Ok.  Stay with me on this one.  Changing the head on R2D2 would almost like itself to this video. You could almost mount a small amplifier or sound control into R2's head with the volume itself sticking out to make it look like one of R2's knobs.  Or somehow do this inside the body having all that empty space.  Hope that makes sense.  Also sorry for being "that guy" but how do you plan on routing the wires from the actual play buttons without everything sticking out and looking like a mess.  Something tells me that  you already have that in mind.

What empty space are you refering to in the body?  I've got a computer, power supply, surge protector, KVM switch, 2.1 sound, encoder, fans, projector, and about a mile of cable management problems stuffed into this sucker.   ;D Cables from the CP will run into R2 via CAT5e keystone jacks.  Wires from the CP components will no be visible at any point.  The cables themselves I plan on covering in the same type of hose fitting used on R2's feet for continuity.  Ditto the slave cable that will run to the speeder when it is in use in conjunction with R2 (it will be stand alone capable for SW Racer).

I also have to so some vibration dampening between the PJ in the dome and the base of the build that the CP attaches to... and figure out where to stick that pesky volume control lol.

Saw this on hack-a-day this morning. Person shoved a raspberry pi and pico projector into an R2D2 shaped cake. If it can fit in a cake, it can fit in this project!

R2Emu is coming together! Figure I'd lead with pics this time.  Not done yet but real happy with where I'm at.  Minor touchup needed here and there, need to shave off a few fuzzies, and I have some more work to do on the back door panel but it's coming along nicely.  Once this coat is hardened in a few days I'll be able to tape off two do the two rings around the top where the body meets the dome - I need a silver and blue one, both 1 inch wide.  Not shown are two more silver panels for the bottom, one for each side - they'll go on later as they need an undercoat of blue to lay on. I'll also paint the keystones on the bottom silver so they blend. The blank on the right is getting a switch to power the unit.  Hard to see in these pics but the slot load drive is installed in the data port.  Still need to install the PC, sub, power, kvm, and wire the internals but I've already test fit all that and will get to it once everything is dry and safe to handle more than it is now.  Dome is next, then CP last.  Dome is getting a complete refurb but won't take as long as the body did for sure. Not long now and he'll be playable.

Thaks guys, I appreciate the compliments.

At this point it's really good looking from 10feet but has some rough edges at the 2feet vantage point.  I'm working those wrinkles out tho - doing a bit of polishing myself  ;)  I don't have any plans to add a pico for the holoprojectors at this time.  I have a 1600 lumen PJ that's going in the head to shine out of the Radar Eye (main eye hole) but I will likely upgrade to a more powerful/versatile projector before all is said and done.

Hey Vigo, from time to time I think I'm an R5 unit myself  ;D

I'll just chalk that up to the building seeing all the imperfections.  Your R2 looks fantastic to me--no carbon build up.   ;D

The colors really pop compared to other R2's I've seen.  Impressive, most impressive.   :applaud:

Got the dome stripes painted and getting ready to affix the last of the body panels.  Also trying to get all the internals arranged today.  Baring any setbacks I'll be able to start on the dome this weekend as well.  I'll try and get some pics up later today once I have things plugged into other things.  Need to do a ton of cable management.

Components installed. Used the HDMI out on the back panel to watch a movie yesterday ;) Glorious. The wiring won't win any awards but it's neat enough. I took the KVM switch out because I may have borked it by accident and don't need it until the speeder is ready but all the connections work and I've got plenty of time to iron that bug out. R2 is looking good and I'm getting started on the Dome tonight.

omg Omg OMG! I'm stealing the term 'nerd-boner'! A-FRIGGIN'-MAZING! If u posted that you'd fooled us all, that you'd somehow gotten an original R2 from George & doctored it a little to make it look just a teensy bit different, I'd believe it.  :applaud:  :applaud:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Thanks guys, it's always fun once a project starts coming together and looks like it did in one's head. Glad to hear you all like it as much as me. Most of my projects my wife asks, "are you going to sell that?" but on this one she said, "You aren't going to sell that are you?". For those that speak Wife you know what I'm sayin here. :))

Ripped the dome down, epoxied it to the base, made a relief cut to secure a better fit, and plugged the holes. Painting today.

In the pics you can see the fit of the dome to the body now, looks much more like one piece.  Once painted it should be near seamless.

Obviously three. Don't forget to mount the trackball really close to the base of one.
