Thoughts?  I feel a bit better about it then I did after the last one. Still trying to temper my enthusiasm.

Yep. The trailer looks great, but I was excited in '99, too.

It's like I told my buddy last night, I have to keep myself in check.

I simply cannot have a repeat of the fiasco that was Episode I.

I was so geeked for that, and showed up for a childhood obliterating gut punch.  I watched it again, hoping that it was just me and that I really missed the genius the first time around.  Nope, still terrible.  Never in my life had I been so disappointed.  Not even when John Elway destroyed my dreams obliterating my Falcons in their only Super Bowl appearance.

Well, your safety getting pinched the night before the game for solicitation didn't help.

I know that I'm in the minority but I enjoyed eps I, II, and III.  Not saying that they're masterpieces but I still watch them from time to time.

Nice to be 45 years old so that when I watch ROTJ, I'll end up having to go pee 2 or 3 times during the movie. That happens when Wicket is on screen.

Aww, come one. Ewoks are the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  8) Sure they were cute, but they eat humans and would have no problem knifing somebody in the back.  My biggest beef with the whole special editions was removing the "Yub Nub" song at the end. Of course, the ewok theorum comes into play here, cuz I'm in my 30's

yeah I mean sure, there are elements of the prequels that are entertaining.

Light Sabre Battles, some of the clone wars battles, but so much more unforgivable crap.

Stupid allegory for NASCAR and Drugs making it's way into the scripts, Midichlorians, Jake Lloyd, Jar Jar, horrible dialogue and unbelievable romance between Anakin and Padme, Every freaking shot CGI totally abandoning almost all practical effects, dumbing down to the point of almost no subtitles and giving the aliens ridiculous racist accents.....

The list goes on....

I was 9...I flipping LOVED the Ewoks...still don't hate em...but I see the point. That said, The best part of ROTJ is watching Ewoks take out AT-ST walkers.  :lol

Agreed.. I can't say I LOVED them, but I enjoyed the movie back then.  I might have even choked up a little when the one ewok didn't get back up..  It's really only in retrospect that I dislike them.  The original idea to be Wookies on Kashyyyk would have been cooler, but what the heck, it is what it is.  I haven't watched the remade version with the new Anakin at the end, I still have it on VHS in it's original format as well as after the first remake.

On the other hand, the prequels sucked.  I could forgive just about all of it except two things: horrible dialogue (almost unbearable to watch) and a complete departure from the "Official Lucasfilm Authorized" story line that was quite good.  I can understand minor deviations, but deciding to completely rewrite everything that has been published just because of his massive ego, even when his ideas were so clearly inferior.. that is what killed it for me.

You could say just two factors isn't too bad, but I enjoy movies for 3 reasons:
1) special effects.  Come on, it isn't the story that made Star Wars what it is today.  Back then the only way to see what Lucas' team did was to read a book and have a good dream about it.  Today, not so much, but I still see movies as much for the sights and sounds as for the story or anything else.
2) The story.  When it comes to sequels, it's all about bringing the elements back around to complete the story.
3) The acting and dialogue.  Face it, even a crappy subject can be great when the actor is good, the dialogue is engaging, and the director can put it together in a way that makes you FEEL.

You can have any one of them be crap if the others are good and still have a decent movie (or even a record breaker).  But when 2 out of 3 are complete crap, not even as good as a B movie at 2 am, even the best special effects in the world can't really make it worthwhile.  I saw Star Wars twice a week for two months when it came out in the theaters (had summer movie tickets and snuck in to Star Wars every time).  I saw the prequels once in the theater each.  I tried to watch each a second time at home, just couldn't make it through them without getting irritated at the awkward dialogue and terrible acting or at least falling asleep.  They just don't have too much in the way of redeeming factors.

1-3 were crap because... cgi.  Literally that's it.  The ONLY thing the Star Wars franchise EVER had going for it were great character designs and impressive special effects.  I-III couldn't even get that right.  Don't complain about the bad story and giant plot holes unless you complain about the original trilogy as well, because they had the same problems.

Seeing as how these new films seem to be cgi laden they are assuredly going to be crap as well.  Yes, yes I know JJ has assured us that he was going to rely on practical effects and yet.... look at that trailer.

The characters are as generic and cliché as you can get this time around.... disgruntled ex bad guy that will assuredly end up having a heart of gold, space junk scavenger and "wise old sage" that assures them that the legends are not just legends.  Oh and the bad guy is a vader fanboy who obsessively collects all things sith.  LOL Lucas wrote his fans into the script.

It's Star Wars and the plagues of Hollywood Lucas and Abrams are at the helm.  The only way it could be more doomed is if Michael Bay were somehow involved.  So expect utter crap and be pleasantly surprised if we get anything better than utter crap.

I'm not so fast to judge. While I didn't "hate" EP 1-3 they didn't come anywhere close to having the charm of the original trilogy. Plot holes included.

Bottom line, no matter how much I "didn't love" the prequels, there were a few redeeming moments in each that felt..."Star Wars". (most of the parts without Jar Jar and adolescent Anakin)

And those moments are worth being excited for this movie.

Animated effects can be ok(even CGI)...I loved the first two (original) Cartoon Network "Clone Wars" seasons. Those felt like Star Wars too.

A comment I read after watching the trailer:

"It's interesting that the next generation of people living in this universe don’t actually know what happened 30 years ago."

EDIT: Then again, I suppose you could say this is also true for kids playing on arcades today. ;)

Here is what I wrote on another forum

I'm less hyped as they leak more. This movie will print money, they didn't have to leak any of the plot or subtext or twists. Or anything! But omigosh, imagine day 2 numbers! Everything that we knew, what if it was a surprise. Ass holes if you ask me. Ruined it. I mean, I'll go, I'll eat popcorn, I might even enjoy myself. But it would have been so much better if they hadn't spoiled anything. This is boring hype. If afterwards, they hadn't leaked anything, that would have been hype.

Ass holes.

I actually don't think I am going to like this.

All things considered:
The new droid is a toy.
Black Stormtrooper, meh. Which Fet is that? Who cares now.
Women Stormtrooper? Must need the force to be a woman in combat. So she is force sensitive? What the hell, is that a thing? So she might be a jedi? or sith? Meh.

By Vader's Ghost! Is that a lightsaber with a lightsaber hilt? Blech

So...full disclosure. The thing I like least from the new trailers is lightsabers with lightsaber cross guards. (That is just trying too hard to be cool, and failing)

To me it doesn't fit.

Other than that I'm sure the story is corny and the acting will suck but I'm in it for blasters and space dogfights.

Um...I suppose their is one more thing. Am I the only one who thinks that a droid that has its head(CPU/sensors?) floating above its body is a bad design?

Edited for clarification

Other than crap that was caused by the prequels, the only criticism of the original trilogy that I view as fair is a sign of the times it was filmed during.

And that is the fact that Leia didn't attempt to transmit via email or whatever such media was available the plans to the Death Star. And the fact that she seems to have a short memory after watching her entire homeworld blown up.

Almost every other plot hole in the original trilogy is the fault of the prequels.

Meh, people can pick apart all the movies and ---smurfette---.  I get it.  I just enjoy them for what they are.  Saw the first one when I was 7 when it was released.  Hooked from the moment Darth Vader appeared on the screen.  None will when any acting/directing/writing awards but a good story even with holes is fine with me in the Star Wars universe.

The originals didn't just have good character designs, they also had good character arcs.  That's one reason the original series has held up, despite Lucas's repeated attempts to destroy it.

Episode I-III were completely lacking in the character department, which ruined those films far worse than CGI ever could.

Here here.

You genuinely felt for Luke.

You were so happy Han came around.

Leia, well she came with slave garb

I finally broke down and watched it last night.  It looks terrible.  I'm really apprehensive about this now.

I get a text from a friend yesterday asking which movie showtime on December 19th works better for me.
WTF?  This is actually that big of a deal to some people?
I guess that gives me time to watch the last 3 which I haven't seen.

Hell, I was flipping through channels a couple years ago and came across The Empire Strikes Back being played on network TV.
After a bit I realized that I had never seen it.   I just assumed I had as a kid because everyone has seen it.

Hoopz put me on the list of those who liked the prequels. I'll never get the disdain some people have for them, while not earth shattering they're still perfectly good films.

It's unrealistic to think you'll ever recapture the wonder of experiencing the originals, especially considering the age most of us saw them at.

The new trailers look great to me, I'm stoked for the release. Seems to be a grittier edge brought back back to the franchise and more of a balance between practical effects and CGI.

So...full disclosure. The thing I like least from the new trailers is lightsabers with lightsaber cross guards. (That is just trying too hard to be cool, and failing)

It's not cool. Suspension of disbelief...blown.

So the most unbelievable thing to you in the Star Wars universe is a lightsaber with cross guards?  Tauntaun's, AT-AT's and force powers sure, but man those cross guards take me right out of it, totally unbelievable. C'mon, seriously. :laugh2:
