Thanks guys! MC, my wife shot a pic of what I've been working on to a gf of hers and she texted me that same meme. Oddly enough I looked at the rubbermaid 18" bullet trashcans as a possible source for the body before I bent my own.
So I'm looking forward to the CP. The shape is a bit odd for how one usually sees CPs but I think there will be some advantages to it. More on that later. What I've got stuck in my craw now is the classic button conundrum. How many and what layout.
Here's the deal, I don't want buttons that aren't being used to be on the CP and I don't want duplicate buttons. It's the grail I'm after. You pick a game and the right buttons in the right layout appear on the CP. Eventually I think we'll get to this with haptic button morphing tech but that's a ways off from the home builder. I'm thinking about actuating six individual buttons. That way I can have none or all present and somehow get them into the SF layout, NeoGeo layout, MK layout, and then neat lines of two and three. I'd probably have to actuate 8 so I can get the middle button in the MK layout and the fourth on the Neo Geo - otherwise the layouts are too complicated as I'd have to have buttons moving in three directions rather than just one.
I can see how the underside of the panel would look but I'm having trouble visualizing a clean solution for the top. I don't want a bunch of plugs in the CP all the time, rather a smooth surface. Maybe I could toss some kind of weird homage to X2's roll-up control panel and have a 7 sided motorized Rolodex but that seems like a waste of so many duplicate buttons and it would probably be ginormous.
This probably won't see the light of day but when I get a concept in my head that doesn't go away I have to at least see it through far enough to rule out feasibility or figure out how to make it work. I'd love to hear your suggestions on how to make the ultimate idiot-proof CP.
