Thanks Richie. It will be predominantly for PC sims but I may look at hooking it up to a console at some point.

Thanks very much for the feedback  I hope this thread has proven useful for sharing some ideas. I'm just on a brief hiatus at the moment whilst I wait for the button box to arrive and will be providing more updates as I tackle the dashboard panels.

Grand Tourismo ... there's a thought. May need to move the PS3 in here at some point.

Good progress on the wall rack:

Just need to tidy the top and bottom up, trim the hangers at the back and glue in place

Cheers Superfrog

I may actually replace the start button with something else mattgold but yes, I'm always up for a bit of customising!

That's correct ChanceKJ. I'll be removing the buttons, switches, rotaries and control board to fit to the dashboard panels. It was actually pretty cost effective to buy this so I could then tear it apart :) Import duty was nil also - always a bonus.

I love this build (still)  How much was the Derek Speare Designs P1, if you dont mind me asking.

Also, what wheel are you using? I glanced through the thread but I just kept staring at the pictures and not reading as much as I should of.

Thanks Malenko. The P1 was $100 which includes international shipping. There was no duty to pay (because of the stated cost on the package) or handling fee so that was welcome. I was anticipating having to pay that.

The wheel is a Fanatec CSW base with interchangeable, quick release rims. The rims are made of metal with alacatra.

Base:

Formula Rim:

BMW replica Rim:

They've also recently announced a modular wheel system with 6 other rims available. Basically, you can configure the wheel to your needs (button clusters are removable/adjustable) and allow you to use a smartphone for the display (a smaller display is included with the wheel system with the smartphone attachment optional):

I have a Fanatec CSR Forza (NOT ELITE!) and its pretty great with emulators. Love that belt driven force feedback

Now that all the parts and materials have arrived, I've got myself together to make some more progress on the panels. The left panel will have 4 toggle switches, 4 rotary switches and 2 Neutrik USB ports. The right panel will have an 2 toggle switches (one with a missile switch cover), an engine start button, 4 momentary contact push buttons and 2 Neutric USB ports.

Left panel covered with carbon fibre (USB ports need to be screwed in):

Progress on the toggle / rotary switches:

The wiring is complete. In the process of fitting and tidying. The cables are a mess but everything is secure (hot glue all over the place :) ) and working. I've also done a little more work in the wheel stem - the blanking plate at the front will be re-fitted.

Full frontal:

Really pleased with how this has turned out.

Just need to wait for some retaining blocks to dry to allow me to fit the last screw in each of the panels. Also need to epoxy the blanking plate underneath the wheel.

Thanks BadMouth

They're 16 position. I'm intending to use them for brake bias, power/turbo level (if Assetto Corsa implements support for it), seat position and possibly field of view.

On the wishlist:

3 screens
New graphics card
Buttkicker LFE (the BIG one)
Another Buttkicker BKA 1000 Amplifier
Android tablet

Better start saving ...

I'm still planning on making a few peripherals - an iPhone holder to display additional info. It'll attach to the wheel base (there are bolt holes to allow extra items to be attached) and connect to one of the ports using a coiled USB cable:

Another port is being used for a wireless dongle for keyboard and mouse. I'll attach a headhphone charger to a third when necessary. The last one is for expansion, probably an android tablet.

:P  I'm just kidding, this build is amazing. I'd give my left nutt to be able to use this to race up Eau Rouge at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps with the formula wheel on.

I had never really wanted to build a cab for racing games - until I saw this!

Thanks Speed Racer!

One of my objectives was to build something a little out of the ordinary when it comes to racing rigs; there are many which understandably put function before form but I wanted something a little more aesthetically pleasing.

On another note, I tried to build an iPhone holder for the wheel base last night. Not quite a disaster but not what I was after so it's back to the drawing board ...
