LEDBlinky + LED-Wiz... will this do what I want?
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:29:30 pm »
I watched a video demonstrating the Howler PCB, but I think it was actually demonstrating LEDBlinky.  I want a system where the buttons will light up depending on which game I have selected in Mame, which from what I gather, LEDBlinky does.  I only need LED-Wiz to handle the actual LED lighting/power?  What exactly does the Howler PCB Board do then? Its a combination keyboard controller and LED board?  I already use 2x GP-Wiz40 or whatever they are called so I don't really need another KBController.

So my question is, will getting LED Buttons, LEDBlinky software, and LED-Wiz, allow me to custom light buttons depending on which game I am playing?

thanks

So if I want to have 20 buttons lit with RGB, do I need to have 60 outputs to control?

yes, 60 outputs, 80 connections.

I did 30 buttons plus trackball for a total of 93 outputs.. used the ipac ultimate which has 96 outputs and have enough for one more RGB or 3 more individual, lol.. that's a LOT of wires.

What do you mean by 80 connections? EDIT: Oh you mean 20 additional ground wires, right?

Each LED-Wiz is 32 outs, so I can get two, for a total of 64 outputs, of which I'll use 60 (rgb for 20 buttons), and maybe somepoint down the line light up coin buttons or something for the remaining 4.  Will I need anything else? Additional power supply or is USB power enough?

I can't answer the power supply question because I don't use the LEDWiz.  But yes, the extra 20 connections are ground (or +5v, depending on the type of LED).

Well, I pushed the button (bad pulled the trigger pun).  20 Electric Ice 2 buttons with the Helio9 LED's, two LED-Wiz's, and some terminal connectors to clean up the grounding wires.  Now we wait, anxiously.. very very anxiously.

They would be +5v wires.  Pretty much all RGB LEDs used in this type of application will be common anode, AKA +V.  Just wanted to make this clear to save folks from needing to re-wire things if they get it wrong :)

As you will be using 20 of the Helio9's, you will definitely need external power (i.e. from your PC supply.)  But I think you will find them to be well worth that little extra effort when you see how bright and colorful they are, even in a well lit room. ;)
