Other Countries' Arcades
« on: September 08, 2009, 05:30:01 pm »
Most of us are very familiar with the arcade games from North America and Japan.

I'm curious- are there many unique arcade games that belong to other countries?

I don't mean the Italian version of Dig Dug, or the Australian version of Pac Man.  I mean dedicated games that are unique to other parts of the world besides North America and Japan.

Post pics and/or descriptions of the games, if you know of any.

Don't think this happened much with arcade games back in the day, except for some strange poker games, classic game clones or bootlegs and some weird Russian crap from before the iron curtain came down.

This is the site of a Russian arcade museum that specializes in Soviet era games. Really neat stuff.

I like all the Japanese contraptions that never get exported.  Sega made a NAOMI based game where you had to walk a virtual dog while you walked on a treadmill. XD

Not the same thing at all. Tetris was designed with a totally different premise in mind....it just happened to become an arcade game...if you call that an arcade game, which I don't really think of puzzle games like this to be arcade games.

Do they actually have a Daytona USA cab in North Korea?   :dizzy:

Here's one I've never seen before- Taiko No Tatsujin:

Mystic Man appears to be Pac Man, but I'm not sure why they would change the name.  And...the control panel looks sideways from this angle!  This is from a Danish arcade:

Another one I've never heard of- Zunzun Block.

And another- Universal Magical Spot.

That Mystic Man is actually Ms Pac-Man. It might be some sort of multigame since it has 4 buttons (you only need 2 start buttons for Ms Pac).

Heh, well some games are best left in Japan. For example:

Boong-Ga Boong-Ga (Japanese: 浣腸ゲームkanchō geemu), also known as Spank 'em, is an arcade game developed by South Korean company Taff System. It is the first arcade game to simulate kancho, a children's prank popular in Japan where the victim is poked with two fingers in the anal region whilst distracted.

The game also dispenses cards that rates players on their "sexual behavior", and for players who perform exceptionally well the machine will dispense a small plastic trophy in the shape of a pile of feces.

omg.. i remember seeing a picture of that machine before but had no idea what the actual goal of the game was..

a childrens prank to poke someone in the butt with 2 fingers? sounds like sexual assault in the states, but ya know what they say about sexual assault in japan.

I think the North Korea arcade is still better than the state of many arcades left in America though  :'(

The Taiko drum game is actually pretty fun to play. My wife and I played it a bunch on our last trip to Japan. There was some weird feature at the end of the games, where you could snap a photo of the barcode on the screen with your cell phone. I think it was some sort of save feature, but the screen came and went to quickly for me to understand.

We also played this 'whack a mole' style game, where you hit the screen with a soft hammer to banish ghosts. It was fun, but it had a lot of written dialogue in the game play and I don't read japanese very quickly.

We didn't spend a lot of time at the arcades last time because we were so busy seeing all the sights. But our next vacation there in February is more low-key and I think we'll get more time to play games. I'm planning to snap some photos of the different cabinets for inspiration on building another arcade machine. It's research, see?
