Are tokens tokens?
« on: July 27, 2009, 11:53:14 am »
Are tokens tokens or are their different types within the arcade arena?

I saw some on ebay from some casino and was wondering if they were usable with a machine that was set up to take tokens.

Thanks!

if this is your personal cabinet that is set up for tokens, you can probably modify the coin mech so that it will work with just about anything.    my coin mechs activate with tokens, quarters, nickels, steel washers, just about anything flat, thin and round between the size of a nickel and a quarter. pennies occasionally work, but often slip past the switch without activating it

FWIW, some tokens were grooved, and the coin insert slot modified so normal coins & (other arcade's) tokens don't fit.  I'm thinking of the three grooves on one half of each side tokens; this made the tokens could fit in the slot in two orientations, and a pain if you had to get a new coin in to continue a game.  Can't find any picture on-line, the places that used them are either out of business or gone to "electronic token" cards.

But yeah, most tokens were 0.984", but there was a range of sizes, and of weight due to different materials.  And since arcades didn't want you use use other arcade's tokens on their machines, and to use fake tokens, the coin mechs are designed to accept one size and weight.  So hack the coin mech to use any size/weight as mentioned above.

Many car wash/jet wash machines still use this type of grooved token in the UK to avoid the need for reprogramming a machine when prices change - they are issued at a counter instead.

I found many arcae tokens in the UK were also interchangable, though coin mechs were usually identical on most machines anyway, and I only ever saw them on standard fruit machines in regular arcades and pubs as a way to rip you off when you won the jackpot (All wins over £3 paid in tokens - remember that sticker everywhere?) but now I haven't seen them in years, even in casinos. In all fairness I NEVER saw tokens used in video arcade games over here, so I dunno how many UK home builders now try to add this feature to their cabs?

I have seen some of these I think they have like 3 or 4 ridges on the bottom side  at angles kinda didnt know what they were for though.

Around here just about all the arcades used tokens I think they went that route to cut down on theft from the coin box and from attendants. With funds going in to secure points of sale like registers with cameras or change machines they had better control.

Also with tokens you could run campaigns like 5 tokens for $1 and 60 for $10 to get folks to spend the whole bill cause token were no good out of the arcade they would have to.

Fun Factory not too far from me had slotted tokens. The tokens were a silver color with 3 grooves on each side of it. The coin slot on the games had notches that would only accept these tokens, of course. I'm assuming it was so you didn't go get cheap tokens somewhere else, then use them at their arcade.

I think this is due to the different attitudes regarding change in the UK/US.  As far as i'm aware, in the US, there are only 2 or 3 coins in general use (25c, 5c, 1c) which means to make an amount like 69c, you need 2x25, 3x5, and 4x1 = 9 coins, whereas in the UK we have a full gamut of coins that are in constant use (£2,£1,50p,20p,10p,5p,2p,1p), and therefore feeding a machine with the right amount is considerably easier, and you end up with less change overall (69p = 1x50, 1x10, 1x5, 2x2 = 5 coins).

Of course, i may be talking rubbish!
