How long is your stick? :o
« on: June 08, 2004, 12:01:41 am »
I've been thinking for a little while about how I'm going to mount my t-stick plus with red balltop, and I've come to the conclusion that mounting it under the cp with t-nuts will make it a bit low...

My CP is 3/4" mdf, which I planned to route (sp) the bottom out to make 1/2" as I used in my experimentation, but it still seems too short.

As you can see in the attached pic, the top of the ball is only 2
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I mounted mine straight onto the bottom of my 3/4" CP, with the long balltops.
They are a bit low, but have a good Crazy Climber feel to them.

My Wico's are definitely taller.
I routed those 3/8", and did a bottom mount on them too.

Here's the drawing I did.  Yes I did it on cad and yes I have too much time on my hands.  :P

BTW I've also considered extending the bracket top and bottom, adding 4 more bolts and having it mount more like a TB mounting plate.

i would definitely route that. mine is plenty strong enough at 6mm which in biblical terms is 1/4 ". It doesnt feel too short to me but then im used to shortish sticks anyway so i dont notice the extra 6mm. the aluminuim was just to give something nice for the vinyl contact to stick to but i guess it would strengthen it a little...
just had a thought though. you could just do a shallow route on the top side, cut a large hole for the joy to sit in and skin it in ali like mine. then the effect would be the same as if the joys were mounted to a metal panel. drawback would be the wacky shaped hole youd have to cut i guess.
you could just make it from metal...

crashwg: Do you have the 'long' or 'short' balltop stick?

It doesn't look too bad to me, maybe route 5mm or so if you think it will bother you.

A quick off-topic question Danny,

What did you use to drill through the aluminum?  Was it just a standard hole saw or did you use a forstner bit?  I checked your website, but you don't say specifically.

Is that 7" from the ground ?  :D

Mine is barely touching the ground. I had to tuck it DOUBLE to stay away from TROUBLE.  ;D

Sorry, I obviously can't answer this for Danny but...

I have just been making an aluminium CP for my analog controls, and used a hole punch (or Knockout as I believe they are commonly known) for button holes.  Oscar swears by Greenlee punches, although I only bought a cheap one as a) I don't need to make many holes and b) I couldn't find any better ones in the UK anyway...  The punch worked superbly  ;D

I used a good quality hole saw, which sort of made up for my bad quality hole sawing! Doing that meant I could put the ali in place and saw through both ali and MDF at once. The holes are a bit rough on the ali but cant be seen when switches are in. joystick hole was with drill bits. Drill small hole first and then progress two or three sizes to final size

Well, my GF doesn't seem to have any problems with the height of the stick, so... I guess I'll be routing the bottom of the cp out

this was the cheap and dirty solution i came up with.
yes, its stuck underneath with epoxy.
it hasnt really ruined the joystick. if i want to re-use it properly its not a big deal to get all that crap off again.

summary. i think it depends on the size of your hands
