Am I "weird"?
« on: December 16, 2007, 04:42:49 pm »
As I've mentioned countless times before, I have just started the construction of my first MAME cabinet.  (Got a friend to help me out, and just found out that my dad would love to help me as well).  I started out by getting the controls I needed from Happ controls and Mike's Arcade Parts.  (Mike's supplied the four-way joystick and Happ everything else so far.  I still need my spinner, trackball, and IPAC, however).

Anyway, I've put together a mock-up in Cardboard to see how the layout would work and how many buttons I can move to other places.  I'm REALLY happy I put this mock-up together because I realized that I planned on putting far more buttons than I needed to on my control panel.  Many of these will be elminated and/or moved to an admin panel hidden on the sides of the CP.

Anyway, one thing I've done is assembled one button with the microswitch and hooked up a mock-crimped disconnect to some 18-AWG wire I have.  The thing is, I can't stop pressing the button and feeling/hearing the click.

I've got this button next to me while also viewing the control panel and I keep thinking "God, I want this cabinet done right now".  Am I weird for doing this?  Did anybody else do anything crazy like this while preparing for their first cabinet build?  <click, click, click, click, ---gosh-darn--- I CAN'T STOP PRESSING THIS BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!>  :D

When I was building my first cab it was nearly ready for the big XMas party. But I didn't get time to finish it. So at the party I was showing everyone my nearly finished cab and noone could play it. It was very depressing!

Mate, my cab is in a very early pre build stage. My CP and PC are not in the cab at teh mo but my admin buttons are installed (Put them below the CP - out of the way of prying hands).
But every time I go to my parents house and see my cab I say hello baby and press a few of the admin buttons to hear that click ;o)

You are the only people that know this ;o(

just out of curiosity are you obsessive compulsive? seems like a tick to me. (Dr. stealth is in the building  ;D  "and how does that make you feel")

eh, who am I kidding I used to do the same thing with pens in school... all my switches be leafs (I did that on purpose) but I'm sure if I had micro switches laying around I'd be clicking away!

You know, I might be slightly OCD.  At work, every day I MUST play FreeCell, Hearts, Solitare and Spider Solitare and win every day.  For Solitare, it has to be a score of 6000 or greater.  So yeah, I may be OCD.   ;D

As for the microswitches, when I was growing up I remember the buttons and joysticks in the arcades making a "click" sound when I used them so I had to get the microswitches.  Most games were with the volume so loud you couldn't hear them, but I remember playing SF2 and hearing the "click-click-click-click" when I threw a Hadoken.  :D

I guess clicking the button would be better than clicking one of those loud annoying clicky things you used to get at carnivals. Forget what they were called, but they were usually shaped like a bug and had a piece of spring steel on the bottom that made a very loud click when you pressed it.
My mom threw many of those away after I laid them down... Lucky for me she had that much patience.

But remember, each micro switch has a finite number of clicks. Each click is taking the switch one click closer to failure. (so you might want to rotate your clicking buttons every now and then).

Am I weird for even posting this????

I'm pretty sure those are called 'annoying clicky things'...I actually have one I got at a pet store to train my birds.  The birds are now gone...but I still click it when I walk by it in the garage.

The funny thing is, a buddy I work with is helping me build the cab and he wanted to see what the buttons were like so I brought one into work.  Now he can't stop clicking the damned thing.  lol.  I guess the buttons feel just fine.  :D

The first cab I got was a heavily water damaged Jungle King.  It was garbage - no more - all I wanted off it was the coin door.  But I had to take the whole cab for it.

*shrug* at the time it was a fine thing.  I popped it in the back of my van and brought it to my mom's house (I was doing assembly at her garage).  I brought it home, and dropped a quarter in the coin mech.  It was the coolest sound.  I dropped it over and over.  Such a nostalgic sound.

So...no.  I don't think you're weird.

Jav, the men in white coats are on their way...:P

Seriously, nothing wrong with clicking that pushbutton... the noise has a strong nostalgia element for us in this hobby.

I had a single pushbutton left over from my first cab. It used to get picked up and pressed when I was thinking about stuff (just like Jav).

Now though, it's been cut into my monitor degaussing circuit and is my trigger for a manual degauss (my temp setup while testing the system). I miss my pushbutton...

Clicking the button is normal and fine. I'd be concerned if you were getting too attached to a joystick...

BUT

its when you start clicking back that you know that you are insane.   :banghead:

I do that any time I do work on one of my coin doors, only I always have to watch it travel through the mech a few times. Its mesmerizing for sure.

As for clicking buttons, I was more a a trackball spinner. My first cab was a Golden Tee that I was converting...

Happ Ultimates are okay, but it's the Happ Pushbutton with Horizontal Microswitch ones that you have to watch out for. Those are really addicting.  I'm up to two CPs a day and it's hard to hang out with friends or eat a meal without wondering how long until I can click another one. I might need to check into Pushbuttons Anonymous.  :scared

Remember when computer mice were new and it was hard to stop clicking them? Same thing with mouse wheels.  ;D

I think you're perfectly normal.  You're eager to get the thing done.  It's very exciting to build your first arcade!  It's like getting a new toy and you don't have the batteries to start it up.  What kid do you know doesn't take it out of the box and play with it anyway?

Call me DeLuSioNaL (pun intended), but I did the same thing of bringing one of the pushbuttons to work.  It really did help me think when I clicked away at it.  Everyone who I showed (who are not into arcade restorations by the way) HAD to click it several times.  They thought it was so cool.  Now imagine someone who IS into this kind of stuff...  I rest my case.

For all you "closet clickers" out there.  'Fess up!  You know you want to!   :laugh2:

Heh.  It's now getting worse since I've got my plywood sheet out and have marked out all of the locations to the proper dimensions and whatnot.  Hopefully I'll get that plunge router for Christmas that I asked for so I can do some cutting, routing, and creating!!!!!

Well I'm in trouble now.  I've ordered my trackball and my spinner and I have this feeling that I'll be spinning that thing non-stop, clicking my button and then rolling my trackball.  Once this CP is cut out and made playable I'll have trouble getting anything else done!

Just be careful with the trackball.  It's rather delicate underneath with the boards exposed.  I'd advise against it.

If you ordered a Groovy Game Gear spinner (Turbo Twist 2) that baby is plug and play (USB) and you could probably hold it in one hand (or mount it in a button hole on the piece of plywood you made) and actually use it in Mame for a test run!

Good luck!

Good point.  I'll probably just keep it in the box then.

For the spinner, I got a Tornado Spinner which is PS2/USB compatible.  I'm psyched about that because both my Trackball and Spinner are PS2/USB compatible and this means I won't need to worry about buying an Opti-Pac as well.

Is that more, or less, normal than taking the sears catalog to the bathroom?

Can't wait to see your final product!

Neither can I!!!!!   ;D

I'm hoping to have the CP cut out and ready to accept the controls by the end of this year.  (Depending upon what tools Santa is leaving under the tree.   ;D )  I'm still trying to figure out how much of an angle I want to have the CP angled at, and whether I want to trim off the back corners so it winds up matching up exactly with the cabinet.  (The cabinet plans on being 29" wide which is as wide as it can get and still fit through my 29.5" wide doorways in my house).  The backend of the CP layout is currently 36" so I'd have to place angle cuts in the back corner that are 3.5" in.  This will create a profile that is like a rectangle with two trapezoids on the outside.  The outer flat area would be a great area to put in the beer can/mug holders though!  Hmmmmm.......

BTW, here's my "announcement" in the Project Announcement Forum.  Right now it's mostly just me babbling on about what I want to do, but once I get going with the cutting I'll start putting in photos.  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74344.0
