Coffe table arcade machine - how many buttons?
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:16:44 am »
Hi, I'm in the middle of a coffee table build (complete with motorised controls drawer)  ;D

Noob Question: I'll be mainly using it for the classics (space invaders etc)and snes games. How many buttons? I assume 4 buttons for the snes... is that enough for the rest? Or is it more for things like street fighter?

thanks

For fighters you'll need up to six. Depends how much you'll play them. Some people love them, personally I don't. If you want SNES support then I'd go with a Neo-Geo type layout of four buttons. Keep it simple and clean as possible. Cramming in buttons to support fighters is only worth it if you gonna play them.

You'll need more than 4 buttons for the SNES.

Honestly, I wouldn't use over 3.  Maybe even go as low as two.

The kind of games that I would play on such a setup would be sort of parlor games.  Maze games like pac-man and classic vertical shmups.  Donkey Kong.

When I think of a coffee table I think of a sort of refined atmosphere.  Simple games that can be played for high scores in a few minutes.  Almost all of those games use one button, a few use two.

One joystick, one button, and one spinner?

I struggle with the same question (minus the snes consideration.)

One of my favorite games has me flummoxed...

DEFENDER
needs five buttons.   :hissy:

Searching for Zwackery, not because it's rare, because it's fun.

Exactly! I'm thinking of 7 or 8 in two rows. I might not use them all but if I need them then they are there!

thanks
