ArcadeOS woes

Hello -

I am an AOS 2.52 n00b.  The program can't find the roms.  I've looked at, and modded, arcadeos.cfg and mame.cfg, and still cannot get AOS to find the rom folder.  I followed the manual instructions before and after the cfg file edit.

Any ideas what to look for?  I am sure it's something dumb I've overlooked.  Otherwise, I'll try another frontend...

BTW, if it helps, it's an old mame, 036b.

If you have your roms in a different folder than the \ROMS of the mame folder, it is near impossible to get ARCADEOS to find the roms... That was my problem. It easier to switch mame to look in \ROMS than it is to get ARCADEOS to look elsewhere.

AOS relies on mame.cfg for finding any files, so make sure that it's correct.

Did you solve this problem?  I'm having the same basic problem. But I'm using AdvMame .87 and AOS 2.52   AdvMame works 100%, but AOS will not find the roms unless I set "Unknown=1" in the config, then it finds them (shows me the count in the menu) but still displays no games.

I've moved the zips to different folders, even unzipped them and still nothing.  I posted a separate thread here (before I found this one).  Hopefully someone can help.  Is it a bug in 2.52?  I thought I had this working under 2.50 a few months ago with advmame!


Also should I put regular mame/mame.cfg in there and point AOS to mame.cfg instead of advmame.rc ??   would that help find the files at least? is that the only use of the config/rc??

I also got the same problem when i download Aos 2.52
It is not getting the gamelist,but it was good when 2.50
may be all of us are getting some thing wrong.
mame.cfg and other files are part of ArcadeOs,as i
told that we had it perfect in the past so it shold be more
advanced to produce a gamelist.

See my other post.   Either you dont have XML2INFO.exe in your directory with ArcadeOS or you have pulled a version from a windows build instead of a DOS build of Mame.

That fixed it for me.


However I find that ArcadeOS is very essoteric about things.  I understand it after a bit, but it is anything but intuitive, and some things purely arn't documented, or are, but arn't explained as to their purpose.

I wish more programs could work on arcade monitors.  THere are 2: ArcadeOS and AdvanceMenu

I really wish GameLauncher would work as its a nice clean interface, but no support for arcade monitors.

AdvanceMenu also is strange to me, feels too Unix-like rather than multi-select game hardware like.

Are you running AOS from within its own folder? I found that in my autoexec.bat I had to include this:

cd c:\arcadeos
arcadeos

If I didn't do this, it couldn't find the roms.

Yes, im running from the own folder and using the GO.bat to launch.

In my case, the problem was not pathing, it was soley the issue of wrong version of XML2info.exe

I still cant get sound to work without locking up the menu or mame.. gotta do more digging tonight.

Unfortunately it was built off an old version of AOS.  I think lots of things were fixed since 2.47 wern't they?

Use an older version of Mame.  I recommend .55 or possibly even .36

Have you tried the -tweak option?

And yes, SciTech Display Doctor may help with some resolutions.  Do a Google search for it, it's free now for personal use.  Especially since your video card is pretty old.

Again, it depends on what games you want to run.  Pac-Man?   What you have right now *should* be fine.  You mentioned Neo Geo, I wouldn't recommend anything slower than a 1 GHz machine for that.  

No, you don't need all that speed per se, but sometimes some of the games have high priority moments, ie a lot of action on screen at once.  This can have a serious lag, although just for a moment.  But that could be a crucial moment in gameplay!  And of course it just wouldn't look right if you suddenly had that slowdown.

The general rule of thumb is this: buy the fastest machine you can afford.  Then work the games you want to play into that setup.  No, you won't get all the games you want to play, but you'll get quite a few.  And you can always upgrade later on.

I am running DOS Advmame on one with a 766 Celeron and 196mg RAM.  It runs just fine playing NeoGeo and CapCom fighting games.  And this is with version 0.86.

I think I may have more problems.  I can run mame once then when I try to load another game, it just sits there.  It seems it doesn't even try to load the ROMset.

In my openion..do all setup within windows to use a GUI.
after set arcadeOS you can change  to DOS7.

As you told that you have so many problems...
i don't think that you will be able to solve them because ARCADEOS 2.52
is getting trouble with new users.
You should use another version of arcadeOs.
keep ask in a row for all of the problems.

If you're running a version of Mame newer than 0.83, ArcadeOS needs to know about it in order to create the gamelist.  Check your Legacy option in arcadeos.cfg

For Mame 0.83 and earlier:

For Mame 0.84 and later:

legacygen=0

This way ArcadeOS will know how to get the info it needs out of Mame, either by doing the old listinfo command, or the newer listxml command.

Thanks for the link.  I don't think my MAME problem is associated with ArcadeOS.  MAME seems to work fine the first time.  I get 59.XXX FPS.  It takes about 30 seconds for the game to load, but I figure that's because I'm using a PII 233.  After I exit the game and try to either load that one or another, it just sits there with a blinking cursor.  I have to reboot to get it to load another game. [edit] It doesn't lock up the computer or anything.  I have to ^C out of it and I can go about my business.

ArcadeOS will start with the startup sound and after that it's locked up.  I have to hard reset my computer.  I tried disabling the sound thinking it was a audio card problem, but it still does the same thing.

I'm using DMAME since I don't boot Windows.

I got ArcadeOS to run a couple of times at first.  It found all my games fine.  I even ran one from ArcadeOS, but for some reason after that it went kaput.  

[edit] I changed my legacy switch in the cfg.  It was set to 1 and I changed it to 0.  Do I need to delete my already generated list and have it rebuild?

It went through the list building process but still locked up after it started.  It also didn't display my games that I have on the system, so I'm presuming it didn't find them.  I'm going to run a scandisk to see if maybe the hard drive is flaking out on me.  Just seems odd that both MAME and ArcadeOS are not acting right.

[edit] Removed BLASTER settings from autoexec.bat and everything works like a champ.  Looks like it is my sound card after all.

[edit] Figured it out.  I fat fingered the IRQ on the blaster settings.  It's a wonder that mame would load at all.  It wasn't even a number.    Now to get ArcadeOS to see my games again.  Thanks for the tips every one.  Sometimes it just takes other people for you to look at something differently.

Perhaps a thermal failure?  Or maybe a hardware failure, that can happen.

Or even a config issue.  I was having lockup issues, until I discovered that it was due to using some odd VESA mode.  Once I stopped using VESA it hasn't done it since.

Yeah, it's hard for me to type on laptop keyboards.  Oh.. speaking of laptops, DON'T let your laptop hibernate while ArcadeOS is open.  It totally fragged the install and corrupted all sorts of files within the ArcadeOS directory.  I can't even delete the corrupted files.  Learning experience there.

One other thing.  I don't know if I missed a switch some where or maybe because I don't have any VGA drivers installed, but when I run ArcadeOS the list only dislplays in the top 3rd of the screen.  Maybe it's because the LCD screen on the laptop doesn't udnerstand something.  Don't know, just thought I would throw this out there.  Not like it hurts anything, but might make my backgrounds look funny if I choose to use them.

Why not do it in the mame ini?

Of course you can do it in the mame.ini, but some people may want to be able to change it in-cab.
