Spy vs Spy Control Panel

Hey guys, Having Just finishing up my last project I've decided to make some changes on my old Arcade cab. I never liked the buttons on the old panel, so i wanted to change them out for some IL concave buttons. Thats all I set out to do, but then some ideas popped in my head and all I can say is "here we go again"! My first thought was I wanted to do a black and white theme, and then I thought, what would be a cool theme in black and white. This is where "Spy vs Spy" comes in. So I ran the idea past my buddy who does the artwork for me, and so far it's starting to take shape. We're just some trouble coming up with some ideas for the background, and thought this would be a great place to ask for some advice or thought's on whats good and what needs to be different. So I'll post a pic of what we've got so far, and I'll wait to hear what you guys think. Thanks!

I personally liked the Spy vs Spy without the Gray Spy, she always won. I really like this art. I'd say keep the Spy vs Spy logo straight on instead of angling each "spy", and make it more pronounced. Maybe a outline instead of drop-shadow.

Same here. You should think about adding them to a favorites list on your machine even if you don't already have the C64 set up on your machine. (I know it came out for NES and some other systems as well, but the C64 version was really good IMO and the C64 also had Spy vs Spy 2 and 3 which were not bad either.

I was a fiend at those games, 1 and 2. Never played 3, but I liked how the first one led into the second one [escape in a plane, get shot down and stranded on the island]

I would lose the M.A.M.E. thing, reminds me of the old batman... Shark Repellant, Bat Computer, etc.

Yes he was. Thanks for noticing! Even if I decide not to use it on the cp, I think I'll use it for the marquee.

I actually wasn't even thinking about the game when I came up with the idea. But I do remember playing the Nes version when back in the day. I never new the other games existed! I'll have to check them out now though.

Yeah, I really like it too. When I decided to go with this theme, I was dead set on not using any colors at all! My buddy said it would really be cool to have hints of red throughout! I'm glad I listened to him because having that red in the logo makes it really pop. I'm also thinking about a red trackball. What do you think? Oh, and for the controls I was obviously thinking black buttons and ball top on one side, and white on the other.

Man how did I not see that? MAD magazine was something I wasn't allowed to read as a kid, so naturally I tried my best never to miss an issue! Now that I see the connection it fits so much better!

I like buttons2 or buttons 3. But I think you can get rid of the button nearest the joystick for each player. I guess it depends if you are going to use emulators that require 8 buttons. I don't think there are many mame games that people actually play that use more than 6 buttons.

2, 3, or 4.  I'm not sure the MAME logo helps since it sorta clutters up the top of the buildings.  I'd probably leave that for the marquee if it were me.

It's a shame that you are puttin 8 buttons per player cause that forces the bomb and dynamite to get covered.  If it were me, I'd probably eliminate those buttons and shift P2 to the right so the image looked better.

Looks great though!

Definately number 4...the MAME thing doesn't really do anything. The Spy vs Spy text on the other hand does. Go with number 4.

If you go with the MAD stuff instead of sticking to strictly Spy vs Spy,
I'd like to see "What, Me Worry?" worked into there somewhere.  :)
(I always bought CRACKED because I had to be different)

In all honesty, I think it look better if limited to Spy Vs Spy.
....off to youtube to look up the cartoon from MAD TV.  :P

I like that idea better than what I had in mind. I was just gonna do white on black and black on white.

If you add that, you have to add Alfred.  I don't think their paths ever crossed much (except maybe a cover or two).

I vote for 4.  I think the MAME or the MAD clutters it up too much but the Spy Vs. Spy logo somehow adds to it.  I also vote to remove the TAB button, but that's not what you're asking.  Also maybe lost a pair of buttons for each set and you'll get more of the artwork.

Great suggestion on the buttons... and I agree about covering up the bombs.  I might see how it looks without the bombs since they're largely covered.

Either way... this is looking great. :)

Looks good, but I don't think all of the windows need to lit. Leave some off to make it look more natural. Of course, this may look odd, but I think you should do it to see how it looks.

Ok guys, Here is the a pic of the final adjustment. Thanks for all of the input/feedback on this. It really helped out alot! :applaud: Feel free to add any last comments, or  last minute changes you might think I need to make.Thanks again! Oh I almost forgot, I should point out that the buttons will be setup like Nephasth suggested with the black plungers in the white barrels and vise a versa. Does anybody know if they make white dust covers?

I may be late to the party, but I think Spy vs. Spy would look better at the top with MAME stuff smaller and at the bottom to draw attention to the theme.  But this is a great theme and I dig what you've got going there.

I like this revision of the black and white spy much better. The shading looks more natural, and giving them more of a flesh tone really looks a bit nicer.  :cheers:

As far as a white dust washer goes, I guess you can make your own, possibly take some white acrylic plastic, attach it on the end of a drill, and spin it against a sander.

FrancoB used to sell custom cut ones, don't know if he's still in it but shoot him a PM, couldn't hurt.  Also check out the fight stick boards like shoryuken forums because they have a lot of specialty stuff like that for their wee fight sticks.

Thanks for the info on the dust washers. I'm still going to use the Spy vs Spy logo somewhere on the machine, just don't know where yet. Maybe on the bezel, of above the coin door.

Hey guys, it's been a while since my last update so here ya go. These first couple of pics are of the old cab sanded down a little. I never was really happy with the original paint job.

Here I have the white side done, and the inside of the control panel is painted white. I'll have black corner brackets on the inside, so's to keep with the theme.

Painted my old spinner from blue to black. This will get a red vinyl decal that says VS and go between the spy -- spy on the panel.

HS is fine, I just don't see why anybody would want the name of the FE on their cab.  What if something better comes out?  Also, it doesn't really go with the theme.  I used to rock a "MAME" art cab a long time ago (my first) and now kinda cringe when I see them.

Whenever I see the Mame logo on a cab it remonds me of the old Batman movie where in the helicopter they keep a clearly-marked bottle of Shark Repellant.

Nep, if they were all in the same class as yours I wouldn't have anything to complain about.  Be safe in the knowledge that you are the exception and not the rule.  Now untwist those panties and finish up so you can get nominated for the '12 awards.

Here's a little update on where I'm at. when I was cutting my plexi I must have cracked it!  :cry: So I can't wire anything up until I order a new piece. I was going to order a piece of smoked plexi for the bezel anyway, it just sucks all that drilling for nothing! This is my fifth time cutting this stuff and never had a problem before. Oh well, enjoy the pics anyway.

I like alot about this (though I agree with Chuck about the marquee), but the handle on the keyboard drawer (I assume that's a keyboard or other type of easy access drawer) distracts me. Are you going to put a lock on it? I could see curious people opening that up and causing a lot of issues.

Yeah that drawer is for the keyboard. When I built the original cab I just had to have it. To take it out was more work than it was worth, so I just kept it. And I know what you guys are saying about the marquee, but I didn't want to personalize this cab too much. Incase I ever decide to sell it, it should appeal to someone looking for a MAME Arcade Cab. Besides, I think the MAME logo looks cool dressed up like the MAD logo!

A little update. I just got my button art back and it looks awesome on the panel! I screwed up on my bezel art so I had to have it reprinted. :banghead: Should have it any day now.

How in the hell have I not seen this thread before?!?  Great idea, clean artwork, and well implemented.   I really like how you did the player buttons on each side, reversing the buttons and their outer rings. That is a really cool detail.

If I had one suggestion, it would be on the marquee. The rest of your art is so sweet, but that just doesn't look as good as the rest of the cab to me. I would do something in the same design vein as your control panel with buildings or something, darkened enough to where they don't distract, and a big ol spy vs spy logo. Maybe slap an "Acade" below it or something.   I think that would do your control panel justice and keep the theme going throughout the cab.   Something similar in your FE would be sweet as well.

My 2 cents. Kick ass work!

My bezel art came in today. This is a shot of it without my smoked plexi on yet. The last pic is of my VS art on the spinner top. Now I need to wire everything up and tighting up a few loose ends.

Look closer at the marquee, there are buildings! It's funny Shaner that you mentioned the marquee, because your marquee inspired me to do mine. Did you ever get those green stools I suggested?

That is too funny spk, I hadn't noticed somehow. I still think it needs spy vs spy on it instead ;-). It already looks awesome so no loss either way, but it would just send it over the top I think. If you want to hook me up with your AI or psd files, I'll take a stab at it for ya.

No, those stools were awesome, but a little over the top. I'm partial to the standard ol black top bar stool. There is a special place in my butt for them.

Well guys, just got in my bar stools and for me its the icing on the cake. Its like they were made for this cab. Just a few more odds and ends to finish up and this cab is done. So i want to take a minute and thank everyone who shared a thought or suggestion. beautifully done!   Love the artwork and the overall theme, just everything.   I played Spy vs Spy on the C64 a TON in my youth as well!
