I'm looking for a hobbyist to help me modify an X-Arcade for handicapped use. I know how to do the work but I can't physically do the work. I would like to pay on a per-project basis.

I'm curious what you need done exactly as well, and also what sort of timeframe you are looking at.

I'm in NJ, but don't have a ton of free time lately. If I can be of any help though, I'd be glad to do it.

I'm in the process of modifying an X-Arcade joystick to incorporate sockets for disability standard switches.
A disability standard switch can range from a large separate push button on/off switch that can be operated by broad movements of the body, to a chin operated mini-joystick with a center push switch.The standard part is that they plug into specially made or adapted equipment via a 1/8" headphone style socket for single switches and 9-pin dsub atari style socket for multiple switches

I'm basing my project on a project found at http://www.oneswitch.org.uk/4/DIY/x-arcade.htm
Since the circuit board can support two players my project will have two sets of sockets with 4 1/8" primary action button sockets and three 9-pin dsub sockets going to all of the joystick buttons.

I'm also trying to use a tilt switch to operate the four directional buttons with head movement.

where r u in NJ ?

If this switches you talk about are almost the same as microswitches (momentary), it should be no problem at all.

The single switch plugs are mono headphone style audio plugs. The multiple plugs are d-sub miniature 9 pin plugs. The special switches work like arcade switches. I live in Newton.

Am I correct in thinking that you just need sockets to accept the 1/8" plugs and d-subs mounted in the x-arcade and wired to it?

If that's all, it's simple, even if a panel has to be mounted, (I never saw a headphone jack that would mount to anything other than the thickness of sheetmetal).

I am about 3 hours away from you. I don't know when I would have a day for it though, as I have my own business and custody of my 2 boys. I will see what I can do.

I didn't think of that... BUT- can't the x-arcade with adapters be used on the pc and ps2 and xbox etc?

Yes it does. That is why I bought it.
To modify it you need to directly jump off each arcade button and connect it to the mono and d-sub 9 connections for player one and jump off a wiring harness coming from theX-ARCADE circuit board for player two

Hey Jeff.

Do you already have all the necessary mono jacks and dsub sockets already?

Am I correct in assuming that a metal panel needs to be inserted to attach the jacks and sockets to?

Does anyone here have a pic or a link to a pic of the inside of the x arcade? Would like to see (1) entire inside, (2) circuit board, and (3) the connectors used attaching micros. I am sure someone will ask why or say I don't need to see those specifics, SO, wondering best places to solder (would rather solder than splice), if terminals are uninsulated, wires can be soldered to them quickly.

As I said, I would like to help, but don't know how soon I can get out there. If someone else can, feel free to help. But until I hear it's DONE, I will try to find a day. (Not that easy as I have my own bussiness and custody of my children).

If you have the dsubs and can show me a pic of the EXACT ones you have I might be able to make the panel in the mean time.

here's a shot of when I installed a spinner into my XArcade solo. The dual is identical except for another set of wires and joystick/buttons etc.

hey Jeff. I haven't forgot about you. Though I did think you dissapeared the first time I asked if you have the parts and got no response. I've been real busy lately. I know its 6 weeks away, but when the kids go back to school I will definately make a day to get out to you, if you don't have it done yet. You are a few hours drive away.
