replacing cherry switch on super 8's....help?
« on: January 06, 2005, 11:00:19 am »
okay, so one of my supers on my cp is messing up.  i cant hit the left direction, so i thought, ill check the wiring, and then change the switch out.  well as most of you know, the switches on the buttons and the switches on the supers are different...mainly because of the little metal acuator.  so anyway, i want to change out that switch, but only have cherry switches for buttons.....can i use one of the push button cherrys to replace the supers cherry?

No, you can't.

Unlike some other joystick/switch combos, the levers on the super are hooked directly to the switch.
I'm assuming that you did actually check the wiring, and found out that the switch is bad?
If so, Bob Roberts sells the switches for $12.00/10 IIRC.

you got a pic so I can see exactly. But if i'm thinking correctly, the switches that is use in the joysticks has a METAL arm connected to it.
But if you at both switches (Buttons and the Joysticks), it is exactly the same except for the ARm piece. If so, I have done something like this. Break off the METAL ARM and place in one of your Button Switches. The BAD switch, just rip off the plastic piece thats holding the ARM and when you place this ARM in your NEW cherry switch, place it in carefully. You can actually widen the cherry switch just a touch tho. If you have too, with exacto knife, thin it out a bit or make a slit so you can just slip the ARM in then use BONDO or METAL/BONDO to cover the slit, but most likely during gameplay, the ARM will not fall off anyway, the switch is lying on its sides.
Hope that make sense...

Usually, I just pry apart the old switch, remove the metal piece, pry open the new cherry switch, (Just a little) to fit the metal piece in.

Most cherry switches have the indention for the piece, you just have to transfer it off the old one.

okay see thats what i tried to do.  i opened up another switch and stuck the metal piece in the same spot, but it wasnt "springing" like its supposed to.  like its supposed to be angled and rigid (heh..angled....rigid...*cough* ::)) so that the joystick hits it, but it springs back...well i took the metal piece off and put it in the new switch, but i couldnt get it to stay angled, it just kinda layed limp.  so what did you do to get it to stay angled?

Do you still need some of these?

I found 4 new BAOLIAN microswitches with the actuating arm in my box of goodies. If you want them, they are yours. I compared it to the switches on the bottom of some of my new SUPERS and they are the same with the exception of color (Cherry =white BAOLIAN=green) The spring tension appears to be about the same and did not notice any difference in the sound.
