Mounting trackball (PS2 paradisearcadeshop trackball)
« on: May 07, 2012, 04:38:33 pm »
I ended up purchasing a cheap trackball for my cabinet for some basic games like centipede and marble madness earlier today. I am sure several people have seen this one:
http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/en/joysticks-trackball/47-ps2-led-trackball.html

Here is my control panel. The acrylic is 1/8" thick. I am concerned that the track ball will not protrude out high enough. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could mount this baby so it looks nice? It does not seem to be compatible with your typical trackball plates either.

I have one of these TBs under a 2mm acrylic CPO and it fits nice and flush with the lip around the ball. The 3mm, 1/8", won't cause a major issue

Sp basically route out the bottom of the CP to 1/8 . ok What about the size of the hole for the ball and what type of bolt did you use to mount housing to the wood. Any pics of installation

Not for anything but your cab is very nice. I think you should go with a better arcade trackball with mounting hard ware it might be double the price but if you think of how you spent already another $100 is well worth it

I only plan on playing with the trackball occasionally. My cp is not deep for bowling and golf. If I ever do want to have a nice trackball, I'll make a second cab.

Route the underside down to only 1/8" thick? I would think the wood would give out after a reasonable amount of pressure.

I think I understand what you're talking about. Something like this (in combination with BobA's post:

You have a very sharp looking cab right now.  Given your wood panel without artwork, I think a visible mounting plate is your only option with that ball, which may not look so great.  For what it is worth, I vote you pick up a Utrak, drill a 3" hole and call it a day.

If it were me, I'd get a piece of metal, either square or circle, paint it black, and mount the trackball to that and then put it under the acrylic so it goes with the black surrounds you have around the joysticks. Of course you'd need to route the top of your cp down the thickness of the metal but I'd feel safer than routing the wood down to 1/8.

I think eds1275 has it right - on the plus side the trackball you have is very compact, so the mouting plate should be pretty small, you may even be able to closely match the dimensons/feel of the joystick plates.  Put it on the "red" rgb setting and it could still look very nice.

I think I will route underside. That requires too much precision and work to route it from the top.

I will try a sample piece of wood, route it down to 1/8", strap it in, and see how stable it is.

Are you familiar with this trackball? Is there some switch on the unit? From looking at the PCB, It looks like I will have to resolder the LEDs.
