Gran Trak 2010
« on: June 29, 2013, 03:25:14 am »
So I have been planning on doing a driving cab for a while now but really procrastinating about starting it as the paint scheme just has too many possibilities.
I could not decide on a bat mobile scheme or a general lee theme or a kitt theme (even bought a larsen scanner) or British racing green etc.
But seeing as the shape is based on a gran track 10 I think that maybe it will have that kind of graphic but in white and red.
I always knew the shape I wanted and as I have almost run out of room and am a fan of the cabaret form factor this is the size chosen (its 59" high by 20.5" wide) with the intension being to sit at a barstool to play.
Also while we are at it the name was also a point of indecision is it Pythagoras steer-em or maybe even minni driver (I know), but really it has to be gran trak 2010 I think.
So with a week off work coming up it was decided that I will start it with the aim off getting to the point of the primer going on, then the plan is too take a long time over the final paint job.

I had already made the control panel from plexy and mounted the wheel, a not very expensive logitech but no I will not be fitting a shifter preferring to use the paddle shifters instead.
The plexi control panel offers some choices aswell from just spraying the underside to maybe printing a cpo and backlighting it or even having a marquee on the lower 45deg panel.
Also the foot pedals were chopped down as much as possible without breaking one of the pots.
Ive not gone for t-molding instead  choosing to use a roundover bit to make it a bit sleeker, this may well be a decision to regret come paint time.

As I plan to play some more modern titles I have gone for a decased 22" 16:10 screen that sits in a pocket to give about 2-3mm of bezel at the sides.
One other idea is to maybe put a wiimote or ps3 cam in for freetrack but that's undecided yet, but as I already have it set up on another box I will test it out before deciding - am thinking grid is the best testbed.
I do not have a spare pc at the moment so may dual boot one of the other cabs and using a dvi switch make this cab just a slave but yet again thats undecided.

So I guess that maybe the theme here is that I can build a cab a damn sight quicker than I can make decisions - maybe I was a bit premature in starting this one but hey i`m started now right?.
So next up is primer then my first experiments with hydro dipping some of the hardware.

One other thing I did this past week was make a table that my crappy old saw sits in then made a cross cut sled, and wow my productivity has increased!.

You did a fine job with the design of the cabinet  :applaud:

It's good to see that you are working the same as I do... In my head it's almost ready, and you can't wait to start on this thing.
You see that on all the fine details you made with this build.

Take time with your paintjob for the best result.

Keep an ye on it

I love cabarets. Having limited space allows one to have his cake and eat it too. I notice that you used plexi in this and the Tempest build for your CP. I'm looking to use this in my (future)build. What thickness would you recommend?

Thanks guys!.

Yeah I love the stuff, so for this one its 6mm but depending on if you are going to screw joys into it then 8 - 10mm is my suggestion you dont need big screws as you can bond your controls on with epoxy.

So today was my first foray into hydro dipping and man is it a PITA its like trying to work with algae and I had many failed attempts.
It remains to be seen how it looks dry and with a coat of clear so we shall see.
This is just one more of those things that look much easier on youtube than are in reality.
Anyway the coin door was stripped with synstrip then had a coat of clear then a dip - just hope it dries nice and flat.

So after lots of sanding its now time to think about making some stencils.
Luckily bristol has a strong street art heritage so I can buy some damn cool paint colours in rattle cans over the counter locally.
I am fairly happy with the outcome of the paint finish, but have to say the rounded over edges are easy to dink and are getting some marks but nothing that can not be fixed.
The coin door is not going to stay with its carbon dipped effect but is getting polished as best I can do as its not stainless.
Also the glass fits properly in its channel so the whole thing is slowly coming together :) .

Thanks - everything you could want to know about paint you can learn from the masters video`s found here.
But in essence I rollered on a water based primer - sanded it, then used two coats of This filler primer sanded again between coats, finally used three coats of auto paint wet sanding with 1500grit then 2500grit.

@TopJimmy  -  thanks, I just can not seem to get my method right, the film seems to not dissolve the way it does in the vids - water temp is fine so IDK?.
But yes it is a very cool treatment if you have it dialed, originally I was going to use this skull pattern on the build.

He he thanks - likewise,
So I am at a bit of a quandary now as to just get on with stenciling the livery or to clear it for protection then stencil on top and clear at the end?.
If I clear now  then that gives more time to procrastinate on design :) .
One thing I do have is This tape to cheat at pinstriping - also am thinking of getting an airbrush as I have always wanted one.
One other thing I forgot to say earlier was that even though the coin door was cleared it still gained some rust spots from the dipping - hence its removal >:( .
Have decided to spray the underside of the CP instead of using an overlay as it should have a nice glossy outcome as long as the paint adhears to the plexy ok (maybe scuff it a bit).
This is probably going to be the slowest build ever for me, but hey whats the rush right!.
Edit - meant to say that I also covet this paint effect..

You just had to know, didn't you. I was interested to find out whether you had some new and wonderful process, and lo and behold, you were using Ond's tried and true methods all along.

But in essence I rollered on a water based primer - sanded it, then used two coats of This filler primer sanded again between coats, finally used three coats of auto paint wet sanding with 1500grit then 2500grit.

Sweet deal. And dammit, yet another fantastic build I have to try and measure up to.

Will do :) ,
the only thing OND uses that I do not is swirlx I use This paint renovator - not because its better its just that I have some already.
The good thing about this stuff is it has no wax or silicone so can be painted over - in the shots above I have not yet applied it as I want the paint to cure a bit first.

Ok so I admit that I have been more than a bit indecisive about the final paint scheme mostly because no one ideal won over the others.
But finally I now know what I want, its just that its not got much to do with driving  :banghead: .
So basically I am going for a portal/oblivion white futuristic look - that just happens to have a steering wheel sticking out the front :dizzy: .
Anyway apologies to anyone offended but its what I want.

On a practical front the text and weyland logo are being lasered onto mylar for a stencil as we speak, and I also have some plastic dye on the way for the steering wheel.
The image below is just to give an idea of the colour scheme, and it may end up looking too NIB so may get some weathering to tone it down a bit
So what do you think like it or hate it?.

Still a bit of clean up to do on some bits of blow-out on the lettering but its coming along.

Thanks guys you are too kind!.
@Badmouth the plan is to sit on a barstool to play as I could not get the pedals low enough to not feel like you are standing on one leg due to the caster being in the way.
So now I need to make two decisions one is to either leave the sides nice and simple as is - or to fill the blank space above the text?.
The other is to leave the coin door polished or to paint it grey to match the sides?, any feedback is welcome.

I think it would look good with a simple old school indy car above the text.  I can see the image from some old racing game in my head, but can't for the life of me remember which game it is or find it online.  A simple outline might look good, either above the text or on the grey stripe.

I think black coin doors make it look more like a genuine arcade game.

That's just my $.02

Nah, it was a rip-off of the square on the side of a pole position cab but only had one car, which was red and slightly cartoony (like early shmup artwork).
I could be remembering a mobile phone game icon or who knows what else.  I wouldn't put much effort in trying to figure it out.
It might only exist in my head .

You may be onto something with a simple graphic on the grey line though, maybe a top down view of a car?.
Here is a shot showing a dry fit with the stripped coin door and painted CP, you also get a sense of scale next to my taito.
I promise some better quality shots when its a bit more deserving, still more paint corrections to do first.

This looks great, well done!

I would usually go with black coin door but I think it looks pretty good just polished.

How about a graphic something like the Super Sprint art...but maybe just one car:

Hi Minwah!.
Yeah still undecided on the graphic, had a look for a top down view of a car blueprint but as yet have not found anything that grabs me.
I made the attached vector from an image on the web but honestly am thinking less is more - however I now own a airbrush so may play with that for a bit then revisit the graphic once I know exactly what I am able to do with it.

What if you drop the car picture and use some burning rubber stripes?
Car logo is not in style of this beautiful cabinet

I think, when you taking a car picture , it's better suite to a dedicated theme
With the burning rubber stripes it gives you a better random look.
Play with it .. big rubber stripes on the side from top to bottom or diagonal ... lots of options .

Greetings

Still painting this, and well I think I may of got carried away as the back has had some detail added :) .
Yep I know no one will see it, so it can be our secret.
More little bits to touch up and a tad more sanding but its fun for me and thats what its all about eh?.
Loving not having t-molding on this and being able to paint around the edges too.

+1 for detailing the back of your cab. I've done the same, so if mine even looks half as nice, I'll consider it a job well done.

Awesome! The attention to details and the purity of the lines makes this really shine!

It does feel 'racing cab' to me.

Love the shape of the cab, and the level of detail and cleanness of the graphics - definitely on my project watch list / possible project emulation if my cabinetry skills ever get good enough

Well done  :applaud:

So I am happy to say the cabinet shell is finally painted, its taken longer than expected but the finishing line is in sight :) .
Here are a some shots...

The wheel has had some vinyl dye applied, hopefully its durable enough.

Could not resist a nitrous sticker sorry!.

Originally the plan was going to be to have this cab as a slave to my pincab and share the pc to save some cash, this however was not to be :banghead: .
Somehow I ended up upgrading the pin puter and rolling the old pc into this one, it should have more than enough beans to run most stuff - so much for money saving!.
Anyway the tray for the pc is fitted so really now its just a case of installing the software and deciding on a front end then some theme building.
One thing I forgot to do was to leave a window clear in the glass bezel for the head tracking cam, though I am sure that it will not be too hard to score an outline then scratch the paint away from the inside to the edges - will shall see.

Great job!   :applaud:  I really like the paint.  Once I finally finish my pinball cabinet, I'll be building a sit-down racing cab.  I already have a Fanatec CSR Elite setup... wheel, pedals, and shifter.  It was really expensive, but it'll be worth it.

Thanks everyone!.
So in true UK style after the bright sun those shots were taken in it started raining.
Anyway I quickly threw together a gameex install and a early draft of a theme just to get up and running and managed to get some PC titles installed along-side a mame install.
Thanks to romlister I have a skimmed set of about 130 driving roms, no CHDs as yet as I have not checked what ones are drivers - anyone?.
Tommorrow I get a second pair of hands to help move it, then its time for a final rebuild and its done!.

Thanks again guys,
So the FE and theme are not set yet and the chioce is between gameex, mala and hyperspin (in that order), as for themes I like  badmouths crazy taxi like one and have also seen this one and this one.

Lessons learnt are that a white paint job is very delicate and easy to dink (look at the grey next to the yellow weyland logo).
Originally I was thinking about ageing this a bit but to be honest its ageing itself quick enough from just being moved about my different work spaces.
The best lesson has been that airbrushes are AWSOME and its now up there with a hot glue gun in my favourite tools list.
To illustrate this the attached pic is from me filling in the "A" and "O" text and quickly it became clear the larger tape was redundant and I could easily keep within the smaller 5mm tape.
One other lessson is hydro dipping is hard!.
One idea that was dropped was to have a red and blue LED behind the pedals one for brake the other for the accelerator that gained brightness as it was depressed, but I think just a subtle blue on will be better.

Thanks to romlister I have a skimmed set of about 130 driving roms, no CHDs as yet as I have not checked what ones are drivers - anyone?.

California Speed & San Francisco Rush are the only ones I can think of that are fully working.
You'll probably find that the 360 degree wheel games don't play very well.
Here is a list of what is on my cab:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,130810.msg1339739.html#msg1339739

I'll add to that Cannonball for Outrun.  It adds force feedback, higher framerate, fixes glitches in the original, etc, etc, etc.
https://github.com/djyt/cannonball/wiki

The biggest thing is to fix the joystick deadzone in mame.ini
The default setting is .3 which means you have a 30% dead zone!  :lol
More setup tips are in the driving cab info thread stickied in the driving cab forum.

Since so many different emulators are used on a driving cab, it's nice to have all the games in one list if it can be done with your front-end.
A tutorial for Mala is on my to-do list, but I don't know when I'll get around to it.  It's all covered in SGT's workaround thread in the Mala subforum, but a few key bits of info are buried in the middle.

Sweet thanks for the info :) .
Luckily I have most of the other emu`s already set up on other cabs so a lot of work is already done, gameex makes it very easy to add games to a favourites list and I already have a cross emu hyperspin xml that someone else spent a lot of time on.
As for mala in the past i have just created a shortcut for each game and had one big list - think I will play around with both gameex and hyperspin in the cab and choose a fav.

So once It had been decided a driving cab was to be built one of the first things purchased was a larson scannerà la KITT, and I was damned if it was not going to be used! :) .

This is such a sharp build and the amount of custom touches ties it together while really elevating the quality to the next level.  Would have liked to see some kind of dash detail around the wheel but overall it's super sharp.  Great build!

Wow thanks - praise indeed, although yourself, Ond and quizz-kid are far more deserving of that accolade I think :) .
I am not too worried about the dash area, I often fell less is more and would rather add more detail to a project later if it seems to need it - this however is just not possible with the dash being reverse painted on the inside.
I do though feel the screen bezel is a bit plain so am working on a graphic right now.
As it stands the button layout on the wheel is a bit ambiguous so the decal will illustrate the mapping for guests.
Must really stop playing the thing for a bit so that some more thought can go into themes.

Could not resist - just bought a G25!, so the cab will get pulled apart one more time.
Looks like the shifter and pedals decase well to fit the CP, still only room for two pedals though - need to do some thinking.

So I decided to step away from this for a bit and also to hand over the frontend skinning to the capable mike boss.
Mike has done some great work for me in the past so it was a no brainer to farm this out to him while I got on with other stuff.
Sure its nice to do everything yourself but sometimes if you know someone else`s vision of what you want maywell be better than your own then I think its ok.
I now have the front end up and running and all my games starting from shortcuts in one big list via mala - so mala won the FE dilemma.
Its now just a case of redoing the CP with a new (G25) wheel and we are back in business.
I have moved the wheel over a bit to make room for a gear stick but have not yet decided if I will use it as it will be a bit cramped - we will see.

Next week, I'll be starting a step by step tutorial for setting up each emulator for a driving cab and incorporating it all into one Mala list.  ;)
Starting with a fresh Windows 7 install and downloading all the emulators from scratch so I don't miss covering anything.
Look for it to be stickied in the driving cab forum.  It may also be locked, so it doesn't get cluttered with questions.

As most of the last odds and ends are now done on this its probably time for an update.
So the new wheel is in and has gained a vinyl dye treatment just like the old one.
After giving the old wheel`s coating some hard testing I am now fully confident in the dye and not a little surprised also.
The pedals were reverse mounted and for me at 6ft feel much better at that angle as before I was often hitting the speaker cover with my knee.
At the moment the cab has no shifter as I think it will maybe be a bit crowded with one fitted - this may change later though if it is missed.
A template is already made and I have test fitted the sticks mount so fitting this later would be a trivial matter and I could even keep the dial.
As this wheel has its buttons separate I needed to break out its encoder and extend the buttons onto my control panel - fiddly soldering but easy enough.

Heat build up was a bit unexpected so the back gained a 200mm fan and temps now are fine.
The only other thing of note is that freetrack is now installed and working using a PS3 eyecam fitted behind the upper bezel mounted using that under rated all purpose engineering solution known as hot glue.
Speaking of the bezel I am not that happy with my artwork so will redo that and also maybe make a feature of the eyecams window to tidy it up a bit.
I also ended up simplifying mikes mala layout a bit (sorry mike).

So apart from some little jobs for all intents and purposes I am now calling this one done, time for some F1 2013!.

Is that a camera in the monitor bezel?

I saw the option in some PC games I set up, but never considered it for my cabs.

One question:   Those peddles are Really high up.  Honestly, isnt it a bit odd to try to reach them way up there?  Are you just keeping your foot off the floor at all times?   Usually cabs have a platform that at very least, you can rest your heel on, to act as the pivot point.

The other qips are mere personal opinions:

 - I think the glass would look better following the angle of the monitor
 - The camera sticks out loudly... would have been better hidden under a black stripe.
 - I think the cab top should be bull-nosed.  And or make an actual slim marquee thats about the same size as the bezel top.
 - Finally, I prefer stick shifters for most games, especially classics.  Its an expensive route, but would be a great addition to have.
 - Hmm, one more... Without going back to see where the speakers are? ..   Id put them under that slim marquee I mentioned, facing downwards.  Stereo.  With a sub in the bottom... and bass shaker near the Control Panel.

Hi guys and thanks for all the feedback especially Xiaou2 for the critique this is after all a forum.
So yep Badmouth the cam is the PS3 eyecam for free track - the jury is still out on how much use the headtracking will get.
I have used freetrack for a while on my desktop and with multi monitors its great - in a cab with this small form factor its nice to have but I think it will get used less and less.
One thing I have noticed is that some games that work flawlessly with a wiimote do not with the PS3 eye, but I have not had much time to troubleshoot lately and freetrack development seems dead.

Xiaou2 don't worry I am not at all offended by your opinions, but will address a couple of points,
Firstly the peddles are high because its a cabaret and I did not plan to stand at it, and honestly I could not get the peddles any lower as the caster is in the way as mentioned earlier plus if I brought the peddles forward to lower them then they would be behind the seated player.
The stick shift is still a possibility as I have already worked out its mounting but will only be used if I really miss it as CP space is an issue.
As for the cam being a tad conspicuous I agree and if it gets to the point where freetrack is hardly used then its just a quick spray of white paint and it will be like it never happened.

Anyway here is a picture to illustrate the ergonomics of the cab, with the face covered to protect the innocent (me) :D .

the stig helmet is a simpson bandit if you want to get authentic.  I see a business of getting a white driving suit and helmet to rent out to all the driving cab/TWIP guys so they can take a pic of the Stig playing their rig.

;D
Yeah or just run a team of stig-a-likes to make guest appearances, just think it would be the easiest job around.
Does not matter what they look like and they would not even say one word, of course you would need the obligatory dwarf (little person?) stig - the Stiglet.

Is it bad that I had to go to Wikipedia to figure out what "The Stig" was supposed to reference?

So I figure then, while I play it, I'll wear a white jumpsuit and helmet, and that'll square us up.

:D
