clonestar! that is one meataxe of a juke!

i was thinking of making a waist high, stand over sort of one with the screen mounted horzontally but i think im converted! so the 'Athlon 700 Mhz I think with about 256Mb RAM' handles it all all right does it? thats another thing ive wondered, or is there a little lag when youve got 100gigs of albums loaded?

and everyone else... POST YOUR LINKS!!!!

Hello All!

Here is a Art Deco Jukebox with blue mirror, chrome and lighting! Not yet finished, still finishing the center section that will be the button panel and hidden keyboard drawer with cd burner/ dvd, miniature keyboard and card reader. The jukebox will have full sound system with a commercial amp and lighting in the columns that i am designing that will do patterns and sound to light like the old 70's color organs controlled from the computer.

This will eventually be in plans and kit form.

Let me know what you think!

Kevin, that's a gorgeous design!  Do you have experience with large console radios of the '30's?  Do a google image search for '12S370' (a Zenith console model that I own) and you'll see why I ask.   I can't wait to see your finished juke.

Good eye Brian! To answer your question yes i have experience with old radios and they were an influence in my design as well as the art deco radios of the time period with the blue mirror and chrome. This design also resembles the very first jukeboxes of the late 40's when they played 78rpm records. One of my favourite Zenith radios was the model 5808(google if you want)

I will post some pictures when it's done!

This will be sold on the Virtual Music Jukebox website for the same price as the wall mount jukexebox. I tried to find where the wall mount was for sale on the site and coudn't find it, they have changed thier website around! I believe somewhere around $50.00 or less! The kit i'm not sure of at this point.
Thanks for the interest, i have spent alot of time on this jukebox!

Updated pictures for the Art Deco Jukebox!

I don't have the button panel done yet and just stained evrything to get it finished. Installed the sound system and sounds great. I will post more pictures soon. The plastic in the center section will get polished and have rope light behind it to light up like the top and bottom palstic in the picture above in the earler post!

Let Me Know what you think on my design and the project good or bad!
Thanks,
Kevin

She's almost done--some detailing work to be done and a few modifications but it works!  Its a sony vaio laptop behind a crt touchscreen panel running chris's winjuke.  the Laptop is fully removable (since it's the wife's laptop and no hacking was one of the mandates of using it)  The whole thing weighs about 50lbs and with a separate usb hard drive (behind the laptop) I have 40Gb's of music loaded so far.  Not meant to rock a hall but perfect for patios and porches--which is what i use it for...
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Brian,

Thanks for the post! I don't have any new pictures just yet but close. What is holding me up is getting the last 2 peices of plastic getting thier edges flamed so they look like the rest of the plastic.

Thanks!

I haven't thought of making any for anyone, i know i have alot of time in it but alot of that time was getting everything i wanted and being on a tight budget. I have worked on it for a couple of years designing it and having to remake some of the trim once i had it the way i wanted then make it in better wood. I'm not saying this just because it's my jukebox but the sound is awesome, i din't use the best midrange and tweeters they were pulls from some stereo speakers and then i used 15" woofers with crossovers and a pyle amp.

This is eventually going to be made into plans and possibly a kit, the last of my drawings have just went out to be done up in cad and step by step procedure.

I will get some more pictures on as soon as i can.

If you would want to build one i can guide you through the process or i can talk to my brother and come up with a typical price and email you. Let me know if i can email you and we can discuss some options.

Once again thanks for the comments!

Uses an NCR touchscreen web kiosk that was part of a Burger King POS till found on eBay. Runs Win98SE (it's only a 266Mhz with 64M RAM) and TouchTone software. Connected to the web for Internet radio as well. One the good things is that it doesn't need any fans. I plan to build a new cabinet with a backwards sloping front when I get the time.

I registered here after lurking for awhile just to post my pics.  After scanning this thread, I feel that mine is a little boring, yet perhaps a little more attainable for less accomplished woodworkers than many of the other masterpieces here.

Anyway, I posted my pics over at flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/overwired

This is inspired by the juke in Make: Vol. 2, and all the great jukes here.  The PC is a 256M / 20 GB Celeron 433 running Win98 and Chris's WinCab Jukebox.  I hacked up one of the skins to cram 64 songs per screen, and reduce the number of buttons required for song selection (call me cheap).

Hope you like it, and / or it inspires you to create something yourself.

I drew up the plans myself, and intend to scan them and post them.  I'm certainly willing to make them available if there is any interest.

Sorry i have been a little behind in posting pictures for a few reasons beyond my control! Still working on getting labels in the buttons, getting, installing and wiring the led rope light to go in the front on the button panel/hidden keyboard section. I still have a few things to purchase, vibration cooling mount for the hardrive, 2 led conversion led lights for the triangle buttons, speaker insulation for the 2 15" speakers in the bottom and wire up all of the 110v connections. Still need to make a vibration mount for the cd/dvd drive and mount it. The card reader will have to have the wires lengthened with shielded wire to reach from one side of the jukebox to the other side to connect to the motherboard.

A friend and I are in the process of designing the lighting and circuit to go in the columns. We have some of the circuit worked out and new design on the lighting grid that will have led lighting that will have 64 squares for each module and 1 module will go on each side of the jukebox. These modules will be able to generate 4096 colors in each square and do all kinds of patterns and effects. These lights will operate from the computer with a coprocessor to control the lights. I still have some programming to do on the computer software to control the coprocessor.

I planned to have this done by newyears except for the lighting but didn't make it!

Enjoy the pictures and let me know what you think!

Thanks!

I know this may not appeal to everyone but i like feedback good or bad. Yes i think it came out better than ever expected when i started it and made alot of changes in the beginning. But i trust everyones opinion on the forum because it is what we are all interested in. A very good friend of mine didn't even give my hard copy pictures even a minute of time and i guess even though he is a big music nut it just wasn't what he is into, all he said was it looked a little big. I may have to agree with him on that but it ended up being that way in the beginning for a couple of reasons and i may look at down sizing the plans. I also believe if you put large furniture or an object in a small room it will look large, but if you put a small object in a small room it still looks small.

I have to thank everyone on the forums for great ideas that are being generated and members that are writing software, i think this is a great hobby and we can learn alot from each other. In the beginng what sparked me to build the jukebox was Virtual Music Jukebox and even though they have had some problems i think we all have to agree that they helped the hobby considerably and laid the path for the very best layout for a button controllable program.

Heh :)  It's on the menu to the left, "Submit Project" -- http://arcadecontrols.com/projectsubmit.php

If there's no menu to your left you're not technically on the main site, http://www.arcadecontrols.com/  which a lot of people do and don't realize there's more around.

Anyway, kudos on the jukes!

Spock,

Thanks for the nice comments.

Yes, I purchased the plans for $10 from VMJ.  I opted not to install speakers in the juke and run it to my sound system in my bar instead.  I also didn't add as many buttons as the plans called for.  The plans were great for overall dimensions and look, but didn't get into too much detail as far as how to mount the monitor, etc.  I had to "wing it" on a few things.  The plans may be better now, the ones I used are from 2 years ago.

Even if it takes a while to build go for the best look possible or you won't be happy.  I really love the look of the machine.  The first party using it people were offering me a few grand to build them one without blinking.

A few things I ran into, maybe it will help you:

1.  Venting the heat from the PC forced me to cut a hole on the top right side of the box and install a fan.  I thought about cutting vents into the top of the machine so heat would leave without a fan but I feared a beer might left on top might spill into the vent.

2.  I added a power button on the top right side turn on and shut down the box.   This is better for me than entering some code on the software to shut down the box.  It's also wife friendly so she doesn't have to know how to enter the code, etc.

3.  All of my songs are on a server in my office (easier to maintain the music collection) so the juke is hooked to a Cat5 network in the house.

4.  I used 1/2 pine to build the box.  That made fixing mistakes cheap (low cost wood) but since pine is a soft wood it gets dents and dings easier.

5.  I had a lot of parts already but I think I have $1000 tied up in the thing.  $350 for a new 15" flat panel monitor, maybe $500 for the PC parts and a hundred or so for buttons, wire, screws, paint, etc.  I never thought it be that much but then again I didn't plan a budget.

6.  I started with VMJ software but I use SK Jukebox now, much better!

If I think of more things I'll post them or feel free to ask.  I'll try to remember to take a picture with a better camera showing the guts of the machine,  which features bungee cords to hold the monitor.

later,
Steve

;D  Man you are good or maybe psychic, my main questions had to do with heat and how you were updating it (ie new songs software updates etc etc) and you answered that.  I am going to start on it this weekend and I may hit you up for some tips along the way
Thanks so much

Hi everyone.  I have a few pics of my jukebox in progress.  These are the first pictures I've taken, I know I've been lazy.

Anyway, I owe it to a few people who helped me out with suggestions, so here it goes.  Any questions or comments, please tell me.  I really don't mind people telling me if they think it looks ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

By the way, the colour dark blue with a black effect which is called marballising.  I didn't paint it, I got a friend who is a panel beater/painter to do it for me.

Anyway, here come the pics...

Has anyone seen this one before?

The site is in German but its a pretty basic yet slick design.
I was planning on doing something like it myself.  :)

Hi Gabypotter,

The software I'm using is called SK Jukebox, and I'm loving it.

As for the coin slot/selector, I have connected red to power +12V, Black to earth (both of these are connected to the PC power supply), and the only other one is the white wire which goes to the "coin1" of my IPAC2 from Ozstick.  I didn't bother about wiring up a counter, but you can with the extra 2 wires that are attached.

If you need any more help or tips, let me know, it would be a pleasure to help someone out.  I know it's hard and confusing at times on your first project (my first project anyway).  So feel free to ask away.

Ok, new member here, and my design is still in the "planning" phase, but it's only there becuase I'm not going to officially start it until I have all the parts I **think** I may need. Whenever you start a new type of project there's always SOMETHING you need.
Waiting on the ultimarc ipac4, and a power supply (12vdc), I haven't ordered either of them yet, but I need opinions and help.
I'm going to be running car amps, one 500 watt amp for the 12" rockford sub(bridged 250 actually) and a 100X4 amp for the two 6x9 kenwoods and the two 4" alpines: what should the MINIMUM amp power inverter I should buy? I've heard that I should  take my total max amps (in this case 50) and multiply by 1.5 (totalling 75) thus a 12vdc power inverter capable of 75 amps.  That seems like overkill to me, opinions?
Also, I'm planning on having a total of 6 fans on the case, 3 for draw, 3 for exaust, 21" monitor, 1.8 celron pc, 500 pc power supply, and I'll be running Silverjuke over winxp (stripped) not on a network, and not setup for anything but the juke. I might upgrade the onboard sound card (32meg 5.1 surround) but it's running smooth and sounds clear, so thats a secondary.

The pic below is the "finished" design, without the added 4" side firing kenwoods. This is a combined effort between myself and a good friend (we're both using the same cab design and frontend) that is 1900 miles away!
Hope you like the design, and any opinions or helpful hints would be GREATLY appreciated by us, since this is our first time building a cab. And yes, we're both well versed with wiring. (the control panel does look complicated doesn't it?)

Forever in progress. Its just something I built out of Particle board as a mockup for the real deal if I ever get to it. The holes in front are well to let sound out. Its not the final design, but its a small idea for you to look at if your bored.

Its currently 48-inches tall and 24-inches wide with a 45degree cut for the screen to lay like it does. As a matter of fact Im using it to type this.  ;D

I built mine a while back as a direct result of reading this thread!  I'm finally getting around to posting it.  I built it straight from the drawings provided by June, whose project is linked at the beginning of this thread.  Thanks June and June's husband!  I like the 80's look of the thing.  It houses an old IBM 500mhz running Win98 and SK Jukebox, which I love. The speakers are Logitech Z-340 computer speakers, refurbed on ebay for 25 bucks.  They are plenty adequate, even outdoors.  The numbered buttons are 1/2" momentary pushbuttons from Happs, with number stickers from Office depot on them.  The marquis my wife and I did on photoshop and had printed at Kinko's backlight film for $25.  Then spray-glued it to the plexi.

Nice Jukebox there kingflynn, I intend to use SK Jukebox on mine, just wondering other than the number and arrow buttons what other buttons did you go with? e.g next, cancel, pause etc?

SK jukebox is perfect for simple controls.  I wish my control panel looked more "commercial", but during a party, it is simple enough not to need a tutorial.  I have the number buttons for selections.  Next to those are two red buttons. One is "OK", to confirm a selection (it became irrelevant because SK has an option where you don't need to hit OK). And a button for clearing the last number entered.  The blue arrows scroll.  Then I have volume up, volume down, and a button for skipping to the next song.  I have never wished for any more buttons.

*I also put a sticker saying "Press Firmly" above the number buttons, because they have a lot of resistance and need a good push for contact.

Hi Guys,

Kingflynn, I also based my jukebox on the one made by June and her husband (thanks guys!), though as I started to cut it out I realised I needed to do quite a few things differently, due to several things.. The speakers I wanted to use being a major one. So in the end the only thing the same as theirs were the side panels, I made up all the rest as I went along.

It's nearly done now (painted and working). I just need to make up some artwork for the marquee and install my LEDwiz.. And maybe give it a bit of a polish (it's painted in 2 pak car paint and is very reflective :)

Here's a pic

Here's mine.  I run it from a laptop which can either sit on the base below the screen, or off someplace else.   I'd like to build a little drawer for it underneath the base but we'll have to see how that works out.   I contemplated hanging the laptop behind the monitor itself, and still miget go in that direction as well.   I built the wooden frame around the monitor and then discovered that the monitor had VESA standard LCD mounting holes in the back.  So I picked up one of these and mounted it.  I think it looks pretty sleek and I like it.

Currently I'm using the laptop's speakers, but I have brackets hanging off of the buttom of the screen's frame so I can hang some little logitech speakers.  Unfortunately, I'm using them right now on another computer :)

Actually...

Absolutely NOT ...for who would pay any attention to all the new jukebox designs/builds that way..

Better just let people update the thread as soon as they've something to show?

This will be my juke...kind of.  I don't plan on fully integrating a PC, out of respect to the radio.  But once I can financially justify a touchscreen monitor on a Windows-based laptop, that laptop will spend a lot of time connected to the speaker system I've got inside this "barn find" 1939 Zenith 12-tube "shutterdial".

I mainly want to avoid a dedicated PC and want to keep my power consumption as low as I can.

I love WinCab as my first choice for the software and I continue to work on a personal skin for that as I bide my time. For now I usually just connect an IPOD or my eee pc.  The wireless connectivity of that eee pc, combined with Pandora, works very well for casual listening.

Although all original electronics are still with the radio, it would need full restoration to play.  I'm "stewarding" it in the meantime and not doing any damage.  I've moved things aside and put in some dial lighting, a fake tuning eye tube made of a translucent film canister, some green cellophane, and a looseleaf paper tab.  And, of course, a decent set of computer speakers with subwoofer.

I had to repair a missing part of the base with two-part wood repair stuff and then painted that area black, symmetrically.  Mechanic's hand soap in a can cleaned up most of the finish pretty well, but I had to spray a little new lacquer on the most faded parts.  It was like 1/2 of the radio had been exposed to much more direct sunlight over a good part of its life.  If I can ever find the "before" picture, I'll add it here.  I came into possession of this about 11 years ago.

The shutterdial is pretty neat.  Moving the lever under the dial makes different layers of a clamshell open.   The AM dial and the outer ring were horribly crazed, peeling, and fading, but the two shortwave band dials that get revealed by the lever were not.

I scanned in the pieces and pixel-by-pixel rebuilt the AM dial and outer bezel and then printed them out on adhesive inkjet sheets and applied those, darkening the edges of those with a Sharpie.  This radio really has taken the place of our living room stereo.

So is it a jukebox?  Kinda sorta now.  Once I get a PC that I can easily connect running WinCab and SKJukebox and maybe even Freebox, I'll consider it as one.  Of couse, one genre I'm also fond of is old radio shows....especially 1930-40 musical/variety.   :)

I'll always admire the 100% home-built from the ground up stuff that people have done, but I think the effort I've put into this one is worth sharing here.

Scan of outer dial ring as I worked on it....   The AM dial clam shell was every bit as bad, if not worse.

How it looks up close now....

Based off of Cadis's machine. I don't have room for a large Juke, nor can I insert it into a wall (I rent), but this works well, for what I need.. and is probably just temporary until I have a house.

specs

15" elo touchscreen
Dell Dimension
Right now I have about 50 gigs of music (still collecting though, any suggestions of must have music let me know!)
I have the super cool volume control from powermate
Software is nordbeat.
Speakers are Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 speakers... They sound better than my suround sound! Awesome speakers!!!

Thanks shardian, the jukebox is for commercial use, the jukebox here that I think they are looking for family use, but it would be interesting to adapt the coin mech.

So is it a commercial product, or just illegally set up for pay use? It sure looks like a home brew build. It is pretty much exactly what I want for my gameroom. I am a coin-op addict and it has to run off of tokens for the true Juke experience.

It is for commercial use in a home brew, and is legally established and will pay royalties to the (International Federation of Phonographic Industry), of not paying royalties kidnap and destroy the jukebox, it's better this legal.

Agreed.  I spent the entire winter finishing my basement.  New walls, new tile, new carpet, new custom bar and everyone goes straight to the jukebox.  I think I could put the Venice de Milo down there and everyone would still go toward the music...silly lemmings.

They are actually called 'LuminDisk'. I guess they are not authentic plasma lights. If you search Lumindisk, you will find several sites that sell them for around $30 each. The stands you will see in the pictures are part of the light and cannot be removed. There is about an inch around the outer part of the disk that does not light up. I cut my holes to about the size of the part that lights up. I then applied liquid nail adhesive around the inside of the hole and stuck the disks to the inside. Then set the control to pulse if you want it to, or it can be constantly on.

I have the lights on a seperate switch, I usually turn them on when we have guests. You can get carried away with lighting in a hurry. I probably have a little over $100 in it.

BTW, they also make larger disks, but like I said, I was already over budget for lighting.  :burgerking:

I saw one in a pub using SK's Jukbox software yesterday. The paging of albums when you had the track view up was painfully slow.

Couldve been the video card affecting it - not powerfull enough?
I know i made a juke the other week and it only had 64Mb of video ram , and the page flipping was a bit slow.
I have a 256 Mb card in mine, and to flips nicely. (Had to go that high because of Frets On Fire is installed in my juke, too)

Page flipping was fine normally. It was only when you picked an album to see the full tracklist and then tried to page there. I think you are right it was probably just underpowered.

Some great looking stuff here... What is the average cost spent on building one of these including the PC?

The design is simple, clean and functional.  Very nice.  Is that part of a model plane over the speaker?

Thanks!  It's actually a hood ornament.  A reproduction 1955 Chevy Hood Bird.  I got it cheap on Ebay because the chrome isn't 'show quality'.  It worked nicely for this project.

Yeah I think his jukebox rocks. Gave me a few ideas that I might actually use and do my jukebox opposed to the box of junk sitting in my house. ;)

E-Touch - formerly known as Freebox! I use it also and I'm very pleased with it! ;D

Always updated and nice interface. Give it a try!

Fordman is correct.  E-Touch as of today.  Freebox prior to that.  The Freebox v4 demo got me hooked.  I was thinking about building a juke for a while and couldn't decide on buttons or a touchscreen until I tried v4.
