Any 4 Player LCD cabinet examples?
« on: April 15, 2015, 01:51:56 pm »
I'm looking to make a cabinet that is more on the thin (shallow) side using a ~24" LCD. But I'm also wanting it to be a 4 player cabinet, which means it's going to need a pretty wide control panel. Are there any cabinet examples out there similar to this?

There are several in the project announcements forum. Chance's Flynn's arcade is a good example.

IMHO, 24" seems to be on the small side for a 4 player cab - especially if you are running any non-widescreen games. The effective screen size for games with a 4:3 aspect ratio would be around 19". That's a pretty tiny display for four people to crowd around. We're building a 4 player cab and the control panel is around 48" wide because I hate rubbing shoulders while playing games.

I have a 23.1" 4x3 LCD I'm going to be using. No Widescreen. It still might be too small though. Not sure.

well,
you do have TMNT plans on your site & that used a 25" monitor.

25" CRT = 20" x 15" real-estate.
23" LCD = 18.4" x 13.8" real-estate.
according to displaywars.com

Considering the actual view-able screen of a CRT varied I don't think it would be a big deal.

I didn't know they made 4:3 lcd screens that big.

While this monitor would be big enough, it won't perform as well as modern LCD TVs and computer monitors. The contrast will suck, it won't be as bright (meaning you can't put it behind tinted glass to hide LCD flaws) and it will ghost like crazy. Response time will seriously suck and when you add that in to all the built-in MAME and controller interface lag that all setups have, you're probably looking at five frames or more of input lag.

I can understand wanting to keep the budget down but I'm not really sure why anyone would want to put a thirteen year old LCD in their cabinet when LCDs panels have improved like mad over the last five years.

Actually I've played with it a ton and it's not bad at all. In fact it's really really nice.

With the weight and depth of a 4 player cp, I always worried about it tipping if I went too shallow.  I suppose if you made it to secure to the wall it would be OK though.

or just put something heavy in the bottom, like weight bench plates or something.
