Its good, really.

Usually the screenies on IGN look better than gameplay but in this case the game is far better.

I will say this, a large HDTV is prob a requirement....

I will say this, a large HGTV is prob a requirement....

Someone's been watching some home and garden channel huh?  Looking to add some shrubbery around the backyard patio?  A nice shrubbery I hope, and one thats not too expensive.....

Which reminds me of this great scene......

Runaway!  Runaway!

Yea OK I'm a bit tired and delusional....I got the blue screen of death on my mame pc tonight and have been trying to figure a way around reinstalling windows.  I have mame and most other emulators all backed up but there is some other software on there and I remember I had all kinds of driver issues when I first tried getting Maximus Arcade to work properly the first time.  I dont want to go through that again.  ---smurfing--- windows.

Oh yea, and the Xbox pinball looks pretty cool, although I dont like all that moving around but I assume you could turn that feature off.  Looks better than VP anyway.

Did I really type HGTV......Saint did that to me I bet :-) Oh well I fixed it.

I get a chair from my office & sit so close to a 60" to the point my feet rest sideways on the TV stand & play that game.

Its epic, really cool.

I can talk to my brother about your windows drama this weekend, Chuck has probs with one of his machines & my bro pulled all the good stuff from his HD to mine for preservation purposes

I always wished these games had a full screen vertical rotated view, for use as a virtual pin or the like.  The physics feel better to me than they do on VPin and Future Pinball.

I asked about this at E3 and Crave told me that they hadn't considered that people may do that with the product. I told them that it's a pretty common thing and they had one of the developers ask me exactly what I was getting at. They then said that they'd consider patching that functionality in down the line if there's truly enough buzz about it.

I have got this for my XBOX360 and it looks very good and plays pretty good too.  Now if they would only make a Pinball Hall of Fame Bally's Collection with Theatre of Magic and Adams Family which are two of my all time favorite pins.

Don't expect to see stuff like Addams Family due to licensing issues. I'm sure Indiana Jones would have made the cut in this collection, but licenses on that stuff didn't extend beyond the initial run of games.

It would be great if there was someone to contact to express interest. I can think of at least a couple hundred people that would buy this game soley because it offered full screen vertical view.

I have this on PSP (10 tables) and on PS2 (8 tables).  The 360 and PS3 version has 13 tables so I want it.  Not to mention the high quality visuals.  I'm getting a 360 in a couple of weeks and this will be my first game for it.

Assuming the game play and physics remains the same as the PSP and PS2 versions, it will be a GREAT game.  On a side note, you asking about vertical control.  The PSP version DOES allow you to rotate the screen 90' but the control is pretty horrible holding your PSP sideways. :X

I've been playing the game for the last week.  Very fun and addicting.  Visuals are really good.
Rotating display would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath for an update.  One of the neatest parts of the game is the option that teaches you how to play the tables to get the bonuses (step by step).  Makes a pin much more enjoysable if you know what to do  :dizzy:   Must buy for any pinhead.

I really wish that pinball hadn't died in most places, cause I'd love to take my PSP with The Williams Collection and see how the game and the real deal tables compare in a side by side comparison.

I suspect someone is cheating at this game.  I was looking at the leader boards, happy with my 335th place on them with Taxi.  (I'm no wizard, but I think that means I'm decent.

I scrolled to the TOP of the Taxi leader boards and found an interesting jump between third and second place.

#3 is 34 million points.
#2 is 48 million points.
#1 is 1.99 billion points.  Billion, with a B.

Okay, I do have to admit one thing.  Apparently being part of the 'Recreational' zone I only see leader boards of other people in my zone.

So it is entirely possible that there are people WAY more skilled in the other 3 (Or is it 4) zones that catagorize players and his score is in tune with them.  But I'm just highly suspicious as his score is just so absurdly high in comparison to #2 and #3.

Taxi also, in my experience isn't one of those tables where, once you start scoring big, you score insanely big.  Not like say Medieval Madness where once you start scoring some good stuff, the game basicly pays off like a slot machine.  Hell my highest score in MM is 48 million, but the highest bonus for knocking down the last castle is 50 million on it's own.  But Taxi is a fair bit older and not really like that.

So I have all 13 tables unlocked and all are unlocked to freeplay mode.  They really shoulda figured out more use for this token system, cause I have 580+ tokens now and I keep getting more, but there's nothing they're good for now! @_@

200 of said tokens alone come from a 14hr non-stop stint of PHOF running at an anime convention gaming room.

It'd be great if they would also patch in a way to map the controls.

Launching the ball with the analog stick makes it useless in my 360 cab, which is honestly the only way I will ever play it. :(

I dunno. These kinds of games are just far more likely to be played by me in the arcade environment. Something about sitting on the sofa playing pinball has just never worked for me.

Unless your cab has an accelerometer setup, it'd be tricky to effectively impliment the nudge done by the left analog stick on a cab I think.

 :dunno

I don't ever nudge or bump pinball tables anyway.

It may keep me from ever reaching greatness, but it is just something I never utilize.

So, pinball, with true arcade feel... With an upright video game cab and no ability to nudge?  That's hardly 'arcade' in reguards to 'pinball'. :P

I don't nudge real tables either. :P

It is still far more arcade than sitting on my sofa with a regular gamepad in my hand though. My kids and I all around the cab taking our turns is far more satisfying.

Whatever though. Williams is unplayable that way, and I was just voicing that it would be great if it was. I have too many other games that occupy my sofa time. ;D

I don't know if you consider this cheating, but once you complete the Wizard level table goals, you unlock the option to turn off Tilt.  These scores still count on the leaderboards.  On the developer's Facebook page, they said they considered not letting these scores count, but figured that it takes a lot of skill to unlock the option and the player should be rewarded by letting their scores count.  I wish they had separate leaderboards myself.

As for the game itself, I love it.  I'm disappointed I didn't realize how cool pinball machines were back in the day and just ignored them most of the time.  I did play them now and again, but not enough to know about lane changing, how to obtain the multipliers and multi-balls, etc.  I thought it was just random reaction timing with pinball.  A major missed opportunity on my part.

I hope there a lot more releases like this, I'll be snagging them up.

Hopefully there are downloads in the future.... maybe AFM, IJ, WW or a few more oldies.

I doubt it tho because the game has a few glitches that makes me think they decided to just release it & let it be. The sound has some cracks or scratches inbetween bytes, the "tips" only flash for 0.75 seconds during a load, you cant page up or go to the top of the leaderboards & blah blah blah.

Its still cool though.

Yeah, that "tips" thing drives me nuts.  It's be nice to be able to read them.  I think it's because this is an update of the previous Xbox game where loading times were longer.  They upped the graphics and added 3 tables, and didn't worry about the little presentation stuff.  Just a guess on my part though.

I did hear that Monster Mash almost made it into this game, but licensing wasn't done fast enough.  I have a feeling we'll be seeing that one in DLC.

The only Williams table I'm familiar with is High Speed, so I'd like to see that someday.

PHOF has had table additions with each release.  The PS2 port featured only 8 tables, the Wii/PSP port featured 10 tables and now 360 and PS3 are featuring 13 tables.  Clearly they have the means to get more tables and include them and now they are on platforms that offer DLC options.  The game has been successful enough, even as a value title to get re-releases so they could work on some DLC to offer up additional tables.  At $39.99 it only costs $3.08 per table in the game.  Meanwhile they could bring in $5 per additional table as DLC.  It certianly seems possible.

I actually emailed Farsight studios, just to report a couple of bugs.  One being the VGA aspect ratio issue and also that the ingame 'turn off vibration' option does... Squat.  It doesn't turn off the vibration, you have to do it in the Dashboard instead.  I said I loved the game and we used it for public gaming events and I asked if they hat intentions on doing DLC.  The PRESIDENT of the company responded to me, said that  MS offers litte support or info with the VGA cable to devs and admitted they didn't test it, he also said they'd look into the bugs if they issued a patch.  Strangely he didn't mention a word on DLC.  If they had no intentions of DLC, you'd think he'd deny it?  So they could be looking into it.

But I have to admit, the game has some weaknesses.  One being that they didn't work on the table lighting for the PS3/360 ports.  The light shows come off as pretty lackluster on tables like Medieval madness.

If anyone is interested also, I sent them a fan letter over the PSP port over a year ago, even appologising for pirating it because no store in Canada carried it, not even Amazon.ca, but said we did buy two ligit copies from Amazon.com of the PS2 port for gaming events.  On the topic of additional tables then, the VP of Farsight said the following:

Quote
Thank you very much for your email.  Weíll definitely be working on more pinball titles.  Nothing has been announced, so I canít say what weíre working on right now.

Hopefully, there will be another full collection or two as well.  Iím sorry our publisher isnít distributing the game very strongly north of the border as of yet.

FYI, Stern continues to design and make really nice tables, but Mr. Stern is opposed to licensing us his tables because he believes we dilute the coin-op market.

This is from July 2008, but it's apparent that they are looking into options beyond Williams and maybe entire new collections.  Which, agian, with DLC in the modern age, we might just see expansion of Williams tables? :)  With the Williams lisence, they should have permission to use Bally tables too.  Maybe we'll see Pinball Hall Of Fame: The Bally Collection?

Oh, I can see it now - MS will somehow piss off the developer with their certification process and the PS3 will be the only way to get DLC, which will force me to repurchase the game since I bought it for my 360.

That's cool that you got a reply from the developer.  I might try an e-mail myself.  Anything to let them know this game has a decent following.

Email Farsight Studios, not Crave, since Crave just published it.  postmaster@farsightstudios.com seems to get you somewhere, I got a respones from the president the other week after emailing that address.

Press them on the DLC topic, tell'em you'd pay good money for some Attack From Mars. :D

Well, the PSP version has rotation but it sucks.  Control sucks sideways, the game doens't remember your camera settings so it's not at the right topdown view and also it returns to normal display once you exit the pinball table.  So all menus are done right ways, only the table is rotated.

While I couldn't play on the small PSP screen, those are some nice screenshots.  I'm amazed at far we've come.  I remember when I wanted a Sega Game Gear and how amazing I thought the graphics were.

My kids gave me this game (for the Xbox) over the holidays. Here's my quick thoughts. By the way, I've played all the games for real (including the EM).

  • The graphics are great but require a large HD display to read the actual playfield text.
  • Sound is dead on perfect.
  • Ball dynamics are the best of any virtual pin software I've played, but still nowhere close to the real thing.
  • There's no mode to allow you to manually scroll around the playfield. I don't see why this was omitted? Unless Iím missing it somehow?
  • The games are just too easy or too hard. For example, Black Night (a difficult game to master in real life) is ridiculously easy. Pinbot (easy in real life) is very hard. In general, most of the games are too easy. But that's the problem with virtual pinball - no matter how good the simulated ball dynamics are, you still have a very limited set of vectors.
Robots will kill you.

True, BK is a multiball tramp.

I like it a lot tho, there is something to be said for the personal objective of maintaining 3 ball @ all times to feel successful.

EDIT: I repeated myself, repeat I repeated myself

I was thinking the same thing about BK.  Granted it has been 20+ years since I played BK but I don't recall playing it nearly as long on one credit as I can on Williams HOF (Wii version).
The graphics are great but require a large HD display to read the actual playfield text.

Yeah I ended up picking up a component cable for my Wii just for this game.  I could not read the playfield at all.

Say what you will, I missed all of these tables in the arcade so I'm happy to be able to play them this way.  Have any of you picked up the Gottlieb Collection for the Wii?  I think it's released everywhere the 19th, but it's been available at Best Buy since December.  I don't have a Wii so no dice for me.  Hope they port it over to 360.

Heard bad things about the Gottlieb collection. They are still using the crappy engine from the PS2/Gamecube version instead of the superior Williams engine. Videos I watched had a very slow and "floaty" ball.

For $20, though, I might just pick it up anyway. :lol

I noticed that as well and thought it was weird.  Amazon says it will be released on the 19th but Best Buy had it before Christmas. I'm going to pick it up as soon as I get bored with the Williams Collection.

Having played The Gottlieb Collection on Xbox1 and PSP, it's really lacking.  The physics arn't quite right but most importantly the camera system isn't that hot.  It seems that Farsight perfected the camera for The Williams Collection however when re-releasing The Gottleib Collection they never retroactively improved the cameras or anything that made Williams superior.

I also find the table selection to be boring, but that's just personal taste.

Well that's not encouraging to hear, that game is a few years old, you'd think they had plenty of time to touch it up, instead of just porting it the way it was.  If they ever think of doing it for 360/PS3, I'll have to wait for reviews I guess.

Since Gottlieb collection already existed for Gamecube, and Wii hardware is the same as Gamecube (if you don't consider the wireless, remotes and networking stuff) it sounds like they just did a straight port.

The hardware is definitely NOT the same, and it's not a straight port. I interviewed the devs of the game at E3 while I sat there and played it. It's better on the Wii, just not the same jump the Williams collection got moving over to the 360 and PS3.

The Williams Collection was given a significantly higher development budget by the publisher.

What I certianly hope is that this franchise continues.  While Zen Pinball, Pinball FX, Slamit Pinball have superior graphics, the gameplay in The Williams Collection is the best.  They didn't need help building the tables, they were able to pluck tried designs and just replicate them in 3D.  For other virtual pinball the original table designs just arn't from actual pinball engineers.  Sure, maybe that's 'cheating' as it means Farsight only had to lisence the designs and then replicate them but it's absolutely the most fun.

Is anyone excited about this from the developer of PHOF:
http://www.pinballarcade.com/
They've got licenses for Stern, Bally, Gottlieb, and Williams tables.
And it's going to be released on every system out there (iOS first- sometime this month)- including a special PC version which may eventually include setup for multiple monitors for those with virtual pin cabinets!
The first four tables released are Theatre of Magic, Tales of the Arabian Knights, Ripley's Believe It Or Not and Black Hole, with more releases planned as DLC each month.
And in an interview with the developer they've even hinted at releasing The Adams Family:
http://www.gamezone.com/editorials/the-pinball-arcade-interview
With updated graphics and revamped physics, this is going to be the best pin sim to date.
It even looks amazing on iphone 4:

The auto-camera move on that makes me "see-sick".

And Ripleys?  Thats one of Sterns biggest Duds.

TOM and Tales are awesome however.

Id still love to see MS re-start their Pinball digitization efforts like their original package.

I don't know how many of you are following The Pinball Arcade, but Farsight just released a new video of their next two DLC tables:  Medieval Madness and Bride of Pinbot.  The castle destruction is much improved over the Williams Collection version and the lighting looks better too.  I'm assuming the video is of the console versions.  I can't wait for the 360 version to come out, supposedly at the end of this month.

I really hope this takes off on 360 and PS3, I know I'll be supporting it, already have every table but one on Pinball FX2 on 360. The $3.00 price point per table or $10.00 for four tables is really easy to handle. As far as my favorite few real tables (especially GnR, TZ and Attack From Mars) I'd probably pay $5.00 a table easily, maybe more, depending on how good they actually are :)

For completely legal, professionally produced tables, specifically made for multiple monitor pinball cabinets, I would easily pay $20 a table and pick up 5 or six of them to start and another every month or so after that.

It's too small on an iPhone, but pretty good on an ipad. It pisses me off that they try to trick you into purchasing a table. And $3.99 for one table is too much.

I have high hopes for this getting into my cab for two reasons.  First, the game will be available on the Xbox 360.  Porting a game from Xbox 360 to PC is almost as easy as remapping the buttons.  Second, the games already play in vertical mode on the iPhone/iPad.  I would think the two things could come together without too much effort.  Maybe we should start a petition or something.

I sat down and played some Pinball FX 2 last night.  I've got real mixed feelings about the whole thing.  While the tables are fairly imaginative and there are a lot of neat graphics, I'm still not sold on the idea of a virtual pinball cabinet being anything more than a novelty.  As a replacement for an actual cabinet, it falls flat.  As a video game, it's boring.

I like the way it feels, but some of the tables are overdone with character animations, etc. Excalibur and Nightmare Mansion are a couple that feel like they could actually exist. I liked Captain America for just outright playability.

I've been playing the iPad version of FX2 (Zen Pinball) along with Pinball Arcade, and even though you're playing in a much smaller format, rotating and being able to see the entire playfield without a weird angle really makes the games feel better.

What view do you play with on FX2? I play all the tables in view 6.

I play them using a couple different views depending on the table... I'm thinking 1 wide or 2 for most of them?
I'll check next time I play it. I usually just hit the button until it shows what I want without paying attention to the number.

I don't like when the camera follows the ball and scrolls portions of the playfield off the screen.
