Does it spray evenly, or does it splat the paint? I bought one years ago but was never happy with the spray. Of course, this was almost two decades ago, so I expect some improvement on the design.

Same here.

I have this cheap little Graco:

The texture looks good on my metal shed, but I wouldn't want my trim painted that way.
The paint goes on in little spit balls.  I kept thinning the paint and it just changed into runny spitballs.
I think one issue is that the air spraying the paint gets hotter and hotter the longer it's been running.
I sprayed epoxy paint through it to refinish a shower, but switched to a roller when I realized the paint was drying before hitting the wall.
(it wasn't sticking)

I used an old wagner. It splatted. My guess is design has improved a bit.

I have an HVLP turbine and sprayer for lacquer, but it wasn't too suitable for latex paints.  So I bought a Wagner with the turbine built in and with a little thinning with the right thinning agents for latex (floetrol) it shot very smoothly.  Takes some prep and setup though, so I still prefer airless for spraying latex.

With lacquer, I would use a catalyzed lacquer and an agent that would smooth it out nicely.  I could shoot a coat on whatever woodworking project I was on, and 20 minutes later hit it with some steel wool, then shoot another coat.  The second I would let cure for about 45 minutes, then another hit with 0000 steel wool, and the final coat and it was like glass.  You can handle it after a few hours, roughly handle it after about 24 hours, and 48 hours after the last coat it was rock hard.

I don't like messing with oil based paints because of the cleanup, but I imagine an oil based would shoot just as good as lacquer when using a decent HVLP sprayer.

Enjoying the 3d printer. After printing out a few premade objects, spending a long time calibrating and learning the ropes, I designed my first (very simple) arcade part. I made a plate to cover up a hole in one of my machines due to a removed bill validator.

Besides a few random experiences with modeling software in the past, 3d design is pretty new to me. I was happy to see that other than needing to ream out the bolt holes a tad, this was a perfect fit. I am using the stock filament, so I will just paint it instead of waiting to buy some black filament.

This is for a 10 cm X 13 cm bill validator hole, if anyone wants to download and use, the file is attached.

Looking nice Vigo.  I may have missed it somewhere, but what 3D printer did you go with?

Spent a little time Sunday afternoon to build a classic picnic table for my grand-daughters 6th birthday next weekend.  40" long, 24" tall, made with 5/4 cedar deck material.

My Projects:
MisSpent Youth a Vigolix bartop,  Little Bastard a rotating tablet/display bartop,
Pin-Dog a mini pin-cab on vpforums.org  Star Wars a wedgehead pincab on vpinball.com

They're predicting up to 15" of rain in Houston.  I was one block away from all the flooding last time around.  :/

Thanks, Borgdog! Love the Picnic table. Looks really well built! Here is to sunny weather at your grad-daughter's birthday.

For 3d printers, I went with a Da Vinci 1.0. For the price, I don't think you can find any printers, especially with a heat enclosure and an 8" bed for the price. The original model had some design flaws, and I heard they they fixed them a couple months ago, so I took a leap of faith on it, and have been happy so far. A $450 printer, and I was able to snag it from a Newegg sale for $350. It has gone on sale a couple times, you just need to look out for the sales. (still on sale for you impulse shoppers!)

The big downside of these printers is they force you to use their 1st party software and filament as a trade off for the low price. It is good quality filament, but they charge about $5-10 bucks more a pop. The silver lining is these are very hackable machines and can be modified to take open source firmware, software and ignore the propritary filament securities. I am waiting until I understand the basics a bit more before I make the jump to hacking it.

Changed the brakes on the wife's CRV this weekend, also replaced the crappy factory speakers with a nice set of Polks...  did some yardwork, hung out in the pool.  Good weekend.

I also had my eye on this one.  I came to the conclusion that the volume of stuff I made would be so small that paying an extra $5-10 for a roll of filament wasn't that big of a trade-off.
I haven't bought it because I don't think I'll have any free time to learn how to use it for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, I've also seen this come through on the NewEgg flyers several times, reviews kind of scared me off, but I'm not looking to buy anytime soon.  someday.  Look forward to seeing what you do with it Vigo.

The original models had flaky extruders, which was thankfully fixed on the 1.0a model that I have. They also redid their pcb board,  i think some chip was commonly cracked on the originals, I think those two issues drove a bunch of the negative reviews. Well, besides the proprietary filament thing.

The other major issue is leveling the bed is beyond confusing with their "calibrating utility". I put my machine so far out of calibration using it that i lost sleep trying staying up late and trying to fix it, only to make it worse each time. I didn't realize before getting the printer, but print quality relays heavily on an even bed. Once I learned to calibrate by just sliding a business card between the extruder and the bed as a spacing tool, my nightmare ended and prints started coming out perfectly.

Printing stuff from the internet is surprisingly easy. Just download from a site like thingiverse. Open it up in the slicer program and print. A few decisions you need to make on whether or not to make supports, how fast you want it to go and how fine of a print, but for the most part it is pretty straightforward unless you want to get crazy with the settings.

My biggest surprise right now is how much my wife has been into 3d printing the minute she saw it go. And she called me a dork for wanting one.  :lol My kids a very little but they love it, too. I made some playdoh cutters for my boys and they have been enjoying them like crazy. They like to just watch the 3d printer go. (Another BIG reason why I needed an enclosed 3d printer. Little fingers that like to grab anything that moves.)

I'm thinking of going the opposite route and buy/make a cnc machine.  I realized that most (not all) of the things I want to make are a little on the large side, so 3d printing doesn't make much sense.  Also I'm pretty sure once I get the hang of a cnc, I could cut an extruder bracket and the rig could do double duty.

Also on the 3d printing side of things, check this out:

http://hackaday.com/2015/06/10/astoundingly-great-60-3d-printer-called-chimera-bests-your-printer/

My guess is the things it prints tend to be a bit brittle due to the technique, but damn!

I got rained out just a few minutes ago.  I was building a metal brake for working with sheet metal and the heavens opened up.  Since I just swept the building I'll wait until another day.

Just do like Gameroom Designs Canada did, and turn your kitchen into the workshop. You'll be eating MDF sandwiches for the rest of your life, but, like bowties, it's cool.

I'll be continuing to fix up the house I got into about 6 months ago. Replacing light fixtures, repainting, repairing, all that kind of fun stuff.

Plus, I've now got a nice room I can dedicate to the buffet and my jukebox and steampunk the hell out of it  :afro:

So the other day I picked up a Pac-Man board I got in exchange for covering a buddy's meal and drinks at the Meet-Up last weekend. It's supposedly a Ms. Pac board, but it was missing the Ms. Pac daughtercard and the Sync Bus card. My plan is to burn the two graphic ROMS back to Pac-Man and I ordered a new Sync Bus card from TwistyWrist Arcade Parts. The parts I needed to make a Pac to JAMMA adaptor came in from Bob Roberts yesterday, so once I get home, it's soldering time!

I have two empty Midway cocktails. One is a Pac-Man, the other a Ms. Pac. The Ms. Pac is going to be turned into a Super Pac-Man (I bought a boardset from Smalltownguy2 and a set of control panels with original sticks off KLOV). I was originally going to MAME the Pac, but now I'm going to install the Pac-Man board in it. I also have a 6-Pac kit coming which allows me to play Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Pac-Man Plus in addition to the speed hacks for each. I'm finding much more satisfaction tinkering with original PCBs nowadays.

Able to make it out on a lake for the first time this year last weekend! Even though I live in the land of 10,000 lakes the weather's been crap. Also hoping to put up a quality shed in the back yard clear up some room in the garage.

Arcade projects in the works:
4player game pillar
Super Mario Strikers
Mini-pin
Atomiswave refurb, bought it for $100!

Think I'm getting close on finishing the Super Mario Strikers mini-cade, posting a build thread soon. Turning out well, Chuffed!

I found a local shop who does one off's and gave them the spec's to make it for me. Cost ~$100.

This is the one I was going to buy from you but decided to build myself since you were backlogged a little. Since I was doing it I figured I'd go all-in, I've wanted to try a metal CP for awhile. It has some of the parts you sent me in it, those magnetic latches rock.

Ya know what's Chufftastic about my summer?  NOTHING!  I'm away from my family on business and have a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- ton of time on my hands but nowhere to build any cabs.  Its super!   :applaud:  :P :timebomb:  I'm about two seconds away from ordering a kit.

Well, then this thread isn't for you ;)  Come back when you have something to chuff about ::)

So I built that brake today.  I think it still needs some tweaking, but it works pretty well as-is.  I started the "great work building cleanout of 2015"  hopefully it'll be done before 2016.  Also built a scrap wood cart for all my scraps so I can actually move them out of the way when I need to sweep or drop a pen behind them or something.  Also I found a lot of pens!   ;)

Do it.

Eh if I would have brought a camera with me it would be gummed up with a thin layer of sawdust by now.  Once I get a bigger chunk done and things are more clean-ish I'll take pics.

If you are talking about the brake, they are surprisingly easy to make.  Two pieces of angle iron, one mounted on the edge of a board with thumbscrews and one on a hinge... nothing to it really.

Originally, I was inquiring about the scrap wood cart.

Is it something like this?

Either way, I'd be curious to see pics of it.

Regarding the brake:  Are you going to use that for bending control panels?  If so, I'd enjoy knowing more about that too.

Nah Mine's just a simple box on casters.  I totally have cart envy now.  I'm not 100% done with it.  The plan was to do it like those lumber carts they have at lowes/home depot with the three rails.  I still need to put slightly taller walls on the side and that center rail.  I like that angled design in the vid though... I might have to modify things a bit.

The brake is more for misc projects, but yes I intend to use it with control panels.  I've been experimenting with hybrid panels, where you make a thin wooden sub-frame and skin it with super thin tin/metal.  If you laminate it via glue you'd be surprised how much it strengthens thinner plywood like 1/4 inch.  I'm still not 100% there yet, but the goal is to be able to get that metal control panel look and finish without having to out-source it to a machine shop.

I third the request for brake pics, I've been thinking of making one, scrap angle calling my name.

Problem with the scrap wood box is I have no where to put something that big.
