Favorite 4-Way Verticals
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:19:43 pm »
Hey Guys,

I'm putting together a game list for my cocktail project.  What are some of your favorite 4-way vertical games beyond the classics (Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, etc.)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I really like Mr. TNT and my wife likes Anteater. Pengo, Solar Fox, and Qix (the last two require two buttons).
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Ones I've added to my 4-way vertical dedicated:

Armidar
Kicker (this one's a lot of fun)
The Pit
Astro Blaster (kind of an unmentioned classic)

Of course you've always got the obvious ones like the Pac Series and Donkey Kong. And then there Dig-Dug

A couple of 4-way verticals I love to play are:
Lady Bug
Nibbler (Addicting)
Mr Do!

And you also have your 2-way verticals such as:
Galaxian
Galaga
Galaga '88
Lunar Rescue (Great Game)

Another good 4-way vertical that I feel gets overlooked is Eyes.

Guilty Pleasure game of mine... Donkey Kong 3.

I might be the only person that liked it. It's not a 4 way game, but Journey is very playable on a 4 way stick.

And with an 8-way stick, it's still wonky. But a good game.

I have a pretty high score in DK3.

Bank Panic

Works great on a cocktail

bump

Making a (rather large) bartop for a family friend with used parts and wood, and am going to stick to 4-way vertical setup.

List some more 2-way favorites as well!

It gets no love but DK3 is my favorite of those games... a 2 way game. I also like Return of the Invaders from the SI series.

Ms Pacman gets a good workout on my upright, and will get more more on the cocktail.
Kludged together a MAME cab 10 years ago, it got a makeover January 2012

These aren't actually 4 way games but they play well with a 4 way stick.
I think Phoenix actually used 2 buttons for left and right and scramble and super cobra had 8 way sticks but they play great using my 4 way just a little tricky flying through some of the tight passages.

Phoenix
Scramble
Super Cobra

Phoenix was indeed buttons but it plays fine with a 4-way. I have owned both Scramble and Super Cobra (actual boards) and neither play "well" with a 4-way stick. You can control it, but the experience is certainly diminished.
