Hi all.

As the year (2018) draws to an end, it means one project is ending and another begins. Bit of history...as I no longer work with the tools anymore but teach others in the electrotechnology sector, I try to build a project each year to scratch that itch. This year, it has been a virtual pinball, last year a 4.8m sailing dinghy, the year before a pedestal arcade unit.

Next year (2019) is the year of the Jukebox...even though I have already begun some preliminary work. REALLY looking forward to this one! I love my music and it will be a great addition to a growing retro man cave.

My plan, as with previous builds is to incorporate a little old school with a bit of new.

I would really like to replicate the look of a Seeburg USC 1 or 2

Not sure I do this to scale yet as I have scaled a few pictures of them to get some rough dimensions and the components I have already purchased (more of that in another post) may not allow it. We'll see. This build will be full size.

Anyway, I have just about got the software working just the way I want it...but that can wait for another post also.

It would be ridiculously expensive but super cool if you made the top of the jukebox a big touchscreen.

Some of the components I have for the build include:

An LG 34" 21:9 ultrawide monitor (34UM95-P) This was left over from when I closed down a business. Great resolution and nice size for this project. Not touchscreen, but I want buttons for an authentic look anyway.

A set of Jensen SPX-7 Millennial Speakers (From the days that Jensen made quality gear...circa 2000). Picked up second hand, these sound really good. They may have to be cut down slightly if I want to build a Seeburg USC lookalike though.

A Yamaha RX-V540 Amplifier

A Yamaha YST-SW305 Subwoofer

I actually purchased the sub, amp and two Yamaha speakers a week ago for the bargain price of $100 and then sold off the speakers for $120 so effectively I got the amp and sub for free plus $20.

I have tested the sound on many genres of music and it passed the test with flying colours. That sub really knocks out the bass and is more tuned for music as opposed to movies.

Here is a bit of a washed out screen pic of the software I am customising for this build. Playing around with some concepts at the moment (very much in its infancy). I will have to remove the letters O and I as jukeboxes don't use them to avoid confusion with the numbers 0 and 1. The monitor I am using is 820mm wide (32 inches) so it will fill the space nicely and at 3440x1440 it zings.

Those cards are pics of an actual card that I graphically cleaned up. The program fills the cards in automatically with your songlist. I'll take some hi-res pics as the build progresses.

It currently shows 144 songs on every page and the pages turn at the click of a button (with sound effect). The software also has a nice vinyl crackle for the first few seconds of each song.

I used DWJukebox for the software as it is completely customisable (and free).

Nice. I'm planning to do a Jukebox build next as well based on a Rasperry Pi with rpi-fruitbox and a Hifi Berry hat.

So I'm working on some scale diagrams at the moment. I scoured the web and the only dimensions I can find are length, width and height. Also no drawings either, only pictures which are very difficult to scale to due to the camera angle, lens etc. Relying on pics and Youtube videos unfortunately.

The issue with these jukeboxes is that they have two main speakers right at the bottom, with a very small opening for sound and a large panel of glass above. I really want to open that area up a bit if I can to improve the sound. Would be easier to build something else, but the missus has her heart set on this model.

Here is a side view of a crude attempt to scale. Once done, I'll set the photocopier up to print it out full size.

Lucky I'm not starting this project till 2019

The two speakers in the bottom, aren't they just the woofers?
I.e. I assumed that there are tweeters and mid-range speakers in the upper part (between the selection panel at top and the disc labels) .
For the lower bass you don't need that much openings. If it is a vented enclosure the port openings is quite complex thing to calculate as well - if you want it to be right with frequencies and gain (however not that hard when you know what you are doing and got the correct formulas).

Jennifer has a few of those jukes, and would be of the opinion you could simply move the speaker panel back a bit and enlarge it for whatever sized speaker you wanted if your heart is set on that....However by design they were built that way to add external speakers, BIG ,heavy subs and multiple mids as to spread the noise around the club....And possibly minimize space to add a receiver for wall mounts.

Had a few design issues with it. Changed designs more than once, but kept coming back to it. All steam ahead from here. The build begins.

Slowly taking shape. More photos coming. I have adjusted the software and changed the speaker arrangement, including a quality centre speaker set among other things. Anyway more to come. Not a great deal of detail here as it's not even a box at this point.

I had to re-read the thread as I liked this so much. The software looks great. I cannot wait to see how it turns out. I am guessing you will make use of some RGB LED strips? You could make it looks very cool and retro. Can't wait to see it completed.

That’s a lovely shape and some very fine woodworking sir.

I’ve been trying to design an arcade in that shape for ages and couldn’t make it work. The accent piece inside the curve looks great and ties it together great

I will be adding some LED, but not over the top. The Mrs has claimed this jukebox as her Christmas present. Not sure she realises how much more work is involved here before it is finished. Anyway, here is a bit more progress. I'll let the pics do the talking at this stage of the build. Happy to take feedback and/or answer questions though.

Got a bit more done. More filling of holes, more shaping etc.

Also got to build the centre speaker box which will lift the sound up off the floor. Love the quality in the old Jensen millennial series speakers. Don't make them like they used to. Speaker grill also arrived. I am using colourbond metal. It's actually a piece of gutter guard to stop leaves entering your gutters. I'll need to spray it black. Due to the pattern, you won't actually see through it unless you are at floor level. Pics below.

So I made a control panel vector this week and had it laser cut to size including all the necessary holes. One panel is clear, the other is a lightbox opaque colour. I will be placing a translite between the two pieces and illuminating the underside for effect. The VU panel meters are a perfect fit.

I'm not trying to copy the old 1970 USC1 jukebox entirely, hence the VU's. Pics below.

Not doing this anymore. Going for an original look.

This is so cool I don't know where to start. I wasn't really interested in building a juke until I saw yours.
I always like organic lines on things and this is awesome.

Is that MDF you used for the front facing panels with the arc in it? How thick is it?

I struggled to bend the ply so yeah, I went 3mm mdf but braced it with timber every 200mm to get the curve perfectly even.

Getting curves right is really difficult. And those look about perfect.
