coin door mech holders?
« on: July 19, 2009, 05:46:43 pm »
i've got a coin door i wanna put back together it's missing the coin mech holder and the mech it self, i know that most of the mech's are pretty standard, but what about the holders? are they universal?

i think it's a "coin control" door, happs sells some holders but i was thinking of getting a door off ebay and stripping it down to restore this one, is that feasible? i'd like to keep this door since the cut out on the kick panel would have to be replaced for a over under coin door.

below is my coin door (stripped)

Anyone got change for a dollar?

sad to say i dont have good news. Most cabinets ive bought that have been taken out of service have had their coin doors broken, have the mechanisms removed, are totally stripped, or they even just remove the entire coin door.

ive never had luck trying to restore one cause it almost always equals out or would be more expensive in price to do so, Vs just getting a new one from HAPP.

have you taken measurements on your existing door and compared it to every door in happs catalog yet? if not, try doing that first.

also you could find out who originally made your door (it should be stamped or written on their somewhere or their should be a number or something you could use to trace down the MFG.) Happ sells plenty of parts for a lot of doors, so this isnt impossible it will probably end up costing a lot more though.

no markings on it other then someone with a silver marker.. says streetf #12 at the top..

and on the bottom it says 630

i assume the vender most likely had the door on a street fighter at one time.. dunno.

anyway i see this type of door on a lot of games/cabinets of the mid to early 80's.. and those was coin controls.. so thats what makes me thinks this is a coin contorl as wel.

happ's does have some doors that look liek this..

http://www.happ.com/coindoors/40000800.htm (athough it looks like it has those clips for mounting rather then holes in the frame.

a pinball door looks almost identical http://www.happ.com/coindoors/40070700.htm
price is 65.45 + s&h

i've seen coin doors on ebay go for 20-30, less then half of a new one from happs, so my thought was to get a coin door and strip it down and move it's hardware over to this one.

so the question was are the mech holders universal? if so does buying a used door off ebay sound feasible way to restore this one.

personally i like the over under better, this one drops down some plastic tubing.. to the vault which takes up quite a lot of room.. but putting a O/U on it means replacing the entire kick panel which is more work/money and i'd still have to get the parts for a working door.

also something to consider.

Why dont you find a seemingly identical coin door on ebay and then ask the seller for the dimensions of it, compare it with your own, and also ask him if both slots are working and get him to say something along the lines of a guarantee that they are?

it would sure be a lot less effort than stripping the door you get to fix your inop one.

its worth a try.

also to mention is that you rarely if ever will find a used commercial game that has a working coin door it is actually a legal requirement to disable the coin mechanisms before arcade operators or wholesalers can sell a decommissioned game to a home user.

the industry regulators want to make absolutely sure that home users dont charge their friends to use their game. otherwise your required to apply for a vending liscence of some type, depending on the state, and you get a nice tax sticker that goes on your machine.

i just figured id share that.

there are'nt as many doors like this on ebay as there are over/unders.

i did ask one seller for a picture (they only posted front) of the back to see what all it had, and they was selling asis.. i asked if they had tried to run any quarters though it even though i under stood it was a as is sell.

i got a rude response about how it was only selling for a few bucks, to give them a break.

needless to say i went from "gonna bid a little" to not bidding at all.

thats just one seller mind you..

anyway the point is if they're universal i dont need to find a perfect match dimensionally for a drop in replacement, i can just pick up the cheapest door i can find.. and it'll probably be a over under.

also just because the frame will fit dont mean the door will be a good replacement.. some doors that look just like this have the mechs' close together..

the vault is on the bottom with tubes running down to it.. which means if the placement of the mech's are like this door is (space apart), then i'd have to cut and move the tubes closer together.

no i did'nt know of any law, is that state or federal?

from what the guy who sold me the last few cabinets told me, its federal to disable a coin door and by the same token its up to the states as far as liscencing goes.

Your pictures are of a Coin Acceptors, Inc (a.k.a. "Coinco") brand coin door. Sad to say but Coin Acceptors bailed out of the amusement business about ten years ago and now only concentrate of coin handling equipment for vending machines.

The supply of brand new and new-old-stock parts are hard to get. The last known supplier is The Great Amusement Emporium in Colorado. Unless you are a game route operator and have $2,000 to make the minimum order, you are out of luck.

The modern coin door that fits your mounting frame dimensions is the Happ Pinball Door from Happ Controls.

As to disabling/removing the coin equipment when the game is sold to a home user, there is no federal or state law requiring that. It all depends on the individual game operator as to what they want to do when they sell a game to a home. Many game operators leave everything complete---they're just happy to sell an unprofitable, old machine. However, there are some game operators out there that are very paranoid about a sold game returning to somebody else's route so they remove the coin equipment or the whole coin door.

thanks for the info ken, at least now i know exactly what it is now, i thought the happ's pinball looked similar but was'nt sure so it's nice to know.

so does that mean only the coin mech holders from the defunct coinco will fit this door?
from what you said you did'nt specifically say it but i suspect not possible/feasible to get just any old door off of ebay and swap it's hardware out on the back of the door.

is this true for most coin doors? that the mech holders are proprietary then?

Parts are proprietary to each make of coin door.

You know that would be a good door for some of those coin switches over at GGG that way you wouldnt really need the mechs.

If you decide to get rid of this one let me know I might get it to put some of those in for another cab with no door cut yet.

That's just what I was thinking!  Since the paint is crap anyway, you could even modify the door somewhat to make the buttons fit correctly (if they don't initially).  If you want to get a finish on the door like the Happs coindoors, I have refinished 2 and find the the Rustoleum Hammered paint works GREAT!!!

http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=29

This is easy to find at box stores.  Be careful with it though!  It contains fibers of glass that irritate the skin.  Wear protective cloths, a mask, and goggles and wash your hands IMMEDIATELY when done.  BUT, it turns out beautiful when done.
