Terminator 2 gun base dimensions
« on: May 23, 2005, 09:55:50 pm »
Can anyone tell me what the dimensions of the bases of the Terminator 2 guns are? Also, if you could tell me what angle they're set at on the CPO and how long the guns themselves are, it would be real handy. Thanks! :)

Hehe.   P

the guns aren't going to be arriving for several days, and I wanted to get started on possibly designing the control panel for them. And, I need to know the dimensions for the boxes that go over the mechanics of the guns, because the ones I got don't look like they have any, so I'll probably be making my own out of MDF.

Basically, i need to know what size "footprint" the gun has with the shell around the base mechanics. My set of guns has no "shell" around the base mechanics, and I'm gonna need to make my own "shell" some how. Using 1/2" MDF is a good possibility (I don't realy have any metal working skill), but I'm still gonna need to know what size to make it. It'd be nice if I could have one made out of sheet metal though. I could probably ask my Gandpa about that, but I'm gonna need to know the dimensions. If anyone else has the T2 guns, if you could make some measurements of the base for me, I'd be very thankful. :)

As for the "angle" thing, basically I mean what angle the gun's footprint is at. The guns don't face straight forward when they're in "neutral" position on the original arcade machine, they face the center of the screen. I guess I can just wait till my panel arrives and check for myself though.

In case anyone's wondering what I'm talking about...

Here's the guns I just ordered off of eBay.

Now, here's a set of guns on a complete T2 arcade machine.

I need to somehow replicate those metal boxes that go around the bases of the guns. Now that I think about it, using MDF probably won't work since it'd be too thick. My best option would probably be to hand-machine new ones out of sheet aluminum. My grandpa does know a thing or two about metal working, so I can probably get some help from him. But I'm gonna need to know the measurements of each individual piece of the boxes. I could always go down to the arcade and measure the ones on their T2 machine, but I don't want to draw looks from employees when they see me take out a tape measurer. That's always akward. If someone who has complete guns could just take some measurements and possibly do a quicky illustration in MS paint or some other program, I'd be most appreciative. :)

perhaps you should change the angle from what they used on the original.  Here's why...   I'm sure they were just mounted so that the guns pointed at the center of the screen in the dead center of the gun's horizontal range of movement.  The original cab had the monitor "mirrored-in" so the center point you'll be aiming for will be much closer on your cab than it originally was (That is, unless your monitor is going to be mirrored or you have a hella long control panel ;D).

Well, I'm not doing anything crazy with the monitor. But I'm using the Lusid plans, so the control panel with be sloped. I'm going to need some way to mount the guns so that they're level, even though they are mounted on a sloped panel. I'm not sure what the best way to do this is, though. Any suggestions would be handy!

The angle that the gun bases are pointed at is like this /      \ is  because that way whe you point the gun's left or right, you're pointing at the edge of the screen and you won't be pointing offscreen, which helps maintain the illusion that the gun is firing something at the screen.

as far as angling the panel itself perhaps you could build a wooden box like 1UP did but then cut the bottoms off at an angle so that its mounted flat.

Ok, I getcha. :)

I'm thinking it'd probably make the most sense to make the "mounting boxes" be about the size of the guns' mounting footprints. It want the control panel to look farily clean, so i'll probably do something like in the illustration below.

But, since it's going to be mounted at an angle, it'll be pretty tricky figuring out how to cut the MDF and keep the top level. Oy, I hate math, but I get the feeling I'll be doing alot of it if I intend to get this idea to work.

yeah.. that looks like a good idea and is probably what I am going to do also..  The only thing I wonder about is, since some people like to play T2 with one of their elbows on the panel to sort of prop themselves up.  I wonder if angling the control panel would make that uncomfortable... ??? grr.. so much to think about..  we all just need about 5-6 Mame cabinets for each type of game  ;D

As for the "boxes" that go around the gun mechanics, I think I've got it figured out more or less how they should be built. But I've still got the dilemma of not knowing what measurements the parts should have, which would be really useful and important information to have when I go to build this stuff. It would probably get rid of alot of measuring and expirimentation if I could know what size everything should be ahead of time.
