Will this burn my apartment complex down? Mains Separating
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:17:17 pm »
I just wrapped some electrical tape around the mains cables and stuck them to the back of the dust cover. Is this acceptable short term and long term?

Use marrettes/mar connectors/wire nuts. They are safe enough for your wall, so its fine for your cab.

I don't want to get rid of the spades though.

Are you using male and female spades plugged into eachother? or two of the same wrapped together?

I just unscrewed them from the power supply and kept them separate. The marquee lights will be flowing through these wires though.

Not a safe setup.  :-[ Use marrettes as Richard suggested.  You will have to cut off the spade lugs or get a terminal block where you can attach the spade lugs under a screw.

Ok I would rather get a terminal block because these wires are as short as they can go and I want a quick reconversion process.

Taping together wires with a possible nebulous connection, then taping them to a flammable material ain't a particularly good idea.

Since this looks like a dedicated cab, I am hoping that any required monitor isolation is being done.

OK I got a terminal block and screwed it down, I even stacked another on top so nothing can fall down into it.

Looks good and safe now.   Print out a label and stick it beside the strip saying  Danger 120V

You've already found a solution, but keep the following in mind on future projects. One should have no qualms cutting and capping or modifying a wire if one is dealing with anything over the standard "safe" voltages. Wires are cheap, a couple of dollars at most. Your home, your life, your family etc etc is certainly worth more than a couple of dollars.
