Cheap touchscreens on eBay (not mine)
« on: December 02, 2007, 09:57:41 am »
There is a guy selling ELO 15" Touchscreens for $80 Starting bid, $85 BIN, $18 shipping.

Several members here have purchased them now, including myself, and they work great.

Here is the link

The seller has a lot of sales and has a 99.7 feedback as well.

I would agree this is probably a good deal if the monitors do not have screen burn in them and there are no hugh scratches on the glass.

That's not a bad price but he didn't have international shipping listed... Looking at his completed items he had them up for $105 Buy It Now. I use a 15" and it's a good size for a jukebox.

Here is a link to one of them Chad. The original link was the results page of a search I did with the auction title.

Wow, noone bid on any of them.

Yeah, I saw that. Not too sure why. These touch screens use SAW (surface acoustic wave) technology.  They have 90% light transmission which is really good, only capacitive has better (that I know of) The SAW touch overlays on these are glass so they will never wear out. Resistive overlays have only 75% light transmission and are made of film that can wear out over time.

This particular model is 14.25” wide and fits perfectly between 16” on center studs. I am getting ready to flush mount one of these in the wall for a Jukebox/Digital picture frame.

The seller will probably re-list these so I would keep an eye out if anyone is in the market.

I just put up a bunch of 16" on center studs... tempting.  They're still open.

Chad i think you should contact the seller, he clearly has a few of these. If you ask him he can probably put up a listing with a buy it now for you.

Yes, it is plug and play like most any other monitor. All I had to do is install the ELO driver for the touchscreen to function.

You are probably thinking of the blue connector next to the VGA and USB connectors. That is for an external on screen display controller (so the manual says). The one I got has a control panel for the OSD on the side.

Hope this helps.

I just received mine, nice condition, works great!

A few questions to anyone who has one...

This is going into a jukebox, screen will be mounted at about a 45 degree angle...

What is the best way to make (or buy) a bezel for this?

Thanks for any help...

Did anyone have any trouble with the touch screen they bought from this guy?  I just got mine and the touch screen part works great, but I am seeing some red-type streaking off any icons or text that is on the screen.  I am not sure if this is a refresh rate type problem or something actually wrong with the monitor itself.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

check the brightnes or contrast settings.  i dont have this screen but my 19" was streaking something fierce when i first turned it on. mostly text and white areas but after adjustments all was well.

I just put in a bid for one. I'm going to use it for a project for my kids.

Does anyone have a quick link to the drivers for the touchscreen? I'll be using Windows 2000.

I've never been very good at finding the right drivers for anything in the past.

I'm much better at cabinet building than I am with the computer stuff! ::)

Look here for some good information on how to mount these screens (in wall). You need to be careful when mounting the trim bezel over the screen.

I may not wall mount it, actually... I have an old family heirloom console stereo from the 60s that I want to gently convert into a touchscreen juke.  I originally bought a CRT for it but reality set in when I realized how much modification I was going to have to do in order to mount it securely.  I want to rebuild the original tube stereo and can't do that if I need a CRT in there.

I just ordered  mine. Thanks for the link mountain.

I think i'm going to go with urbecrisch's method for my frame since I have no tools. This seems to be the easiest method. I will be ordering a frame from http://americanframe.com/  as soon as I get the screen to measure it.

Just for those of you in the UK, I bought one of these 15" touchscreens from ebay for 60pound delivered.

Works fine, it's serial not usb but I've got a convertor kicking around which works. Amusingly it actually came with half a kiosk attached (as shown in the picture), but just helped it survive parcelforce in one piece. Very happy with it.

Okay WTF.

The shipper requires a signature for receipt.  Because no one is home at my house during the day I have to go pick the package up.  The terminal is more than a half hour from my house, in a different ---smurfing--- state, and apparently only open during the regular workday.

Had I know that would happen I would never have ordered the damn thing.

EDIT:  Bigger WTF.  I just mapquested it... the terminal is more than halfway across a neighboring state.

They never left a signature tab.  I was tracking it via the website.  I don't think they ever even attempted delivery.

BTW, I never did get it.  I'm going to have to try and get a refund from the seller.  I'll eat shipping if I have to, that's not a big deal, but FedEx really effed this one up.

It is common sense.  I've had this problem with FedEx before - as have my neighbors.  Whoever contracts out this route is not good.  If I had known, or perhaps noticed, ahead of time that this guy uses FedEx I would not have tried to buy from him.  It is not the seller's fault, nor have I said it was, this is all on FedEx.

You sound like one of the very same people you complain about from free cycle.  In this circumstance the guy is selling a million of them, but if it were a private seller, I'd tell you to take the road trip to Fed Ex.  Why should he have to deal with issues on your end?  Ever heard of karma? ;)

anyone else interested in a group buy on these?  We can most likely get a lot of 10 for $725.  That's about$15 each cheaper than the one piece price.

I'd probably be in for one or two.

Just curious.

Quick update:  they shipped a second time and this time the FedEx guy actually attempted delivery.  Probably was ordered to after I spoke with his supervisor about it... left a tab properly and I have the monitor now.  Haven't powered it up but well packed, good seller.

Just an FYI, I believe that the threaded mounting holes on the back of these monitors are M4 and arranged in a 75mm square so can be mounted to VESA LCD monitor mounts.   I'd guess that 6mm long M4 machine screws would be the right choice for mounting.  The 10mm long ones that I have are too long.

I bought one, works like a charm. Interesting is that there seems to be a much better lcd viewing angle from above the screen than below. For the desktop mount I am thinking of I am going to rotate the screen 180 deg.

I will have to look into that. My kids always complain that they can't see the screen very well. As you can see, they are looking up at the screen.

No bezel yet.

Wanted to say thanks for the link.  Ordered mine today, $103 shipped.  Seems like a fair price.  Made a post about my plans over in Project Announcements.  I currently have a hole in the wall, some electrical wire in the car, VGA / USB cable and VESA mount in the mail.  Shouldn't take to long before some more info is available!

In another thread in another universe, you promised all of us we would see some more information on your in wall touchscreen.  I am doing the exact same in my game room and I would like to see some information.  How did you mount the screen to the backside fo the wall?

Any one else have any advice for someone planing to do this?  What software do you use?

I posted some pictures and the whole story ( so far ) about how I got mine mounted to the wall.  Info Here.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=79878.0

In a nutshell I glued and screwed 3 pieces of .75" plywood together, then with a friends help we leveled and screwed the plywood sandwich into the concrete.  Once that was done a simple $29.99 Vesa mount was used and the monitor was hung.  People with more skillz, tools and time could certainly mount the monitor without the Vesa mount, but for me it was a simple solution that a knucklehead like myself could accomplish.

I really Like SK jukebox, but it seeks like the track titles would be hard to press.  But I don't have my touchscreen yet.  I will be using the touchscreen for other things like home automation (xlobby).  I like xlobby and I even like the music player that comes with it but I have grown accustomed to the SK jukebox interface, its just simple.

I was curious if any one else uses theirs for more of a smarthome thing.  It just seems like the way to go since it won't be playing music ALL the time.

My touchscreen doubles as a digital picture frame. I bought a slideshow screensaver that takes over after 2 minutes of innactivity and flips through all of our pictures.

I am using the Touchtone Jukebox software and really like it, both my wife and daughter have mastered the selection of songs and stuff without my help so it is pretty easy.  I also have shortcuts on the desktop to some radio stations, 4 local and one in my wifes hometown in Germany.  I have been trying for years to get her setup with a way to listen to that silly radio station in such a way that she would actually do it.  I swear when I came home yesterday for lunch and she had brought one of the wireless speakers up to the kitchen and was listening to German radio I almost cried.  We also have a shortcut for local weather and movie listings.  I love the idea of video poker, my dad would get a kick out of that, will have to check that out.  I can also use my Slingbox to get TV onto that screen.  I can use VLC to get my local HD channels on there too because of the HDHomerun networked antenna I have though currently thats not done.  I have the Seattle Seahawks Screen Server software installed, after 10 minutes it goes into screen saver mode and cycles through pictures of the team, there is also a taskbar at the bottom with single click access to the current roster, the cheerleaders, rss feed of updated news in that area, pretty cool really.

Zeosstud

http://www.mp3touchscreens.com/  Touchtone Jukebox Software

While I still like the touchtone software alot, after some more testing it looks like Albumplayer might just be the touchscreen software of choice.  Wife got a chance to goof around with it today and says she likes it better than touchtone.  I think the major complaint is that the album art seems to have to redraw itself when you scroll down it in Touchtone, using Albumplayer that is simply not an issue.  Here is a screenshot of Albumplayer and Touchtone on my UMPC.

I already built a jukebox but wanted to drop a post here in case someone could help me.  I was thinking of custom building a Merit Megatouch and this is a great solution for the monitor.  Does anyone know of any build plans or software for a Merit?  I haven't really seen any emulation for this before.

To keep this jukebox, I built (Or rather assembled) the Mameroom.com wall mounted jukebox which works great.  It would be better with a touchscreen and no buttons but it's too late now.

Since none of the ebay vendors carrying these monitors ship to Italy, is there any good soul, perhaps one of the BYOAC vendors, willing to buy it for me? I'll refund domestic and international (if not too expensive) shipping costs, of course. If any of the BYOAC vendors are interested, I need some arcade parts too, so we can arrange one big shipping. Thanks in advance.  :)

like you presss the screen in the lower right and the mouse moves to the upper left?

Just install the elo drivers and "allign".  You should be set after that.  For some reason the microsoft drivers do that when you use them.

I've tried to get a group buy together for some of the lots of 10 (would come out to ~$65 each w/o shipping).  Didn't get much interest there.  Not sure anyone is willing to chance it.

If we could get a buy together, I'd help you out.  I would pick up at least 2 for $65+ shipping each.

There are 2 different sellers of touchscreens on Ebay at about the same price 60-80 $. For about 2 months now I have had Email correspandance with one of them. They would send to Denmark for a reasonable price and that was great. But then someday the guy I had made a deal with had been fired and the new person in charge ignored me, so I kinda gave up on the idea. Until today when I found this site www.myus.com.
For an initial setup price of 20$ and a monthlyfee of 7$ they give you and adress in Florida to send your packets too. They then forward them to you in Denmark, Germany, china, Tibet whereever....
The prices for overseas delivery is very cheap aswell. 5.5$/kg for 5-7day delivery. Just remember you still need to send the screen to Florida + pay the fee to www.myus.com + pay overseas delivery + pay VAT + custom + whatever in your country. Whether its worth is is up to you.

I will try it as soon as they verify my visa and let you know how it goes.

EDIT: Could anyone tell me how much the package weighs? With 1 screen or 2 screens.

For those of you that have bought one of these:  did you have to buy any of the cables, or did he send them with cables?  I just want to make sure when I get this that all is included except for the bezel and drivers.

Power - male to female c-13 cable
video male - male 15 pin dsub
USB - standard USB cable

All were pretty short (2' - ish)

I think I'm in for one of these.

Offhand, anyone see a problem with this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=360066618413

I was just afraid of drivers/compatibility issues going forward, and didn't want a bulky CRT.  Cheap though.  Maybe if someone on the board who's familiar with touchscreens can verify it'll work well with future OS upgrades, this might be a good second chance offer for someone who's building an actual jukebox (not a flush wall-mount).

I think for a few extra dollars though, it's probably better to get a tried and true Elo flatscreen...

EDIT: It says it's an LCD... looks like a CRT... can't research right now, gotta go!

Anyone know the EXACT dimensions of the screen on these things?  I'm still waiting for mine to arrive and I can't continue working without these dimensions.  I'm laying out the face panel and I need to know how big the monitor opening is going to be.

Thanks!!!

The outside dimension of the glass is 14" wide by 10.375" tall.  There are a couple wires on there that you will have to take into consideration when countersinking.  I don't have a picture handy, or I'd post what I'm talking about.

The actual usable touchscreen area is 13" wide by 10.125" tall.

Awesome.  Thanks - so if I'm reading this correctly, the through hole should be 13" wide by 10.125" tall and then there will be additional material I'll have to route out behind the edges of this hole to get it to lay flush.

That is correct.  I don't know exactly what it is to the bracket that it needs to be  countersunk, but whatever it is, you need to do an additional 1/8" channel that is 1/8" thick to compensate for those wires that are running on the face of the glass.  I don't have the screen in front of me or I'd figure it out for ya.

OK, I thought I'd post these pics since my monitor arrived last night.

In the last pic, I've circled the wires that are attached to the front of the glass.  Does anyone think removing them somehow would pose any problems?  I'm going to be using 1/8" plexiglass around the monitor so I can't route material away to get it to sit flush.  I would reconnect any wires I move but just not to the monitor glass.  I have no idea how to go about doing this or if it is even possible but I thought I'd throw it out there...

javeryh, you can't remove those wires, they go to the transducers which is what makes the touchscreen work. I used some 1/8" closed loop foam, attached to the back side of my bezel at the edge, to fill the gap. This is what the manufaturer recommends.

I posted ELO mounting recommendations here in the past.

heh, good thing I didn't start sawing them off!  I'll keep an eye out for that closed loop foam (unless someone can post an easy place to get some).  I guess the gap is no big deal because I sure as heck couldn't tell it was there from the close-ups you posted.  Thanks!

Tonight I'm going to hook the touchscreen up to my home computer (laptop) and see if I can get it to work.  I think I need to download drivers from the ELO website too.  I've never used one of these things before so I have no idea what to expect - is it like a mouse or something that you control by touch?

Also, do I need to worry about handling it like a decased CRT or is there no built up charge in there?

Nothing to worry about.  Now, I wouldn't lick my finger and touch all the wires, but no voltage threat here!

Thanks for the info guys!  I got the drivers loaded (thanks mountain!), the screen is up and running and I can't wipe the smile off of my face.  I've never played with one of these things before and it is so freaking cool.  I was messing around in iTunes and I can see how these things are perfect for jukeboxes.

FYI, the link at the top of the thread is not yielding any more monitors for sale - I hope he has more of them left because I am going to have to install a screen in the wall somewhere in the TV room one of these days...

What driver are you using for XP Pro?  I just downloaded SW600516.

Michael

PS I have it working now.  I cannot seem to delete my message though.

I think he's been out before and relisted a few weeks later.  I'm definitely buying another one when they pop up again for a future project.

I actually have a saved search on ebay for "et1545l" and it updates me daily on searches for these things.  You can obviously chainge it to suit your needs, but it has worked well for me so far.

Does anyone know how to adjust the vertical size of the image?  I can adjust the vertical position, the horizontal size and position, but not the vertical size.

Hey Mountain,

Do you remember the sellers name on EBay?  I still see some around the $100 plus mark.  I am looking for a 19"

Thanks.

I've purchased three 15" ELO touchscreens from this seller.  One came DOA, but was promptly replaced.  Inventory comes and goes, but there may be a 19" from time to time.

One thing to keep in mind is USB vs serial (depending on your setup).  I'd pay an extra $5-10 for USB, personally.  Although, I stil have my two from the group by last year sitting on a shelf...

Hi, I'm gonna do a recessed wall mount installation.  Would any of you mind sharing some detailed pictures of the installation process? or post a web site that has pictures?

Thanks a lot!
