.....horizon, so I wouldn’t expect to see much before April or so next year。

did you just have an 8-bit seizure?

on note, I love paperboy and have never played it on an arcade cabinet with the weird handlebar joystick. love this project!

With all due respect, if you have never played it on a dedicated cabinet with the handlebars then you have never played it. Absolutely a must.

Yeah it's pretty much impossible to play properly without the handlebars

Used to play a lot of Paperboy back in the day. I'd love to get my hands on one. One day!

Time to dust off this thread and start getting focused on this job, I've been jonesing for time to get started on this and it's finally here. This weekend I plan to get started into the wood and get this puppy looking straight and clean.

I plan to completely strip the cab down to it's bare bones and tag n bag everything, then go at the wood removing all vinyl and old paint that's flaking or rough, bubbling etc.

Anyone got any tried and tested tips they want to share on particleboard ding repairs? I see some guys using wood hardener, that;'s not something I have ever used before, is that for moisture damaged wood?

Looking forward to this one. One of my favorite games. It was cool seeing it in your garage, patiently waiting it's turn.

Besides the wood, you were having monitor issues, correct?

Yeah man it's the original monitor, currently it doesn't fire up when the game does, no buzz or hum from the tube or gun, first thing I am going to do is hose the control board and monitor down with water to get all the old dust and junk off. Could be a cracked solder on the board, might be 28 years of crap, probably both and then some.

This would be really cool to see in a sit-down version... with working bike pedals, to control the speed.

Maybe someone could build a custom converter board, to translate pedal speed into analog pot values.  Or maybe some sort of mechanical or air pressure thing... for direct transmission.

A ringing bell on the handlebars.  Tire Spoke noise maker.  Analog controlled air blower to simulate wind. Possible terrain simulation, with random vibrations.  Pre-recorded bike sounds?  or just using the bikes assembly as is.

Lol that was an explosion of fun ideas. I have to admit I have thought of adding the bike frame and pedals for speed.

Picked up some history on this cab over at KLOV last night, turns out one of the members there liberated it from some guys garage after 10 years of sitting doing nothing. Great news for me as that means a lot less wear and tear on the controls and hardware.

Stripping it down you can see that cab has hardly seen a drop of moisture in its 29 years of life

Removed the handlebars and took a look at the gearing, it looks to be in great condition, no need for new cogs or springs

Looking at the coin counter the history seems to line up with the numbers, pretty light use

Coin mechs are all in great condition, the doors need some refinishing but again very very light wear and tear

So far so good :))

Um, Kirk, you don't have any coin mechs. ;)

If you plan on coin op use, might try to track down a coin bucket too (unless you've got one that just isn't pictured).

It's nice you don't have to worry about moisture issues.

Neph's right about the missing coin mechs. If you want some used $25 ones, let me know and I'll send you a couple.

Looks like you'll need an Atari bucket like so:

Only know this because the Beast has two, and your bucket cutout in the cab looks just like the Beast's.

I've decided I'm going to use Electro-magicalness to clean up any rusty or corroded metal bits from the cab and then repaint them. This is more for my own education as I have never used a proper spray gun or done any electro-cleaning before so I'm quite excited to give it all a try.

Going to use a plastic planter 30"x8"x7" as my bath, line the edges inside with plastic gutter shielding to prevent any shorting between my sacrificial metal and my pieces that are being treated. Some cheap steel rods dotted around the edges between the bin edge and the gutter shield, secured with little 2" clamps above the solution line, daisy chained together for the positive anode. Then I'll just dump in the old Arm & Hammer cleaning soda solution and suspend the pieces to be treated in it from the negative anode using a car battery charger for my 12v DC current.

I can pick up an old Binks spray gun for $25 on CL and there's always someone selling or trading a compressor which is something I have been meaning to pick up for a long time. I'll post pics of course when I do all this, just getting it all out of my head and down here to stay organized.

Thanks, the further I get into the cab the more I'm realizing how well its preserved.

They don't make em like they used to...

Unfortunately all the game boards here aren't from the original #34 cab and have been replaced by a 1985 board set #UR01130, still they look fantastic.
