into the background (bonus points for a sticky, circular beer bottle print being visible on the top of the amp).  I don't know how handy you are with a camera (or what kind of camera you have) but if it were me I'd try using a depth of field trick that puts soft focus on the really close and far, and sharp focus on the Marshall logo (or whatever point of interest you like).  I'd do it like this:

- set the camera to Aperture Priority (usually denoted by "Av" or something similar on the mode dial--at least on Canon cameras)
- manually set the aperture to its largest opening (which is the smallest numerical value)
- mount the camera on a tri-pod or something steady (holding it won't work)
- set some nice ambient light (perhaps by a window in daytime) and turn off the flash (light from most camera flashes can be harsh and ugly)
- set a trigger delay so pressing the shutter button doesn't cause blurring
- press the shutter button halfway down to set your exposure by focusing on the logo (or whatever point of interest you like) and take the shot

The result should have your logo in focus with a softening effect in the immediate foreground and extending off into the background.

I'd take a picture of my own amp to demonstrate, but unfortunately it's stored over at the jam space.   ;D

Ok, I'll stop rambling now.   :blah: :blah:

I can run a camera ok. Not a wizard but I get what you mean. You've got to take into consideration that the bezel around the screen is going to be hardboard wrapped in marshall grill cloth as well, so if it were blurred out on the screen it might be a bit of a shock when it comes back in "3d" around the edges. I've got some new ideas to play with and a great pic of nigel, david and derek for the bottom right area - i'll post pics after I slap it together. Of course this might be one of those things that seems good in my head but will be horrible on execution. At least the front end isn't hard to do over!

Ooooh and while we're talking custom guitars, I have awesome plans to build one from scratch. One day I will do it!

About 13 years ago I had gibson build me a custom flying v, it is so awesome. It has a les paul neck, all mahogany with rosewood fingerboard, all chrome hardware, diamond plate pickguard and skull knobs. Classic 57 in the neck and 57+ in the bridge. It is one sweet machine. After all this time, it is still my #1.

I kinda like the simplicity of your Marshall layout so far. One thing I'd suggest is to do something to frame the screenshots - they just look sort of "pasted on" right now, if that makes sense.

+1

Some ideas:  gold album plaque where the album cover is the screenshot, old polaroid picture frame (google it!), front shot of the radio I linked to, stonehenge...
Even just a white border will make it look like a photo.  I think the polaroid picture frame would rock, but you'd have to chop it a little to get the aspect ratio right.

Thanks for the ideas guys! The polaroid picture idea is great! Maybe I'll borrow some lipstick from my fiance and write something like "For a good time call Jenny/867-5309" on the bottom of a polaroid and scan it in. I agree it looks kinda pasted on right now.

Today I got it looking better, the marshall badge at the bottom now displays the manufacturer and the year it was released. The things are a little tighter now - more balanced. The real progress I made was write a bunch of rock riffs for the menu - everything from subtle string noise for moving from game to game, palm muted chugging for switching between lists and some heavy stuff for entering/exiting games and such. Really makes it come alive!

Well I have been having issues uploading stuff to my website. But I finally got one file up there - and it's there to share. If anyone is interested in my menu navigation sounds, here they are in .mp3

http://permanentrecords.ca/files/others/ammp3.zip

I gave them all names but they are not 100% correct on where I used them. I am running up to the home centre today, even though they never seem to have what I want I'm hoping to get a t-molding slot cutter or a bi-metal hole saw for the buttons and trackball. More pics as stuff happens!

Today I picked up a 1 1/8 bi-metal hole saw and a mandrel. I drilled from both sides to minimize tearout and it worked perfectly until it got too cold and dark outside. I'll finish up in the morning. I drilled the brass from the back just in case something slipped, i'd hate to gouge up the brass. I also drilled the pinball flipper buttons!

I also painted the CP black just because the brass is a hair shorter on each side, and it'd totally piss me off if the MDF colour was visible when all was said and done. And I was also painting my new DVD shelves that I built, so it was a good time to do it.

And of course I decided that with the black I'll paint in and around the screen area, just in case. Though I plan on covering these areas with vinyl; we'll see how it works out.

Well finally an update! I sold some recording equipment and decided to spend  a portion of it on the arcade machine. I picked up the vinyl and cut it to approximate sizes. I also ordered the t-molding and the slot cutter. I should have done the slot before I built the thing but I'm sure it will just be a minor inconvenience. I ordered the molding and cutter from groovy game gear. THAT was n excellent transaction. Some websites take FOREVER to get to the checkout, GGG was smooth. I will be ordering from them again! The spinner and buttons for sure.

Here's the vinyl!

No actually. The amp vinyl is 3x more expensive, and not as nice to the touch. This stuff is upholstery vinyl, and was $25 for 54x80" rolls. It's a little shinier than the stuff on my amps, and has a slightly different "skin" pattern on it but for the price, and the fact that it is a little softer to the touch was the deal breaker. Plus, I could get it local without having to order online. I have used similiar stuff in the past on some amps, one of which I own - the Marshall 1936 2x12 [pinkish one on the right]

I got the black vinyl at fabricland but they have similiar stuff at walmart for the same price in the craft section.

Local stuff is always nice. I guess you will use spray adhesive?

By the way, that Gibson V in your avatar is pretty nice.
I used to have one in black with a white pickguard just like Kirk Hammett used to play sometimes in the old days (seen in Cliff 'em all) but it got stolen

Good luck on the project.
Will you be slotting for the t-molding before applying the vinyl?

Yeah I'll be slotting before applying the vinyl. I really want to do the vinyl right now while I have nothing going on but that could only end in disaster. I think my vinyl is a little too thick to do the "tuck and roll" style of application - but I'm going to test that out on some scraps when the slot cutter and t-molding arrives. Which by the way was shipped this morning!

I'll be using water-based contact cement for the vinyl - spray adhesive is messier and I don't like it as much. Contact cement goes on with a brush and is easier to keep under control in my experience.

The V is IMO the sweetest guitar ever built. I had it custom made for me a long time ago and it's still my number one. It is a Gibson, definitely my favourite "off the shelf" guitar brand. I've played a bunch of boutique and custom builds and alot of the extra cost is decoration. Who needs that when you can get some aluminum diamond plate and call it a day!?!!?

I have no patience whatsoever. It's been just over a week since I ordered from GGG and I can't wait any longer! Around 4am this morning I was tossing and turning and dreaming of the arcade machine. So here's a little story of my coin door.

I used to have a Marvel Vs Capcom machine. It asplode for various reasons, mainly I was beating some guy up and he grabbed a mic stand and threw it through the screen and ran away. Anyway, I sold all the parts from it and kept the coin door. A few years ago I stripped down all the stuff that it didn't need to make it smaller and to make it lighter, and also to make it less pointy out the back side. I cannot explain away why I wanted to do this, for it no longer makes sense to me. I made a perfectly functional coin door not work.

So I am planning on wiring the coin reject buttons to insert a credit. And I just figured I might as well make the coin door work for the sake of authenticity. I came up with various plans involving welding, gorilla glue etc etc and I make a prototype with construction paper. And it works perfectly! So why redo it, when if in the future it breaks it will cost me 3 minutes and a trip to the dollar store? I folded some paper over to steer the coin down to the coin microswitch and put some butterfly clips on it. Ta da!

I'm going to wire the coin switches in parallel so that either one will trigger a credit. And same thing with my pinball flippers and the 7th button on my control panel... that way if some jerk standing next to the machine mashing the pinball flipper it won't be an issue for most games.

Note that I hold no grudges against GGG - they were a pleasure to order from as I described above. However USPS has not updated my shipping info since the 2nd, and that was just saying that it had been sent. I'm a little discouraged - though for all I know it is sitting at the border [but if it had been dropped off there I would should have received an update on my tracking]. Maybe it will show up tomorrow, who knows. Definitely not me!

In the meantime I have made some good progress doing little things here and there.

For starters, I sprayed a bunch of truck bed liner into the gun holsters. That should be tough enough to withstand the in and outs of the guns. Spraying aeresol cans point-blank into a hole is bound to leave some splatter, so it looks like an emo kid crying now. I wiped down the overspray and sanded it smooth, it's just really bad looking right now.
Next thing I did was go to the dollar store across the street and get an 8" cake pan. I drilled a hole in it, and using the bottom bolt from the coin door [extra long one] I can now have something to catch those coins! And as a bonus, it totally makes THAT SOUND. *Clink* Here's a peek down a joystick hole.

Next thing I did was cut 2 holes in the back for the vents I'll be using. They're standard 4x10 floor register covers I found at home depot. The ones on there right now are plastic, but there are some very ornate brass ones I'm looking at, and then I'll mount 2 PC fans inside each of them. I also had a tiny lip on the back so I smeared some bondo on there.
And finally what I did today was made a new menu. Screenshot with marquee above on the left, game lists on the right, game info on the bottom left. I've got nearly all the info stuff I need - except controls.ini and mameinfo.dat. I have them but not for my version [137] and I can't seem to find them. It'll all come in due time though. All that's left to do it make something to go right down in the middle of the menu - I was thinking a little explosion with a knob on 11.

I also made my own rendition of the marquee and sent it along with instructions to my graphic design friend. Hopefully it will come back good.

Nice work brotha, from one guitar player to another I greatly appreciate what you are trying to accomplish with this. I am in the midst of a Ms. Pac Man restore myself. Can't wait to see the completed photos. Any particular reason why you didn't use the legendary Spinal Tap logo? That would look glorious on the maquee for sure.

Don't worry, it will be up there. I just had to do a quick sketch to show my artsy friend how to make it - sent her an email with my ---smurfy--- sketch above and some measurements. I told her she can do it after she catches up on her "paying" jobs as she just got back from a tour of Europe. So this may take a few weeks.

I have decided to put numbers to 11 around the trackball. I was deciding between the trackball and spinner - the trackball wins.

If it's any consolation, it took 13 days for a package (not GGG who I had no issues with) to get up the east coast from MD to MA. Really not that far.

You're west coast in Canada, so you've got customs to deal with too, always a delay.

I feel your pain.

FINALLY my order came... as I was heading out of town for a few days. I called a friend, we threw the machine outside, I routed the slot for tmolding, we put it back in the house, and then I ran like hell to catch a boat. I made it, surprisingly. Then I drank with buddies for 2 days, watched guy movies, and played Zombies!!! the board game. Now I'm back with the fiance.

I got home at noon today, and started spreadin glue!
Here it is as of ten minutes ago. I need to buff that brass up - my metal brake is unkind. I'll wait until right before the controls go in.

And finally the coin door is in and on. I'll be spraying the bolts black when I get some paint. But they are the least of my concern.

Well I got around to wiring the button on the top [stolen from my x-arcade] to the motherboard to power it up. And then, the floodgates of business opened. Being self employed has it's definite perks, for example not having a boss. And if it's something you really love doing - for example I am a composer. It looks like I will do very little building in the coming weeks as I have just been swamped. Might do a few artsy things here and there as well as finish the game selection menu and figure out VP for the fiance... but after I get over this flood of work I should have some cash!

I will be ordering the marquee, buttons, trackball, and joysticks to start. That'll get me a good gaming start! And then as funds allow I'll pick up the spinner, guns and whatever else to get it done.

I typically have a hard time with 'slim' cabs, but the depth of your control panel really has me looking at it differently, its very attractive. Too bad you couldn't have used real tolex on the outside, but I understand, that crap is way overpriced.

It's looking great - are you still doing the Spinal Tap marquee, or a Marshall type marquee? The word Mame would look cool in the white marshall logo script, over some grille cloth...The spinner with the numbers around it going to 11 is a first class idea!

I dont mean to hijack your thread but I had a question.

It looks like you only used wood glue and clamps. How sturdy is that?

Way more sturdy than if I had used just screws. I actually also used biscuits, it's freakin rock solid. If your parts are tight-fitting then really screws aren't necessary. I actually used screws and glue for a few places.
1) The base, holding the 2x4's together and also putting the plywood on to the 2x4's.
2) The gun holsters, I should have made them triangular so that there was more surface area to glue, and also so that I could stand them up to be glued. I ended up gluing them and then using screws to pull it together, because they couldn't stand on their own.

Real tolex is wayyyyy to expensive for what it is, VanillaGorilla. I'm doing a spinal Tap marquee, once I figure out my art problem I even get it printed for free. The numbers to 11 are going around the trackball instead of the spinner. I don't want them hidden if I have a steering wheel attached. Thanks for the kind words on my slim, widescreen machine... I know not everyone is down with either of those. I really like 2 things about my cab - one is the side profile. Definitely arcadey enough that there's no second guessing what it is [even though it's pretty slim at just 21 5/8 at the bottom], and the other is that the controls will fit between the sides of the machine. Not that there's anything wrong with having a "front porch" but this really simplifies a few things. Like not needing a bottom of the control panel - just take off the back and climb right in!

This relatively smooth vinyl is actually quite close to the covering on several of my other amps - my Marshall MG head, my epi valve junior, and my Warwick 4x10 [except the warwick is grey].

I'm actually repairing a JCM900 SL-X and the tolex is almost completely removed. The owner took one look at my arcade machine and asked if I could recover it in that stuff for him.

Arty art art!

The printer was kind enough to give me 2 copies of the vinyl decals "to 11" in case I messed one up. I went to a nice little automotive art printer in Langley BC that does fantastic work. I need some more money coming in before I get the controls but this is really starting to look good and come together. In the meantine, my nephews will be out with me all summer and I zipped up a little mini arcade for us to build together. They are 12 and 13 years old so about the age when they need to get some good hobbies going before they pick up some bad ones! So here is my little arcade that I have designed, I'll be letting them make any design changes and design the front end. I have all the pieces for this one, and it can all be cut out of one sheet of MDF [which is the only part I don't have besides t-molding - have the comp, screen, speakers, and x-arcade screaming for a new home].

The printer I used for all you people in Vancouver that may be interested is called Payton Thomas Industries and the marquee cost me $35 to get printed. It truly is beautiful! So I figured I'd add a link to their website and facebook pages.

Did you have the V made at Gibson Custom shop? You have a nice guitar, more of a one of a kind. The diamond plate gives it a nice touch. I've seen it used on on some other custom Gibson's also. They are also making a 7 string V now.

Nice work on the cabinet can't wait to see the finished results. I'm also following the Lime Arcade also.
I need a house to put stuff in, instead of an apartment with stacks of boxes.

Yeah it's a gibson custom shop. I actually had a mirror pick guard for it originally - but diamond plate is the shizz. I dunno if I mentioned before but the neck is a '59 les paul profile - nice and thick.

The lime arcade is a great experience for my nephews - I'll put up some pics in a few mins of yesterday's progress.

It's been a while, and I have done very, very little to this machine. But a friend came to visit the other day and he came bearing gifts. He was cleaning out his mom's shed and came across something so awesome that he knew I just had to have it.

After several consultations where I asked people where it would best fit, I decided front and centre.

The brass fits really nicely in with my theme. Of course. I may get some brass bolts and bolt it to the machine though because I've heard screws don't hold well in MDF. Better safe than sorry.

Unfortunately for me the reasons I have not been working on this as much as I'd like is because I am out of work and only making a little bit right now from my home-based business. Right in the middle of a big project my old studio computer bit the bullet and I needed to buy something new right away to get it done, so at least the little money I have been making went to a good cause. My new 'puter is smokin fast. As soon as I start bringing in the monies I'll be getting back on board with this build. It's epic and my friends are always disappointed when they ask if it's done yet and the answer is no.

Cap catcher?

It's funny you mention that. I have an idea for basically a cookie sheet with a lip on it that goes under the machine, and when the bottle cap drops it lands in the lip and goes under the cab. Then I can just pull the cookie sheet out and pour it in the trash at the end of the night.

Time and time again I have considering modding a mech to take bottle caps, and one day I might try it if I get another coin door. That would be really cool.

It stings a little when you get the warning that your topic is dead, and to make sure you really want to bring it back to life.

So I won't bore you with the details of my financial woes, except to let you know that they are gone (well, on the way out!) Being self employed is a tough business, and while I was down I am not out; I just decided to throw a few resumes out there and see if I can get some work, a real job, on the side :P Turns out someone was impressed and I landed a nice paying job in an unrelated field. I still do my audio and sound stuff though so I have extra, extra income!

Here is a fun picture for today that I'm very excited about.

I ordered some stuff today. Not everything; I'm going to order two guns and a spinner as well in the near future. I just figured I'd start out a little smaller and see if I want the restrictor plates for the u360's. If you look through this thread you'll see that I have been bad and hosted my pictures elsewhere and now all the links are dead. I'm going to go through and attach them tomorrow morning; they are all uploaded to this site now, like they should have been.

I am going to redo the control panel. While I like the original brass idea, which looked great at the time, isn't really Marshall authentic. Also I didn't heed the advice of everyone here and elsewhere. I didn't realize that the tarnishing would be so... hideous and destructive. I thought it would be just a wipe of the cloth and occasional buff procedure, but there are some serious issues going on with the brass now. I looked into clear coating but the (sexy) curves I put into it leaves a little flexing and I imagine that would just crack. The new plan is to laminate a new control panel with some Formica Deco series laminate in a brushed brass finish. I ordered a bunch of samples and one of them looks really close to the real thing. I did some comparisons and my marshall amps are all a slightly different colour. I took some pics but it's hard to show how close it is in person; the brass catches the light so my sample looks brighter but it's actually quite close.

The new control panel will feature a strip of white t-molding across the front edge or perhaps a black bumper/corner guard. Haven't decided on that yet. Same layout with the spinner in the front and all that. I will have brass mounting bolts on top for the joystick and trackball. I think it will not only looks slick but in my mind more arcadey - I can't recall a single arcade game that didn't have the bolts on top. I'll have to fiddle the the trackball and see if that's going to get in the way and if it will the trackball will have the hidden bolts. It may or may not also include some plexi over top. Decisions, decisions.

And here is the machine, I wiped it down a snapped a photo of it in the current state.

I've come around to this way of thinking as well. Carriage bolts on top just seem more authentic.

My parts arrived yesterday morning.

I unfortunately had to work then and today. I sat there all freaking day daydreaming about getting back at it!

I got home and cut a hole in the old control panel for the trackball. It for some reason doesn't work with Mala properly. I can use it to select games and whatnot however if I start a trackball game it doesn't let me play or assign it, but loading up a trackball game without a front end it works fine. So fine in fact that me and my wife had a great round of golden tee and then a few rounds of marble madness.

So I suppose it's a good thing that the brass control panel I had originally tarnished. Since I had already planned to scrap it, discovering that the trackball is too big to be that close to the joystick is less of an issue; I can simply move the joysticks a little further away. I'm also going to put the trackball lower on the panel than it was before, and then move the spinner over to the right parallel with the P2 joy. Should be better to play and still look fairly symmetrical. Today I went out and picked up some acrylic to use on the marquee area as well as a bunch of brass hardware. Tomorrow, weather depending, I'll zip up a new control panel and give it a whirl.

The bolts here are just temporary ones until I make the new panel and hide them under the laminate.

One of the skills I apparently never obtained as a child was sticking a sticker on straight. It took me an hour to get it on right and bubble free. But damn it looks good. I don't have marquee lights but I did flashlight it from behind and it really glows nicely. I will probably wait until xmas to get some lights, what I did for the Lime Aid machine was poke some xmas lights through some pegboard and mounted the pegboard in there; easy and cheap and great coverage.

The day looks promising - supposed to rain like crazy but it's hot and just a bit overcast, so I'm going to start on the new control panel.

yeah ok i'm a bit slow but....

It should be fairly easy to hide a reflective optical based thing behind this and wire it to a keyboard encoder to trigger a coin press whenever a bottle is inserted.

For lack of a better example, see http://www.johnsretroarcade.com/hardware_pinball.asp

I can just imagine the hillarity that ensues for games that encourage pushing in lots of quarters to keep going.

Yeah I had that going on. It looks like the issue was having some conflicting settings in mame and mala; it's working now and that's the important thing.
Other things that are working - the joysticks and buttons, and the automap plugin for the u360's in mala. The 'puter is now generating the master list for Romlister and then I'll be on to configuring the buttons for 5 and 6 button games, using romlister and CFG Magician.

I had a minor hiccup with the u360s not registering some button presses but then I swapped to version 2.3 to remove the shift functionality and everything is working as it should. This week I am going to find out how much that damn brass formica will cost me and if I have the funds I will order it. If not it'll get pushed back a week, but there's plenty of work to be done on this. For example I have decided to do away with the pause and exit buttons, instead adding a plate in the bottom left corner of the monitor bezel where the plate is on my amp that has instructions for pause and exit (up and start, down and start)

And here it is now. Looking rough but the laminate will make it beautiful again.

The bolts for the trackball will be hidden under the laminate, the bolts from the joysticks will be on the laminate and replaced with brass carriage bolts when I can find some with a big head. My local stores only had little ones.

I've just been putzing around on this; my new job leaves me with less time to do stuff. The only major updates are that I have secured the sale of one of my guitar amps, and that will cover the funding needed for the aimtrak guns. I will order them next week! I have also made an acrylic top for the control panel, and countersunk some t-nuts into the top for the trackball. I can hardly wait to get that brass laminate to cover the control panel If there's enough left over from the guns and extra long handles for the joysticks...

I have also decidedto go with GGG's TurboTwist spinner because the black inset knob looks more like a marshall knob than anything on the ultimarc website, and with a little imagination I should be able to get a brass disc in the hole and make it look roughly like this:

Can you believe that home depot wants $192 for a sheet of that decometal formica? I'll be shopping around for sure, and considering other options. On top of that, the guy who was going to buy my amp has put it back a week, as he was too busy to get together with me this weekend. I live on an isand and he doesn't, so that's definitely a big factor there. Of course he told me this today, the same day we were to meet

I picked up a screen today. Before I hear the whole "eww, widescreen, ewww lcd" schpiel, let me reannounce that this screen will double as a second television set for my nephews (and other visitors but mainly for them) and this cab will have an hdmi input on the underside of the control panel for them to plug in their xbox when they visit (they stay with me for 2 months every year.)

The screen is an LED by Insignia, which seems to be one of the cheaper brands out there. I chose this one because it a) fit the budget, b) looks pretty good, especially for the money, and c) most importantly has some pretty swell dimensions. It is a 31.5 inch screen, which is claimed as 32" on the box. The bezel is minimal. In fact, the thing is 28 5/8 wide, and my cab is 28 3/4 wide. Couldn't have gotten a better fit. The viewing angle is not great, but 2 people playing it end up in the sweet spot anyways.

I need to rebuild my mala layout to be widescreen and set the games to be 4:3 so that it will look right. However I played a round of Mortal Kombat II on this thing, and couldn't be happier. When I build the mount for it, I can move it back 2 inches which will be nice - it isn't overbearing as it is but moving it back a notch will help with the enormity of it. It will also come up an inch or 3.

The big widescreen will make you downright giddy if you get the taito type x widescreen fighters working on it.
It's also cool to play the multi-screen games like Darius and X-Men in MAME.

For MAME, you do have the option to run games at 4:3 with or without bezel art on the sides if you choose.

Well it's been a while and not much progress. Things that have happened: I mounted the screen, and this thing gets played a whole lot. I will post pictures sometime tomorrow when I wake up. I'm working the night shift right now.

The screen mounting took so much measuring to get right, there's just no play between the screen and sides so it had to be perfect. I got it on the second try, both left to right and top to bottom. It's mounted to a piece of plywood, which is mounted to the interioror of the cab on a strip of hardwood - fir, I believe. It isn't going anywhere. The plywood has a t-nut left over from the trackball mount and is held in place with just one bolt. Since there's nowhere to rotate it stays level.

As for the software side of things, I have been working on a new, widescreen version of the menu. It will probably be done tomorrow. The menu is widescreen, but when a game loads it goes to the proper shape which is excellent. I will try out some multi-screen games soon and test that out!
Next up will be mounting the awesome under-cabinet LED strips I got behind the marquee on sale. After that it will be making the bezel. I think I'm going to make it out of 1/8 mdf or hardboard (is that the same thing?) and then velcro it to the television. There will be no glass. Instead, the plan is to make the bezel, add some holes for the screen (duh) and the speakers and the sensor for the aimtracks which I don't have yet... and then wrap it in speaker cloth, white piping around the edge, and the brass badge in the bottom left corner like a marshall speaker cabinet has. Mine will not say 1960 lead, or JCM900 - it will have some brief instructions on exiting and pausing the games. P1 Up + (picture of start man) = Exit or similar.

Hopefully soon one or both of the amplifiers I have up for sale sell. That will fund the aimtracks and the stupidly expensive brass laminate. I looked around for other options, but nothing looks as good so I'm biting the bullet and am gonna do it. $189 quotes home depot - there's a specialty countertop company in town that says they "might" be able to do it, but I have to talk to the manager. Apparently they only make counter tops, not sell the materials... we'll see.

Too busy playing the thing! I'm at work until late, but I swear tomorrow when I wake up I'll bust out my DSLR and take some sexy photos for you pervs.

No one has bought any of my guitar amps which is a shame because Andy FINALLY has black guns back in stock, as well as the lighting option for the trackball. And I don't really have any extra cash laying around... actually I do but I'm finishing a long-running reno project.

Lime Aid however is really near complete! I'll post some pics and bump that one tomorrow as well.

So much sleep!

So I am aware that the plywood just looks nasty. Even the piece that i painted with the brass look spray paint (that I bought for another upcoming project). But if you can imagine it all squared up (the control panel isn't screwed together, it's just held on by gravity ATM) I think it will be stellar. The screen is awesome and awe-inspiring and a joy to play on. Just waiting on the funds... maybe I'll throw together the surrounds for the gun holsters. Or start work on designing the side pedestals - after some D&D and gauntlet I've decided to make some stand alone units that can plug in for the 3rd and fourth players. I have the material laying around to make them so it would be easy to start on without diverting the other funds.

Other projects I am forever working on include finishing up the trim in my recording studio, working in the garden (one of my neighbors' morning glory problems just dove into my yard), getting ready to install a patio and pour some concrete for a single hole mini golf.

The mini golf is gonna be awesome. It is just one hole, 30 feet long, and straight and level. But I am going to have some other things laying around such as a loop, some mini ramps, and some odds and ends so it can be changed up every time we play. Prioritizing is very difficult for me.

More and more baby steps. I have done quite a few little things in the past few months, however nothing really gave me the urge to micro-update until today. I have made the decision to remove the spinner. When I rebuilt the control panel I moved the trackball down to allow more space to play. There is not enough room for a spinner where I wanted it, and anywhere else will throw off what I have planned. I really only wanted it for Arkanoid, but have gotten pretty good with a trackball.

One of the little things I've done is swapped the screws holding the bottle opener for bolts with nuts and washers.

I installed 2 USB ports on the underside of the control panel for the guns, and received the guns a few days ago. They only had one in stock, and a kit for another. I only have one gun up and running right now, and it is super awesome. I'm really enjoying the quality of them, considering they are running the sensor bar setup. They aren't perfect, but they are pretty good. I made surrounds for the gun holsters as well. I made a surround for the screen that is off by a hair - I will have to remake that one.

I also purchased a light-up rocker switch similar to the one I have on my amp. This is sort of in place on the front of the machine, and controls the marquee light. I need a file to finish installing it, which I will pick up this week.

DOUBLE SIDED TAPE is my new friend. I used 3m mounting tape, with a 20lb hold, to tape my wood to my small router templates. I had to use my heat gun to get them off but it worked really well even when hogging out a bunch of mdf.

I am nearing the end of this build. So close, in fact, that I can make a small list of what is left to be done! Not necessarily in order:

  • Make a new bezel
  • Cover that bezel in Marshall style speaker grill cloth
  • Some white trim around a few parts of the machine
  • Cover the control panel in that brushed brass laminate, and apply the numbers to 11
  • Make my wiring pretty :)
  • Replace the computer and update mame

Replacing the computer is not super high on my list, but needs to be done. I am running mame 139 I believe and there's been a few advances I would like to take advantage of - as well as improve the speed of a few games. But first things first - finishing up the cosmetics.

I'm having a hard time finding this part of a Marshall amp for some reason:

Not the brass part, but the plastic surround. I am going to make my own brass bit in a similar style that explains exiting and pausing.

Speaking of brass... I have an appointment on Friday to go peruse some brass samples at a local metal fabricator. Very excited. I am going to get them to cut out the shapes but drill the button holes myself. Looks like it will be around $80 CAD which isn't too bad. So hopefully they can do it that day, assuming they have what I want. I am going to cover the control panel in 3 peices instead of one bent piece. Part of the reason I have changed the design in this way is to add more white to the design to simulate the look of the white piping on a marshall amp. Another reason is that all those supermen out there are shaving the bottom of their hands off during golden tee. Why can't they just take it like a man (my wife included)? Sissies.

Not as exciting as the brass - I ordered some mini pushbuttons, not arcade style - and they have arrived. I am going to recess two of them into the bottom lip of the control panel and wire them up as left and right click to my trackball so that I can have hidden mouse functions. Hopefully noone will notice them there, especially if they are recessed.

**Update**

I just popped in to the metal place, as I happened to be driving by and noticed the empty parking lot. Probably not all that busy since the big snow dump. They were really helpful, showed me the brass, and I made my order. Unfortunately they do not have enough in stock to complete my order, but will be getting some in the next few weeks. WEEKS. Boooooo. The suspense is killing me. I will need to clear coat it after I cut the holes, but that minor inconvenience is worth it.

It's nice that my last few posts aren't warning me how old this thread is. I am on a night shift right now so it is definitely the time for me to write a wall of text. I will update with pictures in the morning. I need to wipe the machine down and take some nice ones.

The brass came. Damn was that ever exciting. Drilling all the holes was not. I didn't have a cutter for the trackball hole - I tried using one for wood and it just got hot. It did however score a nice line so I was able to use that to guide my jigsaw. Not the prettiest hole ever but it's covered up by the ball's bezel. Adding the brass also brought the bezel up a hair and it makes the transition from panel to bezel to lip around the ball to the ball itself a little smoother. It has a better feel. So anyways after drilling all the holes, I peeled the protective backing off the brass and cleaned it like crazy. A few clear coats later I was ready to apply the numbers to 11.

The numbering didn't go so smooth. The transfer paper which is basically just wax paper ended up sticking like crazy to the clear coat. Maybe I was jumping the gun and it hadn't fully cured yet. Either way, I went to align it and it was pretty much stick it as it is, or order another one... so I stuck it. It is a little off-center and crooked as well. As you can imagine, I was a little angry about this. My wife noticed right away - she said "Oh it looks awesome crooked like that!" I tried looking at it through her eyes. It does indeed look intentional. In fact I really like the way it looks now.

I used FRP corners to go around the control panel's edges. After cutting them to length I just spray painted them. They are easy to work with, $3 for an 8 foot length, and solve a million problems with this hobby... worth checking out for sure.

The power switch on the front turns on the marquee. It's a nice touch that I am happy about.

The control panel weights about 30 lbs now. It runs all the way to the back of the machine, and is secured there with T-nuts. At the front sides, it is held in place by the black pushbuttons. There is no bottom on it except for the front lip, and on that lip are 2 tiny (secret... shhhhhh) buttons wired to the trackball for rmb and lmb. There is also 2 usb pass-throughs for the guns.

The only issue I have is that I cleaned out the inside of the machine and vacuumed it all up. And I suppose I plugged things into different spots, because gun on needs to be reset for each game that I had already set it up for - which is thankfully a small list.

I also put a washer betweek the stick and the bat-top, which has improved the height of my joysticks considerably. I will probably order the long handles and do the same thing.

As promised! The control panel is straight! I was just standing really close to it. In the last picture it looks curved, but that's just the close proximity with the lens. I also unfortunately scratched up around the rocking power switch on the front, but I'm not too worried about it. I have a feeling my crazy wife (who uses Superman technique with the trackball, and refuses to change...) will absolutely destroy the brass behind the trackball.

Sigh. The brass at the back of the control panel already has a massive gouge. I adjusted the trackball sensitivity to make it work better with this setup - there is barely room for any follow through. We went over this before the games. People didn't adjust their technique, and were smashing into it EVERY. SINGLE. TURN.

The scratches don't bother me. I knew it would happen. I just thought it would be eventually, and not on the first game! My wife, the worst of the bunch, has learned her lesson.

Oh, the shame of bumping such an old topic. I have ONE LAST THING TO DO... and that is have an instruction card I made printed. Today I picked up the glass, some form of greylight that is very dark and beautiful and mysterious.

Here's a before. I suppose for the big photo shoot I should have straightened the anti-fatigue mat ($3 well spent at the dollar store!)

And here it is with the glass installed. Just not enough to cover the little spot underneath the screen where you can see the guts hanging down.

Sliding in a piece of construction paper did the job however and it looks amazing.

When I put the instruction card up, I'll take some nicer photos with my dslr and share.
